Pokemon TCG Fan Has a Wild Idea for the Franchise’s 30th Anniversary

A Pokemon Trading Card Game enthusiast suggested a great way to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary: reprinting the extremely rare “Moonbreon” card with a special anniversary mark. Throughout its history, the Pokemon TCG – based on the popular monster-catching franchise – has seen many cards become very valuable. The Base Set Charizard is famously one of the most sought-after cards, selling for huge sums of money, and even newer, beautifully illustrated cards can be quite expensive. However, the “Moonbreon” card is particularly treasured by fans.

The Umbreon VMAX card, nicknamed “Moonbreon,” first appeared in the 2021 Pokemon Trading Card Game expansion, Evolving Skies. As a special, beautifully illustrated version of the popular Pokemon Eevee, it was incredibly hard to find in packs, which quickly drove up its price. Currently, a Moonbreon typically sells for around $1,700 on TCGPlayer, and cards graded a perfect 10 by PSA can easily exceed $3,000. However, one Pokemon fan has proposed a creative solution to make this rare card more obtainable.

Pokemon TCG Fan Wants Anniversary Moonbreon Reprint

A Reddit user named good-smoke posted an interesting idea on the Pokemon TCG subreddit: a slightly updated version of the Moonbreon card. They shared an image of the Umbreon VMAX card with a 30th anniversary stamp added to the side. The user believes including this card in a special 30th anniversary set with older reprints would make it more accessible to fans and potentially lower the price of the original, highly sought-after version. The Pokemon Company has successfully reprinted valuable cards before, so this seems like a plausible idea.

The suggestion to add an anniversary stamp to the Moonbreon card is similar to what Pokemon TCG did for its last big anniversary release. The Pokemon Celebrations set, which came out in 2021, marked the franchise’s 25th anniversary with new cards showcasing popular characters and creatures. It also included a “Classic Collection” with reprints of older cards, each featuring a special 25th anniversary stamp. This collection included some of the most valuable cards from the game’s history, such as the Base Set Charizard, Shining Magikarp from Neo Revelation, and the Gold Star Umbreon.

In addition to the Celebrations expansion, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has consistently looked back at its history. The 2016 XY Evolutions expansion was a major tribute to Pokémon’s beginnings, bringing back many cards from the very first Pokémon Base Set as the last release for the Pokémon X and Y series. These reprinted cards featured updated designs to set them apart from the original versions, while generally keeping the same stats and attack details. As of yet, The Pokémon Company hasn’t announced a specific expansion to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary.

As a Pokémon TCG fan, I’m already so hyped for everything coming in 2026! We just got the Ascended Heroes set, which is huge – seriously, the biggest expansion ever! It’s packed with awesome cards I’m trying to collect, like Mega Dragonite ex and a really cool new look for Mega Gengar ex. And it doesn’t stop there! Pokémon announced another big set, Perfect Order, coming out on March 27th, and it’s bringing Mega Zygarde to the game for the first time! Of course, everyone’s really looking forward to the 30th anniversary celebrations, and I’m expecting some amazing surprises!
