Video games have come a long way, evolving from basic 2D games to immersive 3D open worlds. This shift has created a distinction between what players consider ‘retro’ and what they expect from today’s games. However, 2D games remain surprisingly popular, just as they were when they first appeared in arcades and on home consoles. While many gamers appreciate the realistic look of 3D games, others enjoy the nostalgic feel of 2D. The upcoming Steam game, Screenbound, aims to combine the strengths of both styles, and is being touted as the world’s first ‘5D’ game, offering a fresh take on video game visuals and gameplay.
Games like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog popularized classic 2D platformers. While 3D gaming has become dominant thanks to advances in technology, we still see 2D games released, often from independent developers. It’s unusual, however, to see 2D and 3D elements truly combined. Super Mario Odyssey is a good example of a major game featuring 2D sections within a 3D world, but those moments were short and not central to the gameplay. Screenbound takes a different approach, fully integrating both 2D and 3D styles to create a unique experience it calls ‘5D’.
Screenbound Trailer Showcases the World’s First 5D Game
Unveiled at the OTK Games Expo 2024, Screenbound is a unique game where you control a character in a 3D world who is also holding a 2D gamepad. Remarkably, everything you do with the gamepad in 2D is mirrored by your character’s actions in 3D. The game challenges you to solve puzzles that require you to think about both dimensions at once, using items and tools that affect one world from the other. Developers Crescent Moon Games and Radical Forge call this blend of 2D and 3D gameplay “5D,” and believe it could be a significant step forward in video game design. Like other difficult platformers, Screenbound demands precise movement and observation, forcing players to strategize across both the retro pixel art of 2D and the detailed 3D environments.

There haven’t been many updates about Screenbound since it was announced in 2024. However, with the recent popularity of platformer games like Astro Bot and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, there’s renewed hope that Screenbound will finally get a release date. Some fans believe the game’s innovative 5D mechanics might be taking longer to develop than expected, due to complicated coding, but this is just speculation. We still don’t know if development is on track or if the game has been delayed, as the development team hasn’t shared any official information.
It’s not unusual for game development to hit snags, and Screenbound is no exception. Even big-budget games like The Last Guardian and Diablo 3 faced years of uncertainty and worried fans. Considering Screenbound was revealed less than two years ago, its development progress isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. Players eager for updates can follow official announcements for news about the game’s status, including a possible release date, and other Steam releases.
