They’ve thrown the main character, an octopus, right into a Metal Gear Solidstyle infiltration mission – they’re calling it a tribute to Snake, but from an octopus’s perspective. It’s a great way to get a feel for the gameplay. What’s really neat is how the game uses the fact that you are* an octopus. You can move seamlessly between underwater and land, swim, climb on ceilings, and even camouflage yourself to sneak past enemies. Plus, you can shoot ink for attacks and to mess with the environment, and your tentacles are super useful for everything from making tricky jumps to pulling levers and just generally getting around in creative ways. Along with the unexpected gameplay reveal, the creators of Darwin’s Paradox announced that players who pre-order the game will get two special in-game skins: Psyched and Dotted. To claim these skins, you must first pre-purchase the full game. After pre-ordering, you’ll be able to choose which skin pack you want. Once Darwin’s Paradox is released, you can find the skins in the game’s Main Menu under Extras, then Skins, and equip your chosen skin. While it’s unknown if more exclusive skins will be added after launch, the presence of a Skins section in the menu suggests that additional visual customizations might be unlockable during gameplay or offered as downloadable content in the future.
Konami has made many side-scrolling games, but Darwin’s Paradox is quite different from classics like Castlevania and Contra.
