Ubisoft Montpellier‘s offices were recently cleared due to a bomb threat. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the incident has understandably caused concern and distress among Ubisoft staff.
Unfortunately, unsettling incidents like this have happened before in the gaming industry, even at another Ubisoft office. In 2020, Ubisoft Montreal received reports of a hostage situation, which thankfully turned out to be a false alarm. However, it understandably caused significant fear and anxiety.
Ubisoft Montpellier Faces Bomb Scare

I was really shocked to hear that Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio behind games like Rayman, had to be evacuated last February 19th. Apparently, they received a bomb threat – someone sent an email to the police saying there was a device either inside or near the building. The police quickly showed up and set up a safety zone, and almost 500 Ubisoft employees, plus hundreds more from surrounding offices, had to leave. Thankfully, after a thorough search by bomb disposal experts and firefighters, they didn’t find anything!

According to a GameSpot report, Ubisoft employees have now returned to the Montpellier studio after a recent incident. It’s unclear whether the person who made the false report still poses a danger, or if it was simply a ‘swatting’ prank – a false emergency call designed to bring police to someone’s location. While the threat was unsettling for those at Ubisoft Montpellier and nearby buildings, thankfully no one was injured.
Sadly, threats against game studios and developers are happening more and more often. Major companies like Nintendo, Capcom, and Insomniac Games have all been targeted, sometimes leading to canceled events and a lot of stress for everyone involved. The internet’s anonymity allows some people to make threats easily when they’re unhappy with a game. For instance, actress Laura Bailey received death threats because players disliked her character in The Last of Us Part 2. Studios and developers are also threatened for things like slow updates or if a game doesn’t meet players’ expectations.
Game studios are increasingly dealing with threats, and sometimes taking legal steps against those responsible. Some individuals have been prosecuted – for example, after a fake hostage situation at Ubisoft Montreal, the person responsible received three years of community service and was required to get mental health treatment. Nintendo also had to cancel a public event in 2024 and eventually made an arrest to ensure the safety of its employees and attendees.
Gamers, particularly those who stream online, are frequent targets of ‘swatting’ – a dangerous prank where someone falsely reports a serious emergency to trigger a large police response at another person’s address. These incidents can be incredibly traumatic, interrupting streams with unexpected police raids and even causing lasting psychological trauma like PTSD. Tragically, swatting has even resulted in deaths, with innocent people being killed by responding officers. One particularly devastating case involved someone with no connection to the original false report who lost their life. The person responsible was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
It’s still unclear whether the police will be able to find the person responsible for the fake bomb threat.
