Sony is Quietly Suggesting PS4 Players Upgrade to PS5 Consoles

Pictures began circulating online today of a message PlayStation sent to users of PlayStation 4 consoles. The message encouraged them to check out deals on the PlayStation 5 to upgrade, hinting that major new games are coming in 2026 and might be best experienced on the newer system.

Around the middle of 2024, roughly half of PlayStation gamers were still using the PS4, even though the newer PS5 had been available for several years. This means tens of millions of players worldwide continued to enjoy games primarily on the 2013 console.

It’s Time To Give Up the PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 5 has been available for over five years, and the PlayStation 4 came out in 2013. It might be time to consider upgrading now, unless you’re willing to wait for the PlayStation 6 and skip the current generation.

A PlayStation user recently shared a message they received that seemed to subtly push them to upgrade from their PlayStation 4 to a PlayStation 5. The message reportedly said:

From revisiting 2025 favorites like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, ARC Raiders, and Ghost of Yotei, to preparing for the biggest games coming in 2026 – including titles like SAROS, 007 First Light, and Nioh 3 – now is the ideal time to get a PlayStation 5.

Sony might be genuinely trying to improve the gaming experience for its players, or this could be a way to attract people away from platforms that are being discontinued.

Sony announced in October 2025 that some online features for PlayStation 4 games will stop working in 2026. This is part of Sony’s plan to move away from older technology, as they focus on future PlayStation consoles like the upcoming PlayStation 6.
