I’m really excited about Highguard! It just came out a couple of weeks after they showed it off at The Game Awards last December. It’s being called a new kind of shooter, and it looks like it’s going to be a big free-to-play game – Wildlight Entertainment even already shared a plan for all the updates and content they have planned for the next year!
Okay, so get this – within just one hour of launching, our game blew up! We had over half a million people watching on Twitch and YouTube at the same time, and that number is still climbing like crazy. It’s honestly insane!
Maybe It’s a Success After All
I had a feeling Highguard was going to be a big deal, honestly. There was so much hype and mystery around it before it even came out. Geoff Keighley really built it up at The Game Awards, but then it felt like critics were already writing it off because it reminded them of games that hadn’t done so well. It was a weird situation – a lot of anticipation mixed with immediate negativity.
Since its global launch, Highguard is proving incredibly popular. It quickly reached a peak of 480,000 viewers across Twitch and YouTube, becoming the most-watched game on both platforms.
The game quickly became popular on Steam, with nearly 100,000 people playing at the same time just one hour after it launched. This happened even though it was a Monday afternoon and many people were either at work or asleep.
Everyone was surprised by how strong Highguard was at launch, but it shows that Wildlight Entertainment’s pre-release marketing strategy of building anticipation really worked.
