As a seasoned anime enthusiast who has witnessed countless tales of love and power, I must say that the story of Blue Exorcist takes the cake! The events leading up to the Blue Night are nothing short of heart-wrenching, with a blend of love, betrayal, and the eternal quest for a physical form.

In the captivating world of Blue Exorcist, I found myself initially clueless about the happenings of that fateful Blue Night. Yet, it wasn’t until episode 5 of the anime that even a glimpse of the night’s story unfolded for me. From what I could gather, the Blue Night appeared to be Satan hunting down humans in Assiah, seemingly at random, in his quest for a suitable human vessel.

During the Blue Night Investigation storyline, it emerged that Okumura’s Rin and Yukio were not what they seemed, as well as uncovering why Satan had taken possession of numerous holy men and his motivations behind such actions. It was also discovered that there were two versions of the Blue Night: one fabricated to shift blame onto Satan due to confidentiality agreements, while the true events remained hidden.

What is the Blue Night?

The Blue Night Had Taken the Lives of Many and Brought Chaos to Assiah

Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night, Explained

As a gamer, I’ve come across two narratives about the enigmatic event known as the Blue Night. The first story, spun by survivors, paints a picture of ordinary occurrences to conceal the true nature behind this strange night. The second account, however, is the chilling truth – a tale of Satan attempting to inhabit a suitable body in Assiah, a world I’ve come to know, through his possession of numerous humans on that fateful Blue Night. This is why it’s called the Blue Night, a name laden with mystery and intrigue.

16 years back, I was under the impression that an event known as the Blue Night transpired. During this time, it’s said that Satan allegedly wiped out a vast number of the world’s most revered spiritual leaders. Among these victims were members from the Myo Dha temple, the Vatican, Grigori, and other influential spiritual figures. As outlined in Chapter 110, blue flames are thought to be Satan’s emblem when his realm, Assiah (symbolized by red flame), intersects with ours, the human world, and Gehenna, the Demon world, symbolized by black flame. The resulting color is a blend of these two, hence the blue flame.

Discussing the original account of the Blue Night can be tricky with people who weren’t present during the events. To some, the Blue Night seemed sudden and it appeared that Satan started taking control of humans at random, seeking a host. Since the great loss of life occurred sixteen years ago, there are many who hold resentment towards Satan and strive to vanquish him, much like Suguro Ryuji does in his aspirations.

That fateful night not only took a toll on those within the exorcism circle through deaths, but also caused a significant exodus from the Myo Dha temple. The temple, now branded as “cursed,” saw many individuals departing, leading to a decline in attendance by monks and devotees. This could potentially lead to a financial crisis, impacting the temple’s income and sustenance.

According to what’s been shared earlier, the accounts given by the Blue Night survivors might not be entirely accurate. In truth, every survivor of the Blue Night had agreed to a Morinath Contract. This agreement was designed to conceal the true happenings of the Blue Night, which were kept hidden by the True Cross Order of Knights. If a contract holder dared to disclose the genuine events of the Blue Night and went against the contract, a demon would be summoned to take their life.

What Are the Actual Events of the Blue Night?

Satan Sensed Yuri Was on the Verge of Death, and Enraged, He Began Possessing Others in Search of Her

In another account of events, it was 16 years ago when Yuri Egin was on the verge of giving birth to Okumura Rin and Yukio. Tragically, Yuri’s due date had been overdue by four weeks, leading to a terrifying childbirth experience for her. Since Yuri was carrying Satan’s offspring, she couldn’t receive any medical help because of the Cradle Barrier – a curse that prevented anyone from interfering with the birth process.

When Yuri gave birth to Rin, who carried the Blue Flames of Satan within her, chaos ensued around her due to Rin’s demonic nature emerging at birth. You see, as previously stated, Satan was in search of a new body to inhabit. At the instant of Yuri’s labor, the body that Satan had been temporarily occupying was on the verge of collapse. This deterioration also affected the host’s brain, which may have caused his unusual behavior.

Following the birth of Rin, Yuri was on the brink of death. Perceiving that Yuri might perish, Satan felt a sense of desperation and longing, causing him to frenziedly seek her out. The Blue Night originated as Satan embarked on his quest to locate Yuri who was near death’s door. In order to find her, Satan started to take control of various individuals, hoping it would lead him to her whereabouts. As Satan became increasingly fixated on Yuri, he grew convinced that she had deceived him after they made a vow to remain together. Since he couldn’t locate her, Satan, in his rage, began to transfer from one body to another in pursuit of her.

In the end, it was Father Fujimoto who succumbed to Satan’s possession. This was because he was one of the clones produced in Section 13. Despite this, Father Fujimoto’s mental fortitude allowed him to defeat Satan’s control, thereby sparing Rin and Yukio from execution.

What Were the Events That Led Up to the Blue Night

Satan Had Been in Love With Yuri Since He Met Her as Rinka; However, He Also Sought a Corporal Form

In her younger years, Yuri believed she met a tiny spirit named Rinka. Unbeknownst to her, this spirit was none other than Satan, who had developed feelings for Yuri and persistently sought her out, offering protection. Following Yuri’s adoption by the Asylum, the little blue spirit remained nearby, always vigilant over her.

Currently, the Asylum and Section 13 were engaged in scientific endeavors aimed at granting Lucifer, the Radiant Ruler, a physical human form. One experiment had proven successful, and shortly thereafter, Satan started inhabiting this body. This body would serve as a conduit for Satan to interact with Yuri. However, unlike typical beings, Satan lacked an ego or personal identity at that point.

After obtaining books and knowledge, Satan found out who he was. This can be blamed on the facility since the information came too swiftly, causing Satan’s self-awareness to develop prematurely. Despite having an identity and knowledge, Satan remained immature and acted based on his instincts and impulses alone.

To keep Satan from causing disorder, Yuri chose to cohabit with Satan to fulfill his longings. All entities in Gehenna lack physical forms and senses unlike humans. Despite Satan’s affection for Yuri, what he yearned for most was a tangible body. Satan felt that he had lost his body because Yuri did not reciprocate his love, which he perceived as betrayal, as discussed in Chapter 119. Regrettably, the vessel hosting Satan couldn’t withstand his power, causing it to rapidly decay as Yuri approached her due date. However, fear of losing Yuri drove Satan into a rage, leading him to take over and kill anyone standing between him and her.

Blue Exorcist is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
