8 Forgotten Pokemon Evolutions Nobody Talks About Anymore

A core part of what makes Pokémon so beloved is its evolution system. Watching Pokémon grow and change into more powerful forms with new abilities is incredibly rewarding. Game Freak consistently creates unique and interesting designs for these evolved forms, which has been key to the franchise’s success.

Usually, a Pokémon becomes more popular after it evolves, but sometimes the earlier form is actually more well-loved. Unfortunately, many evolved Pokémon have been overlooked by fans – perhaps due to their appearance, how well they fight, or because a later generation introduced a stronger evolution. Here are eight of the most noticeable examples of this happening.

Quick Picks: Forgotten Pokemon Evolutions In 2026 (By Generation)

Don’t have much time? Here’s a quick look at some evolutionary forms that aren’t well-known today.

Generation Evolution Why?
Generation 1 Poliwrath The least iconic step in the evolutionary ladder.
Generation 2 Ursaring Overshadowed by its Gen 8 evolutions.
Generation 5 Bisharp Overshadowed by its Gen 9 evolution.

Poliwrath

Nowhere Near As Memorable As Poliwhirl Or Politoed

  • Introduced in: Generation One (Kanto)
  • Pokedex number: #0062
  • Types: Water/Fighting

Poliwag’s evolutionary family includes some of the most recognizable Pokémon, but Poliwrath often gets overlooked. While people tend to prefer the earlier stages, Poliwag and Poliwhirl, Poliwrath’s design doesn’t help it stand out. It’s less adorable than Poliwhirl and doesn’t have a dramatically different appearance from its previous form, which makes it easy to forget.

Honestly, things got really tough as a Poliwhirl fan when Generation Two came out. They introduced Politoed, which is just SO much cuter and really leans into the whole tadpole idea for this Pokémon line. Plus, Politoed can have this ability called Drizzle that made it super popular with competitive players. Poor Poliwrath just couldn’t compete – it wasn’t considered good enough, and honestly, Pokémon like Keldeo or Quaquaval just blew it out of the water.

Togetic

Not As Iconic As Togepi Nor As Powerful As Togekiss

  • Introduced in: Generation Two (Johto)
  • Pokedex number: # 0176
  • Types: Fairy/Flying

It’s easy to see why Togetic isn’t one of the more memorable Pokémon. Its pre-evolution, Togepi, is incredibly famous, largely because it appeared in the anime before the Generation Two games even came out. While Togetic is cute, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of adorableness as Togepi. It also didn’t have any significant appearances in the anime, and for a fully evolved Pokémon, it’s surprisingly underpowered.

Togetic gained another evolution in Generation Four, becoming Togekiss. Togekiss kept the charming look of the family but proved to be a strong fighter. Because of this, people usually talk about either Togepi or Togekiss when discussing this Pokémon line, and Togetic is often forgotten.

Ursaring

Its New Evolution Has Two Different Forms

  • Introduced in: Generation Two (Johto)
  • Pokedex number: #0217
  • Type: Normal

For more than twenty-three years, Ursaring was considered the final evolution of its Pokémon line and was well-known as the classic grizzly bear Pokémon – though it also had features of the Asian black bear. Because it was already large and powerful, fans didn’t anticipate it getting a new evolution, but surprisingly, that’s what happened in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

The recent Pokémon games featured Ursaluna, a huge, powerful bear Pokémon that quickly became a top choice for competitive online battles in Scarlet and Violet. The Teal Mask expansion added an even stronger version, Bloodmoon Ursaluna, which also proved incredibly popular with competitive players. As a result, Ursaring, the Pokémon Ursaluna evolves from, has largely been forgotten since 2022.

Dusknoir

Its Pre-Evolution Is Way More Useful In Battle

  • Introduced in: Generation Four (Sinnoh)
  • Pokedex number: #0477
  • Type: Ghost

Most Pokémon are often less popular than their evolved forms, but Dusknoir is unusual – it’s actually less popular than its pre-evolution. Dusknoir was introduced as the evolved form of Dusclops from Generation Three, but the introduction of the Eviolite item severely limited its usefulness in competitive battling.

Eviolite is an item that significantly increases a Pokémon’s Defense and Special Defense – but only if that Pokémon hasn’t fully evolved. Because Dusclops was already naturally very durable, combining it with the Eviolite and its evolution into Dusknoir created an incredibly tough defensive Pokémon that remains popular with competitive players. However, Dusknoir itself is better suited for attacking, with a good Attack stat, but it doesn’t offer much that makes it different from Dusclops or other physical Ghost-type Pokémon.

Bisharp

Its Generation Nine Evolution Is One Of The Most OP Pokemon Ever Made

  • Introduced in: Generation Five (Unova)
  • Pokedex number: #0625
  • Types: Dark/Steel

Like Ursaring, Bisharp was a fully evolved Pokémon for a long time before unexpectedly getting a new evolution in a recent game. Surprisingly, fans didn’t even ask for one! Scarlet and Violet introduced Kingambit, which is much more imposing than Bisharp and has become known as one of the strongest Pokémon ever, thanks to its powerful stats and unique ability, Supreme Overlord.

While Bisharp is still occasionally used in competitive battles thanks to the Eviolite item, it’s much less common and effective than Kingambit, which has clearly become the stronger choice. It makes you wonder if a similar situation could happen to another fully evolved Pokémon in Generation Ten when the Winds and Waves expansion releases in 2027.

Supreme Overlord increases its Attack and Special Attack in battle. The more party Pokémon that have already fainted, the bigger the boost it receives.

Flapple/Appletun

Dipplin And Hydrapple Make Better Use Of Their Unique Concept

  • Introduced in: Generation Eight (Galar)
  • Pokedex number: #0841 and #0842
  • Types: Grass/Dragon

When Sword and Shield was first released, Flapple and Appletun were quickly fan favorites among the new Pokémon from the Galar region. The idea of a dragon-like Pokémon trapped inside an apple was clever, and players loved their designs. Over time, Appletun became much more popular than Flapple, largely because of its cute apple pie inspiration, and Flapple gradually became less well-known.

Appletun faced a similar situation when the DLC for Scarlet and Violet added Dipplin, a new Pokémon in the Applin family based on a candied apple. Dipplin didn’t initially cause much excitement with The Teal Mask release, but that changed completely with The Indigo Disk, which introduced its final evolution, Hydrapple. This made Dipplin the only Pokémon in this line able to evolve beyond Appletun and Flapple. Hydrapple has a much more striking design that really captures the essence of the family, and it’s significantly stronger in battles than its earlier forms.

Wyrdeer

Stantler’s Long-Awaited Evolution Was Immediately Overshadowed By Farigiraf

  • Introduced in: Generation Eight (Hisui)
  • Pokedex number: #0899
  • Types: Normal/Psychic

For years, Pokémon fans asked Game Freak to create an evolution for Stantler, and that finally happened in Pokémon Legends: Arceus with the introduction of Wyrdeer. What made it even better was that Wyrdeer played a key role in the game as one of the Pokémon players could ride to travel quickly.

Wyrdeer quickly faded from popularity after the release of Scarlet and Violet. Several factors contributed to this, including the frustrating evolution process from Stantler, the fact that it’s only available through Pokemon Home transfers, and its weaknesses in battle due to its slow speed and limited moves. Ultimately, though, the introduction of Farigiraf – another evolution of a classic Pokemon (Girafarig) – really sealed Wyrdeer’s fate. Farigiraf had a more interesting design and proved to be much more effective in competitive play thanks to its stronger stats and abilities.

Oinkologne

Trying To Top Lechonk Was Always Going To Be An Impossible Task

  • Introduced in: Generation Nine (Pladea)
  • Pokedex number: #0916
  • Type: Normal

Just before the release of Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company introduced Lechonk, a Pokémon that instantly became popular online thanks to its cute appearance and memorable name. For months, fans shared memes and expressed their excitement about what Lechonk would evolve into. However, once the games were released, Lechonk’s final evolution, Oinkologne, didn’t resonate with players as much.

Lechonk quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its adorable, chubby design and its playful name. Unfortunately, its evolutions didn’t capture the same charm. While giving Oinkologne different appearances and stats based on gender was an interesting attempt, it wasn’t enough to make it memorable. Both male and female forms look quite ordinary compared to the unique Lechonk. Even almost four years after the release of Scarlet and Violet, people still fondly remember Lechonk, but Oinkologne remains one of the least popular Pokémon introduced in the Paldea region.
