In the game “Until Dawn,” collectibles known as Totems serve as warnings for potential consequences when certain decisions are made. With over 30 possible character deaths, these warnings can be very useful in guiding your next move. Originally, there were five distinct types of Totems to discover; however, the Remake introduced a new type – Hunger – which provides a unique type of foresight.
Every time a character grabs a Totem, they’ll encounter a vision that hints at a character’s potential demise or a decision they should make based on the type of Totem discovered. The color of the Totem signifies the nature of the vision – varying from a possible way a character might die to the choice they should make when faced with it. There are 36 in total, and while some can be easily found, others will require exploration of hidden paths within Until Dawn.
Prologue Totems
In the Prologue, there is only one Totem to discover, specifically the initial Black Totem. During your gameplay as Beth, seek a door on your left that can be opened when you gain control over her for the first time. Follow the path until you reach the outdoors, then go down the stairs. Continue along the snowy trail until it leads to a small, damaged fence. The Totem will be found at the end of this path, lying just in front of the fence.
Chapter 1 Totems
Similarly to the Prologue, there’s only one Totem in Chapter 1, specifically the initial Guidance (Yellow) Totem. As you play as Sam, upon reaching the cable car station, take a left turn and move towards the small parking area nearby. You’ll find the Totem leaning against the fence that borders the forest.
Chapter 2 Totems
Chapter 2 has a total of 6 Totems to find.
Loss Totem 1 Location
As character Chris, you can discover the Totem upon entering the lodge. Initially, you’ll find yourself in the garage with two exits in front of you. Before leaving through either door, navigate to the far right corner of the garage and scrutinize behind the large storage shelves. The Totem is subtly concealed in this spot.
Guidance Totem 2 Location
When you’re in the lodge, playing as Chris, locate the Totem by going upstairs. You’ll come across a small platform with railing, and the bathroom will be immediately in front of you. Prior to entering the bathroom, veer left and search for the Totem on the floor, nestled between the furniture in that section.
Danger Totem 1 Location
After Mike and Jess are ousted from the lodge, hold off on going down the stairs. Instead, circumnavigate the stairs by following the balcony as far as possible. You’ll find the Totem situated in front of some chairs and a table.
Fortune Totem 1 Location
Following Mike and Jess as they venture into the mines, you’ll encounter a critical moment where you need to swiftly navigate a time-sensitive event to prevent a mine cart from colliding with them both. After this thrilling scene, continue along the railway tracks for a straight shot, and at the end of the pathway, you’ll discover the Totem.
Loss Totem 2 Location
Once Jess and Mike resume their journey on the snow-covered trail, a sudden flutter of wings might startle Mike, causing him to react. Afterward, take a moment to retrace your steps a bit and glance to your left where you’ll spot a Totem nestled among the trees.
Death Totem 2 Location
While playing as Matt, you’ll stumble upon a hidden Totem during your search for Emily’s lost bag. As you progress along the path, take note that there’s an open area with a picnic table smack in the middle. Swivel around and have a peek behind this table. You’ll spot the elusive Totem nestled between some bushes.
Chapter 3 Totems
Chapter 3 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Hunger Totem 1 Location
Once you discover the Totem, you’ll have control over Mike. Following Jessica’s disappearance and Mike’s search for her, you’ll come across a dilapidated truck on the trail. To locate your initial Hunger Totem, head to the small space situated to the left of this truck.
Guidance Totem 3 Location
After Mike meets up with Jess, you’ll reach a crossroads. Opt for the route on the left, and by retracing your steps a bit along that path, you’ll discover the Totem located there.
Guidance Totem 4 Location
After assuming command over Ashley, post-the séance, look for the Totem. Follow Chris as he descends the staircase. Upon reaching the bottom, promptly take a right turn. You’ll discover the Totem on the floor in this compact room, positioned in front of the stairs.

Chapter 4 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Fortune Totem 2 Location
As Mike pursues Jess following her abduction, you’ll eventually reach a large barn after navigating (or not managing to navigate) a sequence of rapid-response events. To your right, there are some steps leading down that you should take. To locate the Totem, descend these stairs and search for a compact room on your right side instead.
Hunger Totem 2 Location
As Mike pursues the mysterious figure, keep an eye out for a substantial overpass-like construction with ramps ascending it. After scaling the initial short set of steps, swiftly veer left to discover a hidden passageway that ultimately directs you to the following Hunger Totem.
Death Totem 3 Location
As character Chris, you’ll search for Ashley who has been abducted by the Psychopath. Along the way, you’ll stumble upon a Totem positioned outside. Follow the snow-covered path until you reach a larger open space on your right side, then ascend the small hill to retrieve the Totem at its peak.
Chapter 5 Totems
Chapter 5 has a total of 4 Totems to find.
Danger Totem 2 Location
Upon arriving at the Sanatorium for the first time, make your way towards the outdoor fountain and circle it counterclockwise. You’ll find the Totem situated near a narrow pathway beside a substantial fence.
Guidance Totem 5 Location
As I follow Mike down the stairway towards the morgue, he grabs a machete from an operating table. Instead of going straight, we take a left turn together. Keeping left, we continue on this path, and lo and behold, the Totem is nestled next to some privacy dividers.
Danger Totem 3 Location
As soon as you take control of Matt, follow Emily as she descends a modest slope. Once you’ve arrived at the expansive space before the cable car station, veer to your right and stick to the tiny fence until you find an opening in it. The Totem is hidden behind this fence.
Guidance Totem 6 Location
Once you’ve danced your way around the tower as Matt, climb the little stairway, take a right turn, and venture into the tiny storage structure. You’ll find the Totem there.
Chapter 6 Totems
Chapter 6 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Danger Totem 4 Location
As soon as you and Emily arrive at the ranger tower, prior to ascending the staircase, search for a snow-covered trail veering off to your right. Continue along this trail and make a right turn to locate the Totem in a secluded area close to a precipice.
Loss Totem 3 Location
Once you’ve ascended the tower, you should proceed by walking on the ledge that juts out from the building’s exterior to activate the power. Follow the entire pathway to locate the Totem hidden in one of its corners.
Hunger Totem 3 Location
As soon as you discover the Totem, your character will be Ashley. Upon approaching the antique hotel hidden beneath the lodge, you’ll stumble upon a door offering two directions. At this juncture, opt for the right path and traverse the corridor until you reach its end to uncover the Totem.
Chapter 7 Totems
Chapter 7 has a total of 2 Totems to find.
Loss Totem 4 Location
As I embark on my adventure with Emily, I come across a challenging obstacle: a massive door blocking my way forward in the mines. To overcome this hurdle, I need to set loose a minecart nearby that will smash through the door. Once I’ve done that, I should follow the path upward from the cart, until I reach an impasse where I can no longer proceed any further. It is there that I’ll find the elusive Totem!
Death Totem 4 Location
Following your fall through the floor while playing as Emily in the mine, proceed ahead until you encounter an old railway that’s been laid over wooden planks. At this intersection, head to the route on the left and follow it all the way to its end to locate the Totem.
Chapter 8 Totems
Chapter 8 also has a total of 2 Totems to find.
Fortune Totem 3 Location
Following the Stranger shoving Emily deeper into the mine and her clutching a flare, you’ll next have to navigate over a small precipice to proceed. Jump off the ledge initially, but veer right and follow the trail to locate the hidden Totem.
Danger Totem 5 Location
During Emily’s adventure in the mine, right before you squeeze through the narrow gap in the wall and continue chasing her, you’ll spot the Totem resting on the ground, slightly off to the left side of the room. It’s hard to overlook if you stick to the path.
Chapter 9 Totems
There are a total of 7 Totems to find in Chapter 9.
Loss Totem 5 Location
With Mike by your side, proceed to the Sanatorium Chapel. After entering, veer to the right-hand side of the room. Keep moving in that direction, and you’ll discover a modest room tucked away at the rear of the chapel. The Totem can be found within this hidden space.
Hunger Totem 4 Location
Following your acquisition of the last Totem, retrace your steps to the Chapel and proceed through the gate on your right as your first destination. Outside this gate lies a hint for the Makeshift Graveyard, but instead of stopping there, walk around the graveyard and continue along the path until it ends. The next Totem will be among more graves in that location.
Death Totem 5 Location
As you ascend the stairway accompanied by Mike, proceed along the winding route through the chambers and maneuver around the clutter ahead. Upon exiting the second chamber, make your way through the door to your left. You’ll find the Totem concealed behind privacy screens in this very room.
Loss Totem 6 Location
In the role of Ashley, when the team is seeking an alternative route to the Sanatorium, you’ll eventually come across a spot where Sam is having trouble opening the big metal doors. Instead of assisting her immediately, turn your back and proceed down the corridor to the rear of the room. There, you’ll find the Totem resting.
Fortune Totem 4 Location
When Ashley seeks out the others and comes across an odd sound, decides to explore it. Continue along the path until you arrive at a door leading into a fresh hallway, then take a left. At the conclusion of this path lies the Totem.
Death Totem 6 Location
When you’ve scaled the rocky wall in the mine as Sam, take an immediate left to find the Totem.
Hunger Totem 5 Location
As a gamer, I’d say: “Keep on truckin’ down the mine with ol’ Sam here. We’ll eventually run into some shallow water ahead. This water splits into two directions as we go along, so when you see that fork, veer left to uncover the Totem waiting for us at its end.
Chapter 10 Totems
Chapter 10 holds the last 4 Totems you can find.
Danger Totem 6 Location
Instead of entering through a door to reach Josh, swim out of the water with Sam, then veer left and ascend the hill (following the railway). The Totem is situated at the end of this path. Alternatively, you can find the Totem with Josh when following Mike; in that case, proceed straight instead of diving into the water with him.
Fortune Totem 5 Location
Once Sam and Mike locate Josh, there will be a chance for you to control Josh. As soon as you assume command, promptly spin around and make your way through the dilapidated, small structure ahead. Then, turn left to discover the hidden Totem in one of its corners.
