Image Shows How Bloodborne Looks on PS5 Pro

Key Takeaways

  • A new leaked screenshot shows what Bloodborne looks like when running on the upcoming PS5 Pro.
  • The PS5 Pro’s PSSR upscaling technology provides a crisp boost to Bloodborne’s image quality over the backwards compatible version running on PS5.
  • However, PSSR upscaling won’t be able to change Bloodborne’s 30fps framerate cap on PS5 Pro.

As a hardcore Bloodborne fan who’s traversed Yharnam countless times and even braved the Old Hunters DLC, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment upon hearing about the PS5 Pro upgrade for this beloved title. While it’s heartening to see my favorite game getting a boost in visual quality, I can’t help but wish for a smoother 60fps experience or even some additional content to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

A newly surfaced image shows how Bloodborne looks when running on the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro. While the critically-acclaimed FromSoftware title won’t be natively optimized to take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s added horsepower, the console does apply some passive improvements to Bloodborne that may be noticeable to some players.

In a short while, the advanced version of PS5, known as PS5 Pro, is about to hit the market, boasting over 80 games optimized for it. Some of these are major titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, God of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, Alan Wake 2, Helldivers 2, and many others. The enhanced GPU in PS5 Pro allows developers to significantly boost frame rates, image quality, and ray tracing abilities within their games. Additionally, the PS5 Pro will make its debut as the platform for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, a cutting-edge AI-driven resolution upscaler similar to Nvidia’s DLSS technology on personal computers.

Apart from improving image quality more than previous methods such as checkerboarding, PSSR also offers an enhancement for games originally designed for the PS4, like Bloodborne, when played on the PS5 Pro. This upgrade was demonstrated in a leaked screenshot of Bloodborne running on the PS5 Pro, suggesting that someone may have gained early access to the console. To highlight the improvement, the image includes a slider showing the contrast between Bloodborne’s visuals on a standard PS5 versus the enhanced version on the PS5 Pro.

PS5 Pro Makes Bloodborne Look Much Cleaner, But Still at 30FPS

Moving the slider back and forth noticeably enhances the visual clarity of Bloodborne on PS5 Pro. When played through backwards compatibility on the standard PS5, the game starts at a 1080p resolution. However, it appears that PSSR (PS5’s Performance Mode) significantly exceeds this when activated on the PS5 Pro. Although the precise pixel count is still unknown, it’s not too far-fetched to expect an output of around 1440p. It’s important to mention that Bloodborne’s 30 frames per second cap will stay unchanged due to being a part of its underlying code. This limit can only be removed by the developers themselves.

Although the PS5 Pro’s PSSR-enhanced image quality doesn’t match the long-awaited Bloodborne remaster that fans have been clamoring for, it still offers the best play experience for the game at this point in time. Given its large fanbase, the absence of substantial performance upgrades for Bloodborne on current-generation hardware seems puzzling, especially considering the game’s 10th anniversary is approaching. While whispers about a potential new Bloodborne project have surfaced, it’s prudent to exercise patience until an official confirmation is made, given the history of unsubstantiated rumors surrounding the game.
