PlayStation is closing Bluepoint Games in March 2026. Bluepoint Games is known for creating popular remakes of classic video games, including Shadow of the Colossus (2018) and Demon’s Souls (2020). The studio started as an independent company in 2006 and was later bought by Sony in 2021. Unfortunately, it won’t reach its 5-year anniversary as a PlayStation studio.
Having been established in 2006, the studio has contributed to many more games than just a couple. They’ve supported popular titles like God of War Ragnarok, Titanfall, Flower, and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. They were also involved in the creation or remastering of games including Blast Factor, God of War Collection, The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and Gravity Rush Remastered.
Bluepoint Games Was Working on the Live-Service God of War Game Before It was Canceled
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, around 70 employees will lose their jobs due to this closure. A PlayStation representative said the decision came after a recent evaluation of the business. It’s currently unclear if PlayStation will offer any support to those affected. Here’s what PlayStation officially stated about the situation:
I’ve always been blown away by Bluepoint Games. They’re seriously skilled developers, and they consistently deliver amazing games for PlayStation fans like me. I really appreciate their dedication, the cool ideas they come up with, and how polished their games always are.
Following the successful launch of Demon’s Souls on the PlayStation 5, Bluepoint Games helped Santa Monica Studio with God of War Ragnarok. Afterward, Bluepoint began working on a new God of War game intended as an ongoing live-service title, as Sony was exploring more games of that type. Similar live-service projects featuring Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us were also planned, but all three have since been canceled. The new God of War game was the latest to be dropped, with the decision made in January 2025.
According to Bloomberg, PlayStation was exploring a new game with Bluepoint Games, but those plans haven’t moved forward.
Bluepoint Games’ Loss is No One’s Gain
Bluepoint Games has built a strong reputation with gamers for its excellent remakes and support work. Many felt it was a poor fit to assign them to a live-service game, and the studio’s recent closure likely isn’t their fault. Bluepoint was uniquely skilled at remakes – fans widely trusted them to remaster or remake a game like Bloodborne, considered by many to be a masterpiece. Given their successful history with titles like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, and the vocal support from fans, it’s surprising to see them shut down. This raises concerns that even successful studios aren’t secure.
This game appears to be a consequence of Sony’s focus on ongoing, online ‘live service’ games. Back in 2022, the previous CEO announced plans for twelve such games by 2025, a strategy that seemed flawed from the start. This shutdown is a direct result of that approach. While live-service games can be profitable, there’s a point where pushing too many can backfire, and unfortunately, this decision contributed to several games being cancelled.
Canceled Games That Were Part of Sony’s Live Service Push
- Concord made it to release but was shut down two weeks after launch
- The God of War live-service game was canceled.
- The Last of Us Online was canceled.
- Spider-Man: The Great Web was canceled
- Bend Studios’ live-service game was never confirmed, but it has been canceled too.
- Deviation Games was believed to be working on a live-service game for PlayStation before it was shuttered.
The news of Bluepoint Games’ closure is surprising. They were a highly regarded studio known for creating and releasing excellent games.
