As a long-time esports enthusiast who’s witnessed more ups and downs than a rollercoaster ride, I can confidently say that the BLAST Premier: World Final was an exhilarating spectacle! The unpredictable nature of the esports world was once again on full display with G2 Esports’ victory over Team Spirit. One moment they’re shining bright, the next they’re stumbling in the shadows – it’s a dance only the hardiest of hearts can master.
G2 has just swept Team Spirit in the grand final of the BLAST Premier: World Final event in Singapore to net the $500,000 prize. In this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tournament, eight teams landed in Singapore to fight for the lion’s share of the $1 million prize pool. This event effectively marked the end of a year-long BLAST Premier schedule.
Unstoppable
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, G2 Esports has had an outstanding year in the Counter-Strike arena, that is, until a minor hiccup. In June, our team clinched the number one spot at IEM Dallas, outsmarting Vitality in the finals to pocket $100,000. After that triumph, things started to get a bit rocky.
The team triumphed at the BLAST Premier Fall Final tournament, pocketing a prize of $200,000, but less than a week later, they found themselves in last position at IEM Rio, winning nothing and taking home only $4,000 in winnings.
Consequently, the team emerged victorious at the BLAST Premier World Final, pocketing a cool $500,000 as their prize.
If that’s not representative of the volatility of the esports business, I don’t know what is.
In the group stage, G2 put up an impressive showing, but Astralis played exceptionally well butting heads with them, almost ensuring their success. In fact, Astralis’ performance was so outstanding that they amassed a map count of +24 during the groups, which was over three times better than any other team – even G2 themselves. Unfortunately, it all came apart in the semifinals when Team Spirit eliminated Astralis from further competition.
In the thrilling championship match, it boiled down to Spirit and G2, yet astonishingly, G2 managed to dominate with a 3-0 sweep, eliminating Spirit from the tournament and claiming the prize.
Beyond Counter-Strike esports, there’s the Perfect World Shanghai Major yet to unfold this month, boasting a hefty $1.25 million prize fund. Could G2 Esports elevate their success further and secure the number one position at this event too?
