As a long-time gamer with memories of playing the original Romancing SaGa 2 on my trusty old SNES, I must say that the remake has truly captured the essence of the game while modernizing it for today’s audiences. The transition from 2D to 3D was handled seamlessly, and the timeline-based battle system is a refreshing take on the classic turn-based combat.
I’m really excited about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, which releases on October 24th (on PS4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch). In anticipation, I had the chance to talk to the game’s developers, learning more about the project.
In our conversation with Shinichi Tatsuke, the game’s Producer, we discussed the team’s sense of pressure, the hurdles they face when transitioning a 2D game to 3D, and also touched upon the hints of the inheritance system that were shown in the demo.
The SaGa series has been with us for 35 years now. What does the series mean to you?
For me, it’s an honor to be part of creating a SaGa game for the very first time. Working on such a distinguished title fills me with pride.
Have you ever wondered if there’s any pressure involved when remaking Romancing SaGa 2, a beloved game from the SaGa series, given its dedicated fanbase?
Shinichi Tatsuke: I wasn’t under any stress; instead, I was thrilled about the opportunity to redo it.
How have you encountered difficulties while transforming a 2D timeless favorite into a 3D version for the first time, given that role-playing games (RPGs) have undergone significant transformations over the past 31 years since Romancing SaGa 2 was released?
Transforming something from 2D to 3D often leads to areas that seem off, so adjustments are necessary. For instance, conversations in a 2D game might feature adorable pixel-styled characters communicating via speech bubbles. Yet, this approach can feel less engaging when implemented in 3D due to dialogue feeling flat and animations appearing overly simple. In 2D games, our minds tend to fill in the blanks, so when we transition to 3D, it’s crucial to compensate by enhancing the script, visuals, and possibly new scenes. For this remake, we have included additional dialogue, animations, and even entire sequences to reimagine key story moments from the original in a way that I believe will resonate with players as an authentic continuation of their memories.
What have you done to ensure Revenge of the Seven feels fresh in the modern era?
In the updated version of the game, combat shifts from a sequence of turns to a timeline system, much like that in Octopath Traveler. Additionally, attacking enemies when they’re weak will fill up the Overdrive Gauge. When this gauge is completely charged, your party can perform a combined powerful attack.
The growth system introduces a unique “talent” system. Each character class possesses distinct talents that become accessible upon achieving a specific number of battle wins. Remarkably, once that milestone is reached, these talents can also be acquired by other characters.
In its initial version, the game was renowned for offering a non-linear playthrough. However, during the first two hours, we didn’t get a sense of this linearity. Is this characteristic still present in the ‘Revenge of the Seven’ edition?
In the initial two hours of the game, the events are structured sequentially to familiarize the player with the game’s background and teach them how the game works mechanically and in terms of its combat system. This approach remains consistent whether it’s the original version or the remake.
Is there anything unique or improved about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, that long-time players would find appealing?
Additional material is provided, offering insights into the Seven Heroes during their prime years. This additional information explains why they were revered as heroes and what motivates them to seek retribution now.
Could you elaborate on the demonstration’s limited glimpse into the inheritance system, and provide some insights into its functioning within the complete game?
Through the Imperial Succession system, the capabilities and knowledge of each emperor are carried forward to their successors. Initially in the demo, the position of emperor is assigned to a particular character; however, from then on, players get to decide who ascends to the throne. The imperial role is transferred when the current emperor passes away, after a significant period of time, or if the current emperor willingly abdicates. Over time, as this process continues, the subsequent emperors grow in strength. This cycle persists for millennia until the Seven Heroes are eventually vanquished.
The classic game “Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven” will be available for play on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 24th.
