How to Get Flash in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
HM05 Flash Location
- Requirements: HM01 Cut, 10 different Pokemon species captured
You can get HM05 Flash by speaking to Professor Oak’s assistant on Route 2 once you’ve caught 10 different kinds of Pokémon in Pokémon FireRed or LeafGreen. Route 2 is just south of Pewter City, but you’ll need to use HM01 Cut to clear some trees and access the eastern part of the route.
You’ll primarily need Flash (HM05) to see inside the Rock Tunnel on Route 10. If you’re coming from there, the quickest way back to Route 2, near Pewter City, is to travel through Diglett’s Cave, which is east of Vermilion City.
To get there from Route 10, go back to Cerulean City by way of Route 9. From there, travel south on Route 5 and use the Underground Path near the Day Care to reach Vermilion City via Route 6.
From Vermilion City, take the eastern exit and you’ll immediately come across Diglett’s Cave.
Diglett’s Cave is full of Diglett with an ability that stops you from escaping battles. To avoid unwanted fights, either use a Repel item or send out a Rattata with the Run Away ability first.
Travel completely through Diglett’s Cave, and when you come out the other side, you’ll be on Route 2 (East).
Go south and use HM01 Cut to chop down the tree. Then, go inside the southern building – you’ll find Professor Oak’s assistant there.
Speak with him, and he’ll check if your Pokedex contains information on ten different Pokemon. If it does, he’ll give you HM05 Flash as a reward.
If you have the HM02 Fly move available when not in battle, use it to travel to Pewter City. Then, go south onto Route 2 and use the Cut HM to clear the trees to the east, which will lead you to the building where Professor Oak’s assistant is located.
How to Use Flash in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
You can only use the move Flash outside of battles once you’ve beaten Brock at the Pewter City Gym and earned the Boulder Badge.
The move Flash helps illuminate dark indoor areas, letting you see the layout of caves like the Rock Tunnel on Route 10 in the FireRed and LeafGreen games. While it’s possible to get through the Rock Tunnel without using Flash, it’s very difficult and easy to get lost.
Before you can use Flash, you need to make sure one of your Pokémon knows the move and is in your party. When you’re in a dark area where Flash can help, pause the game, go to your Pokémon list, and choose the Pokémon that has learned the move.
Choose the blue Flash option from the menu, and your Pokémon will illuminate the cave. This light will stay on as long as you don’t exit. If you leave and come back, you’ll need to use Flash again.
