Assassin’s Creed Shadows Early Access Removed for All Versions

Assassin's Creed Shadows Early Access Removed for All Versions

As a long-time Assassin’s Creed fan who has been eagerly awaiting the latest installment, Shadows, I must admit I’m finding it increasingly difficult to maintain my enthusiasm for this game. The cancelation of early access, the delay in release date, and now the reduction in the Collector’s Edition price – it feels like a series of disappointments rather than anticipatory build-up.

It appears that additional unfavorable information has emerged regarding Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, particularly for those eagerly anticipating an early release. Notably, there have been cancellations of press previews and the game was absent from Tokyo Game Show last month, even though the game is set in Japan.

On the official Discord server of Assassin’s Creed, the Ubisoft Community Manager “Ubi-RealDude” announced that they have abandoned the early access plan for the game. For those who may not be familiar with this marketing strategy, publishers like Ubisoft often provide a few days of early access to their games as a perk for pre-ordering or purchasing more expensive versions. Ubisoft has utilized this tactic before, offering it for the Gold, Ultimate, and Collector’s editions of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed: Shadows Three-Day Early Access No Longer Available

Ubisoft hasn’t provided an explanation for removing early access, but in a recent FAQ update on the game’s Discord for the Collector’s Edition, Ubi-RealDude clarified that there is no longer early access available for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. This change applies across all editions of the game. On the bright side, the price of the Assassin’s Creed: Shadows Collector’s Edition has been reduced from $279.95 to $229.95, offering buyers a savings of $50 on their purchase.

Initially scheduled for release in November, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has been pushed back to February 14, 2025. Although it’s disappointing when a game is delayed, given our preliminary playthrough, it appears that this delay was necessary for the game. As one who has played an Assassin’s Creed game in the last decade, most of what Shadows offers is familiar, except for its feudal Japanese setting. However, the character Yasuke seems to be the only aspect keeping me engaged, which is unfortunate since Ubisoft had been promoting Shadows as a significant mechanical refresh for the series, leading me to anticipate something innovative.

The current problem facing Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is part of Ubisoft’s recent difficulties. Just this month, it emerged that the production cost of their long-developed pirate game Skull and Bones was a staggering $850 million, which has allegedly contributed to Ubisoft’s financial troubles. The situation has become so dire that reports suggest Ubisoft is negotiating with the massive Chinese corporation Tencent about potentially taking over the company.
