The Unluckiest Resident Evil Characters

It’s safe to say some Resident Evil characters are incredibly unlucky. Leon, Claire, and Jill constantly find themselves thrown into chaotic and dangerous situations, battling zombies, bio-weapons, and the ever-present Albert Wesker. Surprisingly, despite all this, they often fare better than many others in the series – sometimes, they’re even the cause of the trouble.

The new game, Resident Evil Requiem, is almost here, and it features a new main character named Grace Ashcroft. Based on what we’ve learned, this FBI analyst seems to be facing a difficult journey, and it’s unclear if she’s simply caught in a string of bad luck. While we wait, let’s take a look back at the Resident Evil series and remember the heroes and villains who have had particularly rough lives.

7. Ramon Salazar

None Of Salazar’s Traps Or Schemes Succeed In Slowing Down Leon

  • Game Appearances: Resident Evil 4 / Resident Evil 4 Remake

Okay, so when I first got to Salazar’s castle in Resident Evil 4, that guy was seriously full of himself! He acted like there was no way I, as Leon, would survive. But honestly, the castle was a total death trap – statues that moved, ceilings falling down, even a room filled with lava! Despite all that, I managed to take everything down myself, one crazy trap after another. It was intense!

Throughout the original game, Salazar’s radio conversations show he’s becoming increasingly frustrated by his constant bad luck, as Leon consistently outmaneuvers him. Even when Salazar fully transforms, he’s no match for Leon’s quick wit and skills, making you wonder how he’d fare against a different opponent.

6. Chris Redfield

It’s Hard To Recall The Number Of Squadmates Chris Has Lost Along His Many Adventures

  • Game Appearances: Resident Evil / Resident Evil: Code Veronica / Resident Evil 5 / Resident Evil 6 / Resident Evil 7 / Resident Evil: Village

Chris Redfield seems to always face tragedy. Fans have noticed a pattern: whenever he builds a team and tries to move forward, something bad happens and he ends up losing them. This is especially clear in Resident Evil 6, where his teammates are gradually lost, leading Chris to become frustrated and wonder why he keeps experiencing this misfortune.

When fans see Chris again in Village, he’s a much more serious and troubled version of his former self. He’s still determined to do the right thing, even though he knows people around him often end up in danger. He couldn’t even save Ethan by the end of that game, and it’s strange how often Chris seems to have such bad luck, despite his best efforts.

5. Steve Burnside

The Sins Of Steve’s Father Ultimately Ruins The Young Man’s Life

  • Game Appearance: Resident Evil: Code Veronica

Many dedicated fans of the Resident Evil series don’t have a lot of good to say about Steve, who helps Claire throughout much of Code Veronica. But despite his unpopularity, it’s hard not to feel a little sorry for him. He constantly faces problems and just can’t seem to catch a break.

Steve’s life takes a dark turn when his father is caught selling secrets from the Umbrella Corporation, leading to Steve’s imprisonment in Rockfort. Things get even worse when he’s forced to kill his zombified father and is constantly teased by Claire, a woman he’s attracted to. Sadly, Steve never gets the chance to pursue a relationship with Claire; he tragically transforms and dies later in the story, all as a consequence of his father’s actions.

4. Ricardo Irving

Transforming Into A B.O.W Is Always A Gamble, But Irving May Have Gotten The Worst Draw of Them All

  • Game Appearance: Resident Evil 5

Ricardo Irving is a weapons dealer who shows up briefly in Resident Evil 5. Throughout the game, he’s constantly ridiculed by an unknown person who is later identified as Jill. However, things really go badly for Irving when he begins to transform.

Turning into a giant water creature is usually a tough spot for a character, and Irving in Resident Evil 4 really shows that. He unfortunately transforms into a form with vulnerable, exposed sacs and then swims right near a cruise ship covered in Gatling guns, making him an easy target. If things had gone a little differently, he might have stood a chance, but it wasn’t meant to be.

3. Sherry Birkin

Ever Since The Raccoon City Incident, Sherry Has Been Plagued With Bad Luck

  • Game Appearances: Resident Evil 2 / Resident Evil 2 Remake / Resident Evil 6

Sherry had a very difficult childhood, marked by traumatic events. When Raccoon City was overrun by zombies, her parents left her to survive on her own until Claire Redfield found her. Even after escaping that ordeal, Sherry’s life remained challenging as an adult, as she was pursued because of her unique genetic makeup.

Man, playing as Sherry is rough. It feels like everyone’s always after her, and honestly, she’s had terrible luck her whole life. Just when you think things are looking up – like when she finally becomes a federal agent – BAM! Turns out the guy who raised her, Simmons, is a total villain. Seriously, the game just keeps piling on the bad news!

2. Bitores Mendez

Mendez’s Dreams Were Crushed Due To One Unlucky Encounter

  • Game Appearances: Resident Evil 4 / Resident Evil 4 Remake

Mendez initially appears to be a typical villain, a harsh boss for Leon to defeat. But hidden throughout Resident Evil 4 Remake are documents that tell a sad story about what happened to him, showing how quickly his life fell apart.

When Mendez became village leader, things were looking up. People were happy, with singing and dancing filling the streets, and children were beginning to receive an education. However, this positive change didn’t last. A secretive group of hooded figures arrived and, before long, everyone – including Mendez himself – was transformed into a mindless, controlled being. Just as Mendez’s hopes were rising, a single, unfortunate event ruined everything.

1. Ethan Winters

It’s Almost Like Capcom Just Enjoys Playing Cruel And Twisted Jokes On Ethan

  • Game Appearances: Resident Evil 7 / Resident Evil: Village

Ethan is easily one of the unluckiest characters in horror game history. He’s an ordinary guy suddenly thrown into a terrifying ordeal at the Baker Mansion, where he’s attacked and experimented on. Just when he and his wife, Mia, finally escape, they’re struck with another blow: Mia is revealed to be a clone created by the villain, Mother Miranda, and taken from him once again.

Ethan, already struggling with misfortune, enters a terrifying village overrun by werewolves to find his daughter, Rose. Just as he’s about to reach her, he discovers a shocking truth: he’s actually been dead. A strange mold had been animating his body, and every time he neared peace and a reunion with his family, the mold cruelly snatched it away, leaving him trapped and powerless.
