Once again, crypto has proven that it’s not just about digital fortunes-it’s about survival in the real world, or at least that’s what @sillytuna seems to have learned the hard way. After reporting an attack and subsequent coercion, this unfortunate soul claims he was forced to move nearly $24 million in crypto, leaving a trail that’s now sparking alarm in the crypto community. Apparently, the lesson here is that being a whale in crypto can get you harpooned in real life.
Allegations of Violence and Coercion
On March 4, @sillytuna shared the horrific story of how his attackers didn’t just hack him digitally, but threatened to hack him physically with kidnapping and even worse. According to him, the threats weren’t just ‘chit-chat’ but involved actual violence to get him to unlock his wallet and send those sweet, sweet crypto assets. Police are now involved, no word on whether they’ve had time to check if the wallet starts with 0x6fe0…
The assets at the center of this crime were not some small-time token either; they included a cool $24 million in aEthUSDC, the type of crypto that lets you make passive income with every move-except this one wasn’t voluntary. The transfer went off without a hitch, proving once again that blockchain tech doesn’t care if you’re under duress-it still confirms transactions faster than a speeding ticket.
On-Chain Tracking and Fund Movement
Enter PeckShield, the blockchain’s trusty watchdog. PeckShield initially flagged the huge transaction, speculating it might be a “poisoning” attack-oh, how cute, phishing in the crypto world. But soon, the trader made it clear that it wasn’t a scam, just a case of being physically mugged into compliance.
The fun didn’t stop there. After the crime, the attacker decided to play ‘mix-and-match’ with the funds, swapping $20 million into DAI stablecoin. This was followed by splitting the stolen loot into two separate wallets, each holding around $10 million. Talk about making a clean getaway-except, the funds didn’t exactly vanish into thin air. Some of the stolen cash has already been funneled through Arbitrum, proving that criminals really do want to diversify their portfolios.
For those curious, the transfer came via the Aave USDC V3 pool on Avalanche, an exchange that is now a little more infamous thanks to this stunt.
A Rare but Serious “Wrench Attack”
This incident brings the term “wrench attack” back into the spotlight. No, it’s not a new crypto protocol, but rather a term that describes an unfortunate reality: getting physically attacked to give up your crypto. It’s not about a code vulnerability or phishing; it’s about brute force-both in the physical and digital sense. Unfortunately, once the blockchain confirms a transaction, it’s like trying to unscrew a nut that’s been welded in place. No go. And that’s what makes these attacks so unnerving-no hacker, just a human on the receiving end of a very real threat.
Investigation Ongoing
The stolen funds are still visible on the blockchain, and haven’t yet been laundered through the usual ‘mixing’ services-at least not as of this writing. That gives authorities a small window of opportunity to track where the funds are heading next.
So far, no suspects have been named, and investigators are still piecing together the puzzle. But it serves as a cautionary tale: While crypto wallets may be secure against the digital world’s hackers, you might still need to watch out for the guy with the wrench.
