Square Enix, a Japanese publisher, recently released a short teaser for the sequel to their popular game, Nier: Automata. Originally released in 2017 and developed by PlatinumGames, Nier: Automata continued the story of the 2010 game Nier, which itself was a spin-off from Square Enix’s Drakengard series. While Nier: Automata built on the world of the first Nier, it offered a completely different experience with fast-paced action and a story set thousands of years later, essentially creating a new narrative.
Released in 2017, Nier: Automata quickly became a critical and commercial success, earning widespread acclaim and numerous awards. It has now sold over 10 million copies, a milestone for the Nier and Drakengard series. The game’s popularity also led to expanded content, including novels, stage plays, and an anime adaptation. Originally launched on PlayStation 4, it was later released on PC in 2017, Xbox One in 2018, and Nintendo Switch in 2022.
Nier: Automata Celebration Video Teases The Future of the Franchise
During a livestream celebrating the ninth anniversary of Nier: Automata, Square Enix announced that the Nier series will continue. The announcement came with a trailer marking the game selling over 10 million copies, ending with the message “Nier: Automata to be continued…” While Square Enix didn’t specify what this continuation will look like, it could be a direct sequel, a spin-off game, or something completely new, leaving fans to speculate about the future of the franchise.
Fans of the Nier series have been anticipating a new game for a while. Director Yoko Taro hinted at future plans back in February 2024, and producer Yosuke Saito suggested an announcement would come during the series’ 15th anniversary in 2025. This livestream is the first official indication from Square Enix that a new Nier project is in development, and the trailer suggests more details could be revealed soon.
It’s been nine years since the popular game Nier: Automata came out, so fans have been eager for a sequel. The game was a huge hit with critics and players alike in 2017. Since then, the only Nier game released was a 2021 remaster of the original Nier from 2010. Because of this, a brand new title would be fantastic news, particularly if it’s released around the 10th anniversary of Nier: Automata next year.
The trailer hints that the story of Nier: Automata might continue, which makes us wonder what Square Enix has planned. While Nier: Automata was a sequel to the original Nier, and that game was connected to the Drakengard series, Automata didn’t directly follow the story of any other game in the franchise. Given how different Automata was from the first Nier, it’ll be fascinating to see if the next game picks up where Automata left off, or if it takes the story in a completely new direction.
