As the clock ticks towards the expiration of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s tenure in May, the usual suspects in the prediction markets have been frothing at the mouth, placing bets with the gravitas of a Mayfair bookmaker on whom President Trump might anoint as his successor.
Initially, the odds favored Kevin Hassett, a man whose economic views align with Trump’s like a well-tailored Savile Row suit. But, as is the wont of this administration, the winds have shifted, and now the bookies are laying their money on BlackRock’s Chief Investment Officer, Rick Rieder, a man whose name sounds more like a minor character in a P.G. Wodehouse novel than a potential Fed Chair.
Davos Whispers and Market Flutterings
Rieder, it seems, is the current darling of the prediction platforms, polling at a robust 45% on both Polymarket and Kalshi, leaving the likes of Fed Governor Christopher Waller and Kevin Warsh trailing in his wake like so many discarded champagne flutes at a society wedding.
One might be forgiven for thinking this a rather pedestrian wager, given Trump’s penchant for telegraphing his choices with all the subtlety of a brass band at a funeral. Yet, in a recent CNBC interview at Davos, the President described Rieder as “very impressive,” a phrase he has been known to apply to everything from steaks to golf courses.
“I’d say we’re down to three, but we’re down to two. And I can probably tell you, we’re down to maybe one, in my mind,” Trump declared, with the air of a man who has just solved the Riemann Hypothesis over breakfast.
The smart money, of course, is on Rieder, though one would be wise to remember that Trump’s mind is a labyrinthine place, where decisions are made and unmade with the capriciousness of a summer breeze.
According to Bloomberg, Rieder’s appeal lies in his outsider status-a man untainted by the musty corridors of the Federal Reserve, and thus free to implement changes with the zeal of a revolutionary. Whether this is a virtue or a folly remains to be seen.
It is worth noting, however, that Trump’s declarations of certainty are about as reliable as a weather forecast in the English countryside.
Hassett’s Fall from Grace: A Tale of Dovish Woes
A mere month ago, Kevin Hassett was the toast of the town, his dovish views on interest rates aligning perfectly with Trump’s economic fantasies. As director of the US National Economic Council, he was the golden boy, the heir apparent to Powell’s throne.
But, in a twist worthy of a Waugh novel, Trump’s favor proved as fleeting as a summer romance. Less than two weeks ago, he announced a change of heart, deciding that Hassett was better suited to his current role. The prediction markets, ever fickle, have since slashed his odds to a paltry 8%.
Regardless of who ultimately dons the mantle of Fed Chair, Trump’s desire for lower interest rates is as clear as a gin and tonic on a summer afternoon. Should he get his way, the crypto markets may well be the first to feel the effects, though whether this will be a boon or a bane remains to be seen.
Crypto’s Dance with the Fed: A Risky Waltz
Lower interest rates, of course, mean greater liquidity, and with it, a heady appetite for risk. Bitcoin and Ethereum, those darlings of the digital age, could well find themselves on an upward trajectory, buoyed by the influx of cheap credit.
Yet, the devil is in the details. The Trump administration’s repeated assaults on the Federal Reserve’s independence have already sent shivers through the bond markets, and the crypto world, ever sensitive to volatility, may find itself in choppy waters should this pressure continue.
In the end, the choice of Fed Chair may be less about economic policy and more about Trump’s insatiable desire to leave his mark, however chaotic, on the institutions of power. As for the crypto markets, they may well be left to dance to whatever tune the new maestro chooses to play, whether it be a waltz or a funeral march.
