Nintendo explained that the upcoming remasters of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen won’t be added to the Nintendo Switch Online service because they want to release them as standalone games to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise. Nintendo confirmed they are still planning to add games to NSO, pointing to titles like Pokemon Snap that are already available on the service.
To celebrate 30 years of Pokémon, The Pokémon Company announced on February 20th that Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to the Nintendo Switch. These games were first released on the Game Boy Advance in 2005 as updated versions of the original Pokémon Red and Green. FireRed and LeafGreen introduced gameplay features from the newer third generation of Pokémon games to the Kanto region and were the first GBA titles to support wireless connectivity. The Switch versions will be available on February 27th.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Are Special Cases
Now that pre-orders are open for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen ahead of their release on Pokemon Day, Nintendo has addressed some player questions. According to Nintendo, these games aren’t currently available on the Nintendo Switch Online service because they’re being released as special editions to celebrate Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary. Nintendo explained they wanted to offer fans a chance to revisit the original Pokemon adventures in the Kanto region with these unique releases.
While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will be available on Switch, online play won’t be included. Players will still be able to trade and battle locally with each other. If played on a Switch 2, the games will support the GameChat feature. Nintendo has confirmed they plan to add more games to the Nintendo Switch Online service, but haven’t announced any future Pokemon titles yet. Currently, NSO subscribers can play games like Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Stadium on the N64.
Nintendo has confirmed that Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, though the exact release dates haven’t been announced. These GameCube games will be playable through the GameCube app. While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were once listed as being compatible with Pokemon Home, Nintendo has removed that information, leaving their compatibility status uncertain.
February 27 Will Be a Big Day for Pokemon Fans

A Pokemon Presents broadcast will air on February 27th at 9:00 AM Eastern Time on the official Pokemon YouTube and Twitch channels. The presentation is expected to last around 25 minutes, and will include news about various Pokemon games and products, such as the Pokemon Trading Card Game, as well as updates on mobile games like Pokemon GO and Pokemon Unite.
Everyone is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Pokemon Presents presentation. Fans are hoping to get a first look at the next generation of Pokemon games, currently being called “Pokemon Wind and Wave” online. Pokemon has used past Pokemon Presents events to announce new games – like “Pokemon Scarlet and Violet” in 2022 – so it’s likely we’ll hear about the next generation then. We’ll have to wait and see what Pokemon has in store to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
