One Piece: How Luffy Can Still Improve His Haki, Explained

This post contains spoilers for One Piece.

Monkey D. Luffy leads the Straw Hat Pirates and is known as one of the most powerful fighters in the world of One Piece. He’s faced many tough opponents, and with each battle, he’s become more determined and stronger. There was a time when it seemed impossible for him to lose.

The final arc of One Piece has featured villains who have defeated Luffy in battle, showing he still needs to grow stronger to become the most powerful character in the series. One area where Luffy could improve is his Haki.

Luffy Has All Three Types Of Haki

Luffy Can Use Every Type Of Haki

  • Luffy needs to become stronger to beat his next enemies
  • Gaban will teach him about another Haki application

In the world of One Piece, very few characters master all three forms of Haki, and Luffy is among them. It’s notable that Luffy first awakened Conqueror’s Haki, showcasing his immense strength of will. He then learned Armament and Observation Haki during his two-year training with Silvers Rayleigh. Rayleigh also helped Luffy control his Conqueror’s Haki without needing intense emotions.

I’m not interested in ruling or taking over anything. I just believe the pirate who is truly the freest on the seas deserves the title of Pirate King.

After finishing his training, Luffy rejoined his crew and continued his quest for the One Piece. He’d become strong enough to defeat many opponents in the New World, but that changed when he fought Charlotte Katakuri, the most powerful commander among the Big Mom Pirates.

Katakuri was a master of all three types of Haki, but he was especially skilled with Armament and Observation Haki. His Observation Haki allowed him to see glimpses of the future, making him incredibly difficult to fight. Luffy, however, refused to give up. Through intense focus and constant improvement, he developed a similar ability to see into the future and strengthened his Armament Haki, ultimately leading to his win.

Luffy developed a new Haki ability during the Wano Country arc, learning Ryou from Hyogoro, which allowed him to damage opponents internally. While powerful, it wasn’t enough to defeat Kaido. Fortunately, the author, Oda, then gave Luffy the power to coat his attacks with Conqueror’s Haki, making them significantly stronger and ultimately allowing him to overcome Kaido. After Wano, many fans thought Luffy’s Haki had reached its limit, but that’s actually not the case.

During the battle on Egghead Island, Luffy discovered that his current attacks can’t harm opponents who can regenerate, like Saturn and the other Elders. Despite numerous attempts, he couldn’t inflict any lasting damage, and the Elders were clearly winning. If not for Emet and the Giants, the Straw Hat Pirates would have been defeated. This means Luffy’s next power boost needs to focus on overcoming the regenerative abilities of the Elders, the Holy Knights, and even Imu.

  • It was once thought that immortal beings couldn’t be harmed, but Scopper Gaban showed that wasn’t true.

Even the Pirate King’s first mate confirmed that overcoming Imu’s ability requires Conqueror’s Haki. Because Luffy is already skilled with this power, he should be able to learn how to counter Imu’s regeneration fairly quickly. Mastering this technique would be a huge leap forward in Luffy’s journey to defeat Imu and any future enemies. While some fans wonder if the author will give Luffy this power-up during the Elbaf arc, the current events there suggest a hero is needed, and Luffy is well-positioned to fill that role.

Luffy has overcome many strong opponents, but his future battles will be much more challenging. The story suggests he’s headed for a confrontation with the Holy Knights and Imu. He may also eventually face Akainu, the marine who killed Ace. While they haven’t met yet, a showdown between Luffy and Akainu seems increasingly likely.

It’s highly likely Luffy and Blackbeard will eventually battle each other. They’re both pursuing the same goal, making a confrontation unavoidable. Right now, Blackbeard has a significant advantage with his two powerful Devil Fruits. While Luffy might be able to deal with the Gura Gura no Mi, the Yami Yami no Mi presents a much bigger problem, as it can negate other Devil Fruit abilities. Luffy will need to figure out a way around this. Their fight promises to be incredible.
