While many know Sonic the Hedgehog from video games, the franchise has expanded into TV shows, anime, comics, books, and even major movies. Most of these stories feature the familiar characters from the games – there are so many to choose from! – but sometimes, a completely new character appears and becomes truly memorable. These aren’t just minor villains or characters with small roles; they often become some of the best-loved Sonic characters in the entire series.
If you only know Sonic from the Sega games, I suggest checking out the Archie Comics series. It introduced a lot of fantastic characters who probably won’t appear in the games—maybe just as quick cameos. 6. Zonic The Zone Cop
A Parallel Universe Sonic Who Must Make Sure That His Alter Egos Don’t Run Amok

This hedgehog is similar to Sonic, but he comes from a different dimension called the No Zone. This dimension is set at a unique angle to all other realities. He travels between these realities to keep an eye on things, and because of his dimension’s angle, he often appears tilted or sideways. He frequently asks Sonic for help with missions involving alternate worlds.
While Zonic is the most well-known Zone Cop, he’s not the only one. Other characters, like Zespio, Zector, and Zouge, also work as Zone Cops in different roles. There’s even a version of Dr. Robotnik, called Warden Zobotnik, who, just like the original, doesn’t get along with Zonic, even though they’re colleagues.
5. Cosmo the Seedrian
A Character That Fits The Sonic Cast Perfectly

Cosmo appeared as a supporting character in the third season of the anime series Sonic X (2003-2006), which was inspired by the Sonic Adventure games. She was an alien with plant-like qualities who became a target for the Metarex, a group of cyborgs determined to destroy all non-plant life in the galaxy. Sonic and his friends rescued Cosmo, and she asked for their help in stopping the Metarex. Over time, she became friends with the group, especially Miles “Tails” Prower.
Sadly, Cosmo realized the only way to defeat the Metarex was to give her life. Tails was heartbroken and hesitant, but she convinced him to help. Even after her passing, Sonic managed to save Cosmo’s essence as a seed. Tails lovingly planted the seed and cared for it as it sprouted and grew.
Cosmo is a pretty standard Sonic character, but that’s not a weakness. She’s kind and often tries to do more than she needs to. Plus, her connection with Tails is really sweet and endearing.

4. Mammoth Mogul
One Of The Best Sonic Villains Has Never Been In A Game
- Appears In: Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, Kunckles the Echidna, and Sonic Super Special (Archie Comics)
This Mobian Mammoth is a powerful, long-living villain whose strength comes from a Chaos Emerald that became part of him. The Emerald granted him intelligence, a long lifespan, and a variety of abilities he uses to carry out his schemes. He generally considers himself superior to others, but his plans usually fail, often because Sonic interferes.
Though Mammoth Mogul consistently acted as a villain throughout the series, he eventually stopped actively trying to cause trouble. After repeatedly losing to Sonic, he came to believe Sonic was invincible and decided it was better to wait for Sonic to become weak or die. There’s also a version of Mammoth Mogul from a devastated future timeline, where he’s a regretful mentor who helps Silver and wishes he’d done more to prevent the disaster that destroyed their world.
Honorable mention to Dr. Starline, who is probably the best original villain in the IDW comics.
3. Agent Stone
A Hilarious Sidekick to Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik

Dr. Ivo Robotnik often has helpers, but Agent Stone (played by Lee Majdoub) has become one of the most popular in recent years. First appearing in the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog as Robotnik’s assistant while he was working undercover for the US government, Stone’s role grew thanks to Jim Carrey’s improvisations. He quickly became a fan favorite, even getting his own poster for the sequel. What makes Stone stand out is his unwavering loyalty and affection for Robotnik, sticking by his side even after Robotnik was sent into space.
When Dr. Robotnik returned in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Stone was thrilled, even making a special latte with artwork of himself and the doctor surrounded by hearts. Stone is clever, though not as brilliant as Robotnik, and it seems he looks up to the doctor’s intelligence. He also plays a significant role in the third movie, and his relationship with Robotnik continues to be a fun part of the story.
2. Scourge the Hedgehog
The Ultimate Sonic Rival

Over the years, Sonic has faced numerous enemies, making it hard to focus on those outside of the games themselves. While Shadow and Knuckles are well-known rivals, they don’t quite stand out as his best adversary. That title actually belongs to Scourge the Hedgehog, who originally appeared as a darker version of Sonic. His initial design – a leather-jacketed Sonic – wasn’t particularly impressive, and he wouldn’t be remembered if he hadn’t developed into a more compelling character.
Scourge began as Evil Sonic, but exposure to the Master Emerald transformed him. This change wasn’t just physical – he turned green – but also allowed him to emerge as his own character, escaping his previous role as a simple parody. Surprisingly, this once-comedic villain became genuinely threatening, even conquering his own world. Because Scourge and Sonic share a similar thought process, he always understood how to provoke Sonic, and now he finally had the strength to act on it. He even won over Sonic’s girlfriend, Fiona the Fox, who was drawn to his rebellious personality.
1. Sally Acorn
One Of The Best Sonic Characters, Period

- Sally was technically in one video game, Sonic Spinball, but this minor entry remains her sole appearance in the medium.
Sally Acorn, a chipmunk princess, first appeared in the animated series Sonic the Hedgehog (1993-1994), which was DiC’s second Sonic cartoon after Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993). While both shows shared some things in common, like Jaleel White voicing Sonic, this new series featured significant changes. The story now centers on a team called The Freedom Fighters as they battle Robotnik, who rules over a grim, industrial city called Robotropolis.
Sally Acorn was a key leader of the Freedom Fighters and often contrasted with Sonic the Hedgehog. She was a princess and, at times, a romantic interest for him. Known for being smart and practical, Sally preferred careful planning to Sonic’s impulsive style. Although the animated series only lasted a little over a year, it served as the foundation for the popular Archie Comics series, where Sally remained an important character until the comic ended in 2017. While the comic books later drew more inspiration from the video games, Sally remained a consistent presence.
Sally is arguably the most compelling Sonic the Hedgehog character created for media outside of the video games. While many of the heroes have superpowers like super speed, Sally is refreshingly ordinary. She’s a brave, capable person who puts herself at risk fighting Dr. Robotnik, and feels like a relatable underdog. As a complex character, Sally juggles her responsibilities as royalty and a leader, her feelings for Sonic, and past trauma. Her imperfections and mistakes actually make her more interesting and believable.
You could definitely say Sally played a major role in keeping the Archie series going for so long.
