The following article contains spoilers for Naruto, its sequels and spinoffs.
The world of Naruto is rich with history and detail. As the story progresses, we discover a lot about the past, including the conflicts between ninja. Before the hidden villages were established, the Naruto world was a place of constant warfare, where everyone fought for control of land and resources. This era, known as the Warring States Period, is based on a similar time in Japanese history.
Information about powerful ninja from the earliest days is limited. Most of the famous ninja we know from this period actually lived during the time the hidden villages were being created. Figures like Hagoromo and Indra predate this era, while heroes like Minato Namikaze came after. So, here’s a look at some of the strongest ninja from this time, keeping in mind that many were also involved in building the new shinobi system.
Madara Uchiha
A Legendary Uchiha Who Almost Became Hokage
Madara grew up during a time of constant warfare, known as the Warring States Period, and lived to see the founding of the Hidden Leaf Village at the end of it. As the firstborn son of Tajima Uchiha, the clan leader, he was also believed to be a reincarnation of Indra Otsutsuki. During this period of intense conflict between the Uchiha and Senju clans, Madara initially formed a friendly, competitive relationship with Hashirama, unaware of his enemy lineage. Even after discovering each other’s identities, they tried to maintain their friendship despite the ongoing feud between their families.
Madara and his brother Izuna constantly pushed each other in training, always trying to prove who was the stronger fighter. Through this, Madara developed incredible power, first unlocking the Sharingan and then the more advanced Mangekyo Sharingan. But his close friendship with Hashirama and his hope for peace with the Senju clan were deeply damaged when Tobirama Senju killed Izuna. While Madara still wanted peace, his vision became twisted and focused on control, ultimately driving a wedge between him and Hashirama.
There’s no agreement between us. From now on, you answer to Konoha! And don’t ever mention that ninja’s name again!
— Madara Uchiha
After Hashirama became the first Hokage, the Senju clan gained prominence, which made Madara fearful and withdrawn. He left the village, but returned later, managing to control the Nine-Tailed Beast using his Mangekyo Sharingan. This led to a final battle with Hashirama, where he was defeated and killed. Records show that Madara never actually won a fight against Hashirama.
Hashirama Senju
Founder of Konoha and First Hokage
Hashirama Senju, the oldest son of the Senju clan leader Butsuma, was a powerful shinobi and the first Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village. He was also the reincarnation of Asura Otsutsuki. Living during a time of constant warfare, Hashirama dreamed of peace and worked tirelessly to end the conflict between the Senju and Uchiha clans, even considering Madara Uchiha a friend. Despite numerous battles, Hashirama always emerged victorious against Madara, playing a key role in establishing a new era of cooperation and the modern shinobi system.
After Madara returned to Konoha with the Nine-Tails, he and his opponents had their final battle. He eventually grew tired from using his Mangekyo Sharingan to control Kurama and collapsed, soon dying. Though he rarely showed his full power, Madara was known as the “God of Shinobi,” and his ability to survive a fight against a Tailed Beast proved he was truly unmatched.
Izuna Uchiha
Madara’s Younger Brother
Izuna Uchiha was a prodigious talent within the Uchiha clan, much like his older brother, Madara. He was remarkably strong and had already developed the Sharingan. Sadly, he died while accompanying his father on a mission.
The Uchiha clan attempted to kill Hashirama Senju, but they were met by Butsuma and Tobirama Senju, the leaders of the Senju clan. Madara Uchiha was present, as he was friends with Hashirama, unaware that Hashirama belonged to the Senju clan. This led to a battle between the two clans. During the fight, Izuna Uchiha activated his Mangekyo Sharingan, but he was mortally wounded by Tobirama. Izuna’s death devastated Madara and allowed Madara to obtain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan by taking his brother’s eyes.
Butsuma Senju
Former Head of the Senju Clan
Butsuma led the Senju clan and was the father of Hashirama and Tobirama. He was known for being strict, quick to anger, and deeply hostile towards the Uchiha clan, fueling a dangerous feud between them. When he learned his son, Hashirama, was friends with Madara Uchiha, Butsuma plotted to ambush and kill Madara.
Although we never fully saw his abilities, his leadership role implies he was incredibly powerful. Many believed he was just as strong as Tajima Uchiha, a renowned user of the Sharingan.

Tajima Uchiha
Former Head of the Uchiha Clan
Tajima Uchiha was the father of Madara and Izuna Uchiha, and he had several other children who unfortunately died fighting the Senju clan. He was a highly skilled ninja who possessed the Sharingan, though the full extent of his abilities remains a mystery. In that era, it was rare for shinobi to live to adulthood, so those who did were generally considered exceptionally talented and strong. Some believe Tajima was as powerful as Butsuma Senju, the leader of the Senju clan.
Tobirama Senju
The Second Hokage
After his brother Hashirama passed away, Tobirama Senju became the Second Hokage. He shared Hashirama’s dream of a peaceful world where different clans would work together, but he also worried that the Uchiha clan could disrupt that peace. He and Hashirama began planning for a new way to organize things after losing their own brothers, Kawarama and Itama.
He found out about the secret meeting between Hashirama and Madara and told his father, who then set a trap for Madara. Unbeknownst to them, the Uchiha clan was also planning to ambush Hashirama. During the fight that followed, Tobirama killed Izuna. While Hashirama eventually convinced Madara to make peace, Izuna’s death permanently damaged their relationship.
Hashirama hoped Madara would share leadership as Hokage, but Tobirama persuaded him to let the village decide through a fair process. This resulted in Hashirama becoming the First Hokage, which unfortunately deepened the resentment within the Uchiha clan. As Hokage, Tobirama established important institutions like the Academy and the Chunin Exams. Although his practical approach helped strengthen the village, it sadly caused further tension with the Uchiha people.
Mito Uzumaki
The First Jinchuriki of Kurama
I’m absolutely fascinated by Mito Uzumaki! She was a member of the incredible Uzumaki clan and actually married Hashirama Senju – can you believe it? What’s even more amazing is that when Madara attacked Konoha with the Nine-Tailed Beast, Mito stepped up and sealed it inside herself! That made her Konoha’s very first Jinchuriki. We don’t know a ton about what she could do before that, but it’s clear sealing the Nine-Tails unlocked some seriously incredible power within her.
Reto, the First Kazekage
The Founder of Sunagakure
Reto, the founder of Sunagakure, was clearly a very powerful shinobi. He was strong enough to bring together the various desert clans and establish their village, though details about exactly how he fought are unknown.
A, the First Raikage
The Founder of Kumogakure
As the founder of Kumogakure and the first Raikage, he was clearly a powerful and skilled leader. However, because the story doesn’t spend much time on his village, not much is known about him personally.
Ishikawa, the First Tsuchikage
The Founder of Iwagakure
I’m fascinated by Ishikawa, the founder of Iwagakure in the Land of Earth! He was the very first Tsuchikage, which is incredible. It’s a shame we don’t know much about what he could do – like with a lot of the early Kage, details are scarce. Most of the historical records from that time are focused on Konoha, so we’re seeing things through their eyes. Still, we know he was a master of Earth Release, and I’m sure he was an immensely powerful shinobi!
