I was really shocked to hear yesterday that Sony decided to close down Bluepoint Games! They’ve become so well-known for doing amazing remasters and remakes – seriously, they’ve been a go-to for Sony for years. It’s a big surprise, and honestly, I’m with David Jaffe, the creator of God of War, in hoping Xbox will swoop in and save them. They’re just too talented to lose!
Bluepoint Games is best known for its stunning remakes of Shadow of the Colossus (2018) and Demon’s Souls (2020), both of which received widespread critical and player acclaim. The studio also created several popular HD collections, including God of War Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and Gravity Rush Remastered. The recent news of Sony closing Bluepoint Games came as a surprise, and game developer David Jaffe has expressed hope that Xbox will acquire the studio.
God of War Creator David Jaffe Wants Xbox to Buy Bluepoint Games
Shortly after the news broke, game developer David Jaffe tweeted at Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, urging him to prevent Bluepoint Games from closing. Jaffe argued that acquiring Bluepoint would be a simple solution to keep the talented team together. While Spencer has the power to make this happen, it seems improbable given the recent challenges Microsoft Gaming has faced.

Microsoft Has Also Been Canceling Games and Shutting Down Studios
Man, it’s been rough seeing all the game cancellations lately from Microsoft. It wasn’t just projects getting scrapped, either – they actually closed down entire studios, which is really worrying. This year, we lost Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, and Alpha Dog Games. Thankfully, Krafton picked up Tango, but the other two weren’t so lucky. Last year, I was bummed to hear they canceled Everwild and the Perfect Dark remake – I was really looking forward to that one! The worst part is, the cancellation of Perfect Dark even led to The Initiative, the studio making it, getting shut down. I even saw David Jaffe tweet that Bluepoint Games could maybe do something amazing with Perfect Dark if they picked it up next.
Microsoft has faced criticism for recent layoffs, and many people have pointed to this pattern when discussing a potential acquisition of Bluepoint Games. While it doesn’t rule out a purchase, Microsoft’s history of cuts makes it less probable. The introduction of Muse, Microsoft’s AI tool for creating game visuals, has also raised concerns that the company is shifting towards AI-assisted game development. If this is true, acquiring Bluepoint Games – known for its traditional game remakes – seems even less likely.
The future of Bluepoint Games is currently uncertain following Sony’s recent decision to shut down the studio. While a sale to another company is possible, it would be unexpected. Regardless of what happens, Bluepoint Games has left a lasting positive impact on the video game industry. They were masters of remakes and remasters, famously revitalizing classics like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls – both considered among the best remakes ever made. The situation is still developing, and while many would welcome Bluepoint joining Xbox, that seems unlikely given Microsoft’s current strategy.
