Devil Fruit Users Defeated Without A Devil Fruit In One Piece

As a seasoned pirate and scholar of the high seas, I must say that each of these characters has left quite an impression on me, their tales as intriguing as the vast oceans they sail. Queen, with his Brachiosaurus form and snake-like abilities, is a testament to the unpredictable nature of Devil Fruits in One Piece. His encounter with Sanji was a classic example of the power that lies dormant within us, waiting to be awakened by adversity.

In One Piece, Devil Fruits are typically seen as tools that make the powerful even more formidable. By acquiring a Devil Fruit, an individual gains combat abilities that amplify their existing skills. However, it’s important to note that being in possession of a Devil Fruit does not guarantee victory. Many times, characters who are quick-witted have been able to outsmart their opponents, even when conventional fighting would seem to favor the latter. Moreover, there are methods like haki and seastone specifically designed to combat tricky Devil Fruits. On several occasions, users of these powerful fruits have been defeated by those who haven’t consumed one.

5 Gem and Mikita aka Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine

Defeated by: Nami, Nefertari Vivi, (Mikita) and Roronoa Zoro (Gem)

Devil Fruit Users Defeated Without A Devil Fruit In One Piece

  • Debut: Chapter 110 (Manga), Episode 65 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Bomu Bomu no Mi (Gem) and Kiro Kiro no Mi (Mikita)
  • Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia

Although these two are not the first characters to coast off their Devil Fruits or the last Baroque Works Officer Agents to be beaten by a Non-Devil Fruit user, Gem (Mr. 5) and Mikita (Miss Valentine) both exemplify how a relatively strong Devil Fruit can bolster a weaker fighter. Mr. 5’s physical combat is greatly exaggerated by his ability to set off explosions on contact. He can also launch projectile explosives by blasting out his snot, which can also explode. He credits his explosive Bomu Bomu no Mi to his great success with missions. His partner, Miss Valentine, is not shown directly fighting, instead using her Kilo Kilo no Mi powers to physically crush any competition by shifting her weight between 1 and 10,000 kilograms. She often uses this technique slowly to torture her foes or rapidly to bury them alive.

Though they appear to bully Princess Nefertari Vivi and her companions, Galdino (also known as Mr. 3) sees them as weak, even though he himself isn’t a powerful fighter. After successfully subduing Nami, Vivi, and Zoro, it seems that hope is nearly gone for the trio in Mr. 3’s candle-lit setting. However, Usopp swiftly comes up with a plan: he gives Karoo a rope soaked in oil to wrap around the candle set, before being restrained by Miss Valentine. Subsequently, Luffy is guided to ignite an explosion using Mr. 3’s lit head, allowing the Straw Hat pirates to quickly flee from confinement.

In response to their persistent interference, Miss Valentine aggressively tries to break Usopp’s neck by swiftly adjusting her balance in mid-air. However, a swift counterattack from Nami and Vivi interrupts her assault, even though neither possesses a Devil Fruit. This leads Mr. 5 to become enraged and attack, but he is ultimately subdued by Zoro. These quick successions suggest that the power of a Devil Fruit isn’t everything, especially when facing opponents who are physically stronger.

4 Kalifa

Defeated by: Nami

  • Debut: Chapter 323 (Manga), Episode 230 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Awa Awa no Mi
  • Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia

Kalifa belonged to Cipher Pol Unit 9 (CP9), a group supervised by the World Government, primarily known for conducting targeted assassinations. Compared to her comrades, Kalifa’s power level, or “doriki,” is relatively low; however, she possesses an impressive physical strength that sets her apart from most common individuals. Her Devil Fruit, Awa Awa no Mi, enables her to manufacture soap that can strip opponents of their physical might, reinforcing her command. In a strategic move, she employed this ability against Sanji after captivating him, rendering him unconscious and covering him with soap.

Later on, Nami approached Kalifa for a confrontation, only to step right into a trap. Just like Kalifa, she fell victim to a soap trap, leaving her weakened. Despite managing to subdue and nearly choke her during their initial skirmish, Kalifa found it challenging to handle Nami’s enhanced Clima Tact in the long run. Not only did Nami employ her Mirage Tempo to deceive Kalifa into attacking decoy versions of herself, but she also used a Thunder Lance Tempo to take down Kalifa.

3 Who’s-Who

Defeated by: Jimbei

  • Debut: Chapter 977 (Manga), Episode 954 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Saber Tiger
  • Devil Fruit Type: Ancient Zoan

Originally part of the CP9 team and responsible for safeguarding the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Who’s-Who found himself betrayed when the fruit was stolen by the Red Hair Pirates, leading to Luffy consuming it. Consequently, he was dismissed from his role and imprisoned due to this error. This incident fostered a deep-seated resentment towards the Red Hair Pirates and eventually Luffy, once the truth about the eaten Devil Fruit came to light. In confinement, Who’s-Who became aware of the Sun God, Nika, and fervently sought redemption during his imprisonment. Interestingly, the salvation he yearned for was somewhat inherent in the Gomu Gomu no Mi itself, as it enabled its user to transform into Nika once awakened.

Eventually, Who’s-Who successfully broke free from captivity and chose a life of piracy, even commanding his own crew at one point. However, this crew later merged with the Beasts Pirates, like many others in his past and present roles. Similar to others in his current and previous positions, Who’s-Who possesses a Zoan Devil Fruit – specifically, the Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Saber Tiger. As the name suggests, this Devil Fruit grants him the ability to transform fully or partially into a saber-toothed tiger. In the ranks of the Beasts Pirates, Who’s-who is one of the Flying Six – their strongest officers, with the exception of the All-Stars.

In the intense battle between Who’s-Who and the new Straw Hat Pirate, Jimbei (formerly known as the Warlord), it was clear that Who’s-Who had earned his title through rigorous training to become an agent. However, Jimbei, with an even more impressive background, emerged victorious. While Who’s-Who’s Rokushiki techniques held their own against Jimbei’s Fish-Man karate, the former still managed to secure the win. The exact reasons for Jimbei’s victory are unclear, but it’s likely a combination of exceptional skill and physical strength, given his Fish-Man physique and years of honing his abilities.

2 Queen

Defeated by: Sanji

  • Debut: Chapter 920 (Manga), Episode 910 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus
  • Devil Fruit Type: Ancient Zoan

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: Among the elite trio of the Beasts Pirates, I was the tech-savvy one, infamously carrying out clandestine experiments for MADS, an organization that counted Dr. Vegapunk, Vinsmoke Judge, and Caesar Clown among its members. Being a cyborg, I’ve got a high-tech arm and have mastered the combat techniques of the Vinsmoke siblings. Topping it off, I possess a unique Devil Fruit – the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus.

Although transforming into a colossal dinosaur certainly benefits any combatant, Queen’s unique cybernetic structure complements this by providing additional abilities likely not possessed by the average Brachiosaurus. Moreover, the fictional setting of “One Piece” enhances the creature’s usefulness, implying it could detach its head and neck from its body, resembling a snake. This characteristic is mirrored in Queen’s own attacks.

In a notable jab at Sanji, Queen mockingly referred to Sanji’s past as a child from the Judge clan, attempting to provoke him into action, as Queen himself was well-versed in the ways of Germa 66. Despite his mother intentionally restraining his genetic enhancements, which led to his distance from the Vinsmoke family, they activated during his battle with Queen, providing an advantage against the formidable scientist. Eventually, Sanji used his Ifrit Jambe abilities, a more powerful version of his Diable Jambe techniques, to ultimately defeat Queen.

1 Eustass Kid

Defeated by: Shanks

  • Debut: Chapter 498 (Manga), Episode 392 (Anime)
  • Devil Fruit: Jiki Jiki no Mi
  • Devil Fruit Type: Paramecia, Awakened

Eustass Kid is an influential pirate, boasting one of the highest bounties among the Worst Generation – a group of pirates deemed exceptionally dangerous by the government. Alongside characters such as Luffy, Zoro, and Law, all members of this notorious generation, Kid has formed alliances due to a common enemy they are determined to thwart. The alliance between Kid and Law ultimately led to the downfall of Big Mom.

The child’s Jiki Jiki no Mi grants him the power to generate magnetic fields, a skill he uses to transform scrap metal into an assortment of weapons ranging from simple to intricate. Usually, he shapes these weapons into massive metal limbs, but they can also be fashioned into operational cannons or lasers. In addition, he can utilize this ability to disarm opponents whose weapons are magnetized. Furthermore, the fruit’s Awakening heightened its capabilities, enabling him to manipulate the polarity of non-metallic organisms, making them magnetic as well.

The group known as the Kid Pirates, led by Kid himself, are infamous for their merciless actions, causing harm to civilians and widespread devastation wherever they go. This brutal behavior contributed significantly to the high bounties placed on them, even earning Killer, one of Kid’s crewmates, a place among the Worst Generation, making him the only non-captain aside from Zoro to achieve this status. However, their reckless approach might have been their downfall. When they clashed with Shanks and his pirate alliance in Elbaf, Kid planned a deadly attack that could have resulted in heavy casualties if successful. Shanks used the Kamusari technique to knock out both Kid and Killer, with Killer attempting to shield Shanks from the attack. The aftermath was catastrophic, as the leaders of the Giant Warrior Pirates retaliated by destroying the Kid Pirates’ ship as a punishment for trying to loot their home.

It is worth noting that, while they don’t seem to possess any Devil Fruits, the Red Hair Pirates have previously managed to overcome crews endowed with Devil Fruit abilities. For instance, Yasopp recently neutralized the Barto Club, a part of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, by delivering a precise shot. However, this encounter was more about the Barto Club attempting to flee rather than a full-blown battle.
