The sixth generation of Pokémon games was a turning point for the series, bringing fully 3D graphics and the exciting Fairy-type Pokémon. Beyond these changes, Mega Evolution quickly became a fan-favorite feature. Even now, players enjoy finding and battling with the Mega Evolved forms of their beloved Pokémon.
Trainers throughout the Kalos region—the first to discover Mega Evolution—often utilize this incredible ability. However, not all Trainers have unlocked it, and some prefer not to use it. Despite this, Kalos is full of strong Trainers, all striving to reach their goals.
Serena Discovers Her Passion for Performing
Serena Also Becomes a Competent Battler
Serena, the character based on the female player from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, is the daughter of Grace, a former champion Rhyhorn racer. Unlike the player in the original games who focuses on becoming a strong Pokémon Trainer, Serena’s main goal is to become a Pokémon Performer. She starts the series unsure of her path but discovers Pokémon Showcases and dedicates herself to training her Pokémon for performances and battles.
When Serena reappeared in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, she had become a well-known Pokémon Performer. She was also competing as a Pokémon Coordinator again, which meant she was still battling frequently. Her Pokémon, like Delphox and Sylveon, are famous for both their elegant performances and powerful attacks. Serena later traveled to the Hoenn region to compete in more Contests, where she became friends with May, a friend of Ash’s.
Sawyer Is a Traveler From the Hoenn Region
This Trainer Is Always Studying Topics Related to Pokémon
Sawyer, a Pokémon Trainer originally from the Hoenn region (though his specific hometown is unknown), started his journey in Littleroot Town by choosing Treecko as his first Pokémon. He later traveled to the Kalos region to deepen his understanding of Pokémon and improve his battle strategies. He’s frequently seen taking detailed notes in a notebook to help him remember important information.

I’m a huge fan of Sawyer! He’s always been so eager to learn and improve, constantly seeking advice from trainers he admires like Ash and Steven Stone. It was awesome seeing him show up at the Kalos League – he’d become a seriously strong trainer in such a short time! He built an incredible team, including powerhouses like Aegislash and Salamence, and even got his Sceptile to evolve and Mega Evolve! Though Ash-Greninja eventually won their battle, everyone still talks about how strong Mega Sceptile was – it was a truly amazing Pokémon!
Clemont Is the Electric-type Gym Leader in Lumiose City
Clemont Is Very Passionate About the Wonders of Science
Anyone who’s met Clemont knows how passionate he is about science and technology. His animated version is well-known for saying, “The future is now, thanks to science!” when presenting a new invention. While some of his creations are fantastic, others sometimes malfunction. Despite these setbacks, Clemont remains dedicated to his dream of being an inventor and continues to serve as an Electric-type Gym Leader, even when he’s not in Lumiose City.
Clemont primarily trains Electric-type Pokémon, like his Gym Pokémon Heliolisk and Magneton. However, his Luxray is a special case – it’s the only Electric-type he handles himself, as his sister Bonnie usually cares for the rest. Beyond his Gym team, Clemont enjoys working with Pokémon of other types, such as Diggersby and Chespin. Like Brock, being a Gym Leader gives Clemont a lot of knowledge to share with his friends, but he’s also a strong battle opponent, as seen when Ash challenged him at the Gym.
Drasna Is a Member of the Kalos Elite Four
Drasna’s Family Is From the Sinnoh Region
Drasna is one of the Elite Four in the Kalos region, and she’s known for her friendly personality and her team of Dragon-type Pokémon. Her grandparents originally came from the Sinnoh region, but moved to Kalos sometime in the past. Growing up, she heard stories about the legendary Pokémon Palkia and Dialga, which sparked her lifelong passion for Dragon-types. During battles, Drasna always appears cheerful, but experienced trainers know she’s a surprisingly strategic and clever opponent.
Drasna is a skilled Trainer who has worked with many different Dragon-type Pokémon, including Noivern from the Kalos region and Druddigon from Unova. During her battle against Ash in the World Coronation Series, she surprised him by revealing she had a Key Stone, allowing her Altaria to Mega Evolve. Like Drasna herself, Mega Altaria enjoys playfully provoking opponents before striking. Despite losing to Ash, Drasna demonstrated she’s a formidable and intelligent Trainer, fully deserving her position as one of the Elite Four.
Alain Was Once Caught in Lysandre’s Grasp
Alain Has Since Devoted His Time To Assisting Professor Sycamore Again
Prior to the Kalos League, Alain worked as an assistant to Professor Sycamore, and his only Pokémon was Charmander. Around the time Charmander evolved into Charmeleon, he met Lysandre, a friend of the professor and a wealthy man fascinated by Fire-type Pokémon. Lysandre saw Alain as a useful asset and subtly manipulated him into joining Lysandre Labs to study Mega Evolution. Alain, believing this research would eventually benefit Professor Sycamore, agreed and was given a Mega Ring and a Charizardite X.
Throughout his Pokémon journey, Alain became known as a somewhat reserved Trainer, especially after his friend Mairin’s Chespin, Chespie, became seriously ill. In reality, his dedication to studying Mega Evolution was driven by a hope to find a cure for Chespie, as he blamed himself for its condition. He was deeply disturbed to learn that Lysandre was exploiting his research for selfish purposes and had simply used him. After helping to defeat Team Flare alongside other Trainers, Alain returned to Professor Sycamore’s lab to continue his work. Over time, Alain became more approachable and continued to train powerful Pokémon, even competing in the Masters Eight Tournament with his friend Ash.
Lysandre Seeks To Create a Beautiful World
Team Flare’s Boss Later Fell From Grace
The world of Pokémon is generally cheerful and adventurous, but it also deals with serious problems like poverty, mistreatment, and selfishness. Lysandre, a powerful and wealthy man, wasn’t always a villain. In fact, Team Flare originally started as a group meant to help people in need and provide a home for the homeless. However, Lysandre became disillusioned with the world and humanity due to the greed and negativity he witnessed. He transformed Team Flare into the villainous team fans recognize today and became obsessed with obtaining an incredibly powerful weapon created long ago by his ancestor, AZ, ignoring AZ’s warnings about its dangers.
Lysandre’s story varies across different Pokémon adaptations, but the original anime portrays one of his most dramatic ends. When Team Flare attempts to destroy Lumiose City, a powerful ally appears: Zygarde, in its Complete Forme, has mastered the move Core Enforcer. Lysandre and his technology are then consumed by the resulting green blast. While his ultimate fate remains a mystery, many fans believe the sheer force of the attack led to his destruction.
Diantha Remains the Champion of Kalos
A Finalist in the Masters Eight Tournament
Diantha is a famous actress and the first Grand Duchess of the Battle Chateau, known throughout the Kalos region and beyond. While she loves acting, she’s also a skilled Pokémon Trainer, and is rarely without her Gardevoir, whom she’s raised since it was young. Diantha was the first Champion to demonstrate Mega Evolution, and her Gardevoir often wears its Gardevoirite as a necklace, always prepared to Mega Evolve when needed. In addition to Gardevoir, Diantha’s team includes Pokémon like Gourgeist and Aurorus.
I’m a huge fan of Diantha’s character in the anime! She starts off as a supportive figure, but her role really grows, especially when Ash-Greninja first shows off that incredible Bond Phenomenon. Like all Champions, she’s got a strong sense of right and wrong, which is why we see her jumping into action against Team Flare when Lysandre tries to wreck Lumiose City. What I find really cool is that she doesn’t have just one fighting style – she adapts her strategy based on the Pokémon she’s battling with. And her connection with Gardevoir is amazing! They work together so seamlessly, Gardevoir just knows what Diantha is thinking during a battle, even without her saying a word!
