The Best Mega Pokemon For Raids in Pokemon GO

The Pokemon series has evolved a lot over time, with new additions constantly changing how the games are played. One of the biggest recent changes is the introduction of Mega Pokemon. In Pokemon GO, Mega Pokemon are essential for overcoming difficult challenges, particularly in 5-Star and Mega Raids.

With new Mega Evolutions appearing frequently in Pokémon GO, it can be tough to figure out which ones are most effective for battling in raids and gyms. Plus, some Mega Evolutions aren’t worth the resources needed to unlock them. This guide breaks down the best Mega Evolutions currently available, helping you decide where to spend your valuable Stardust to easily conquer challenging raids.

Mega Rayquaza

Mega Rayquaza is the strongest Pokémon for PvE Raids, boasting incredible stats – a maximum CP of 6458, 377 Attack, 210 Defense, and 227 HP. While its Dragon/Flying typing faces some tough opponents, it’s still very effective. Mega Rayquaza became especially popular after Mega Dragonite’s raids, quickly becoming the best counter and dealing the most damage.

Players fortunate enough to unlock Mega Rayquaza with its Dragon Ascent move have an incredibly powerful Pokémon. It can easily defeat opponents weak to Dragon and Flying-type attacks, and even against resistant foes, it deals massive damage each turn. For these reasons, Mega Rayquaza is widely considered the strongest Mega Evolution in the game.

Mega Dragonite

As a Dragon-type fan, I’m seriously impressed with Mega Dragonite! It’s a real powerhouse with 5452 CP and awesome stats – 299 Attack, 255 Defense, and 209 HP. If you’re like me and love Dragons but don’t have a Mega Rayquaza, this is the way to go. It absolutely dominates with moves like Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor, making it a top-tier Dragon-type attacker.

While some consider Mega Dragonite slow or a weaker top-tier Pokémon, it’s actually incredibly powerful, versatile, and durable – easily ranking as one of the best. Even though it doesn’t have a wide range of moves, it’s still very effective in raids.

Mega Gengar

Mega Gengar is widely considered the strongest Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO and is a must-have for any serious Raid team. Although it doesn’t have the highest overall CP, Mega Gengar boasts the highest Attack stat in the game, reaching 349. What really sets it apart is its versatility – almost any Quick Move you teach it will work well in Raids.

For quick attacks, Lick, Shadow Claw, Hex, and Sucker Punch are excellent choices. Shadow Ball is the strongest charged attack, though Focus Blast can be useful in specific situations. Considering everything, Mega Gengar is generally considered the best Mega Evolution to invest in while playing Pokemon GO.

Primal Kyogre

Primal Kyogre isn’t technically a Mega Evolution, but it functions in a very similar way. As the most powerful Water-type Pokémon for battling in gyms and raids right now, it deserves to be considered one of the best choices for those encounters.

Primal Kyogre is incredibly effective against many Rock, Ground, and Fire-type Raid Bosses thanks to its Waterfall and Origin Pulse attacks. It’s also a strong choice when battling Giovanni, in most situations.

Primal Groudon

Primal Groudon is a powerful Pokémon with a unique evolution called Primal Regression. While technically not a Mega Evolution, it functions almost identically. It’s considered the strongest Earth-type attacker, capable of dealing massive damage with its Mud Shot and Precipice Blades combination, especially against Electric, Steel, Fire, Grass, Ice, and Bug types.

Okay, let me tell you, this Pokémon is an absolute powerhouse in raids and Gym battles – seriously, one of the best. The catch? It’s incredibly rare. You could only get it during a special event a while back, so unless you’re a long-time player who unlocked its special form then, you’re probably out of luck. It’s a fantastic Pokémon, but unfortunately, it’s not available to most of us.

Mega Lucario

Mega Lucario remains the strongest Steel and Fighting-type Mega Evolution in Pokémon GO. It’s a consistently powerful attacker with high speed, making it a top pick for raids where Steel or Fighting-type moves are effective. While its best moveset for raids is typically Force Palm and Aura Sphere, some players also have success using Meteor Mash instead of Aura Sphere.

Mega Lucario is a powerful attacker with a maximum CP of 4325. Its stats – 310 Attack, 175 Defense, and 172 HP – mean it can inflict massive damage before being defeated. Plus, it’s cheaper to fully power up than many other Pokémon, making it a great choice for players.

Mega Tyranitar

As a huge Pokémon GO player, I can tell you that Mega Tyranitar is the raid tank, at least if you’re not facing a type disadvantage. Since its release during Adventure Week 2023, it’s been the best when it comes to sheer bulk and defense. It does cost a bit to fully power up – you need to get it to 6045 CP with perfect IVs – but trust me, once you do, it’s an absolute beast in raids.

This Pokémon performs best in raids with either Bite or Brutal Swing if used as a Dark-type attacker, or with Smack Down and Stone Edge as a Rock-type attacker. Both movesets are very effective, making this Pokémon a reliable choice for raids.

Mega Blaziken

Mega Blaziken is a powerful choice in Pokemon GO, even though it’s weak against Flying, Ground, Water, and Psychic-type moves. It boasts an incredibly high Attack stat – 329, one of the best among all Mega Pokemon. However, because of its multiple weaknesses, it isn’t quite the strongest Mega Pokemon available.

Mega Blaziken performs best with Counter as its Quick Move and Blast Burn as its Elite Charge Move. Counter is the ideal Quick Move because it builds up energy for Blast Burn much faster – at a rate of 8% per second – compared to other options.

Mega Diancie

Mega Latios & Latias

As a long-time Pokémon GO player, I can tell you that Mega Latios and Mega Latias are seriously powerful, but it’s not just about their raw strength – they don’t even have the highest CP, topping out around 5,000. What makes them so good is their typing: Dragon and Psychic. That dual-typing gives them a ton of resistances – they can take hits from Fighting, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, and even other Psychic-types! That makes them absolutely perfect for taking down a lot of the Pokémon Sierra throws at you.

Okay, so if you’re building a strong team with Mega Latios and Latias, I’ve found that Dragon Breath is their best Quick Move – it does a solid amount of damage. For their Charge Moves, I recommend Psychic for Mega Latios and Outrage for Mega Latias. Just a heads-up though, Mega Evolving them for the first time costs 300 Mega Energy each, so you’ll need to grind a bit to collect enough before you can really start using them in Raids!

Mega Gardevoir

Mega Gardevoir is currently the strongest Fairy-type attacker in Pokémon GO and a great choice for battling Dragon-type Raid Bosses. Its moves, Charm and Dazzling Gleam, give it an incredibly high damage output of 360, making it a must-have for raids against Pokémon like Mega Dragonite, Mega Rayquaza (if it returns), and Mega Garchomp.

Mega Gardevoir is a strong Psychic-type attacker, though not quite as powerful as top choices like Mewtwo and Mega Alakazam. Its Confusion and Psychic attacks combined deal over 378 damage, making it a good option for Fighting-type raids.

Mega Victreebel

Mega Victreebel is a relatively new Pokémon, but it’s quickly become popular because it’s affordable – it doesn’t require a lot of Stardust or Candy to power up. While its maximum CP of 3963 isn’t the highest among Mega Pokémon, it makes up for it with strong Attack (265), Defense (181), and HP (190) stats. These are impressive numbers for a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon that’s easy on your resources.

While not quite as powerful as Mega Sceptile or Venusaur, Mega Victreebel still packs a punch with its Magical Leaf and Sludge Bomb combination, dealing over 280 damage. It’s a strong attacker, and although it doesn’t reach the highest levels of damage output, it’s very effective.

Mega Banette

Even before Mega Evolution, Banette is a powerful Pokémon, especially against Psychic and Dark-type opponents, thanks to its high 218 Attack stat. However, once it Mega Evolves, Banette becomes one of the most formidable Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO. With a Base Attack of 312 and a maximum CP of 3,590, it’s a solid choice when battling Pokémon like Terrakion.

For Mega Banette, Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball are the best moves to use. Shadow Claw is a fast attack that, while not dealing huge damage, attacks very quickly in Pokemon GO. Shadow Ball is a powerful charge move with a damage output of 100, which is good for a Dark-type attack.

Mega Swampert

Mega Swampert might initially appear to be just another balanced Pokémon with its stats (283 Attack, 218 Defense, 225 Stamina). However, it’s considered one of the top Mega Evolutions in Pokémon GO because its only real weakness is Grass-type attacks. It’s strong against Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel, and Fire-type Pokémon, giving it a significant advantage.

Mega Swampert is most effective with the moves Mud Shot and Hydro Cannon, though Hydro Cannon requires an Elite TM. If you don’t have an Elite TM, you can use Surf or Earthquake instead. Unless the Raid Pokémon is primarily Grass-type (like Virizion), Mega Swampert should easily defeat 3- and 4-star Raids.

Mega Sceptile

Mega Sceptile is a powerful Mega Evolution available in Pokemon GO, ranking among the very best. While it does have some weaknesses against certain types of Pokemon, it can be a strong attacker in Raids. This is thanks to its high Attack stat (320) and impressive HP (147), which are greater than many other Mega Evolved Pokemon.

Mega Sceptile is effective in battle when using Fury Cutter as a quick attack and Frenzy Plant as a charged attack. While Bullet Seed and Earthquake are also options, they don’t quite pack the same punch.

Mega Blastoise

Blastoise was one of the earliest Water-type Pokémon to get a “Mega” Evolution in Pokémon GO, making it a valuable addition to any trainer’s Raid team. At its maximum level, Mega Blastoise boasts 264 Attack, 237 Defense, and 188 Stamina. Although its Attack isn’t the highest of all Mega Pokémon, its impressive Defense stat makes it a durable Pokémon capable of withstanding significant damage.

The best moves for Mega Blastoise are Bite as its Fast Move and Hydro Cannon as its Charged Move. Bite attacks quickly, letting you charge Hydro Cannon often. If you have extra Squirtle Candies, you can also teach Blastoise Ice Beam as another Charged Move option.

Mega Venusaur

Mega Venusaur has proven to be a strong Mega Evolution for quite some time. It boasts impressive stats – 241 Attack, 246 Defense, and 190 HP – making it a solid all-around performer in Raids. It’s a durable attacker that excels against Rock, Water, and Ground-type Raid Bosses.

The best moves for this Pokémon are Vine Whip as a fast attack and Frenzy Plant as a charged attack. Frenzy Plant is a very powerful Grass-type move in Pokémon GO, and because it charges quickly, it can be used often. Solar Beam is another option for a charged attack, but Sludge Bomb provides extra damage against different types of opponents and is useful in battles against gyms and raids.

Mega Pidgeot

The Mega Pidgeot is a consistently powerful Pokémon with an impressive attack stat of 280, making it a top-tier Flying-type attacker. When used with the moves Gust and Brave Bird, and with perfect timing, it can achieve a damage output of over 292.

Mega Pidgeot is a great choice for new Pokémon GO players because it’s easy and affordable to get. Pidgey, the Pokémon you need to evolve into Pidgeot and then Mega Pidgeot, is simple to level up – you get candies just by walking with it as your Buddy. Plus, it doesn’t take much Mega Energy to unlock Mega Pidgeot for the first time – you can earn enough by defeating Mega Pidgeot in a Raid!

Mega Houndoom

As a huge Pokémon GO player, I’m telling you, Mega Houndoom is a real powerhouse. It’s Dark- and Fire-type, which makes it amazing against Ghost, Psychic, Bug, Grass, Ice, and Steel-type Raid bosses. Plus, it can learn Snarl, one of the most damaging attacks in the game, letting you take down even tough Legendary Pokémon like Deoxys pretty easily. Seriously, it’s a must-have for any serious raider!

To make Mega Houndoom a strong Dark-type attacker, trainers should teach it the moves Snarl and Foul Play. If you already have a powerful Mega Absol, though, you can instead use Fire Fang and Fire Blast to build Mega Houndoom as a powerful Fire-type attacker.

Mega Ampharos

Mega Ampharos isn’t a very popular choice in Pokemon GO because it doesn’t have much Defense. However, it does boast a strong Attack stat of 294, which is better than many other Mega Evolutions.

Mega Ampharos is only really vulnerable to Ground-type Pokémon because it’s an Electric-type. Luckily, Ground-type Pokémon rarely appear in raids, so it’s not a major concern. To maximize damage, players should teach Ampharos either Volt Switch or Charge Beam as a Fast Move, and Zap Cannon as a Charged Move.

Mega Aerodactyl

Aerodactyl is a Flying-type Pokémon with a surprising limitation: it can’t actually learn any Flying-type moves. This means players usually have to rely on Rock-type attacks. Luckily, most of the Rock-type moves Aerodactyl can learn are very effective against Pokémon in Raids. A good Fast Move for Aerodactyl is Rock Throw, and for its Charged Move, players can choose between Ancient Power and Rock Slide.

While Mega Aerodactyl is a great choice for Raids, it can be difficult to obtain enough Mega Energy because Aerodactyl doesn’t appear in Raids very often. You can earn some Mega Energy through Special Research, but getting enough Candy to fully power up Aerodactyl is also a challenge. Unless there’s a special event featuring Aerodactyl, it takes significant time and effort, making it a relatively expensive Pokémon to max out.

Mega Charizard Y

Mega Charizard Y is widely considered the strongest Fire-type Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO. It also boasts a very high maximum CP of 5,037, making it one of the most powerful Pokemon in the game. Specifically, Mega Charizard Y has an impressive Attack stat of 319 and a Defense stat of 212.

When choosing moves for your Pokemon, you have a few good options that are all effective in raids. A popular choice for Mega Charizard Y is the combination of Fire Spin (Fast Move) and Blast Burn (Charged Move). Air Slash and Wing Attack (both Fast Moves) are also available, but players don’t use them as often.
