Epic Games Hit With Mass Layoffs

Epic Games, the company behind popular games like Fortnite and the Unreal Engine, is laying off over 1,000 employees today. This is the second significant round of layoffs at Epic Games in the past three years. The gaming industry has already seen several job cuts and studio closures early in 2024.

The recent layoffs at Epic Games are strikingly similar to those that happened in 2023, when the company cut 16% of its workforce – impacting hundreds of employees. Back then, CEO Tim Sweeney explained that the cuts were necessary because the company was spending more money than it was earning and needed to stabilize the business. Epic restructured, choosing to concentrate on key areas like Fortnite and Unreal Engine. The reasons given for these new cuts are almost exactly the same.

Epic Games Laid Off Over 1,000 People

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced layoffs to employees on March 24th in a message published on the company blog. He explained that over 1,000 people are losing their jobs because player engagement in Fortnite has decreased since 2025, and the company is currently spending more money than it’s earning. Sweeney stated these cuts are essential to secure the company’s financial future and ensure stability. He also noted broader challenges in the gaming industry, such as reduced consumer spending, fewer console sales compared to previous generations, and increased competition from other entertainment options.

Epic Games recently cut jobs, adding to a growing trend of studio closures and layoffs that have affected the gaming industry since the start of the year. According to Tim Sweeney, those affected will receive at least four months of severance, six months of paid health insurance in the US, and their stock options will vest faster, continuing through January of next year.

Games that rely on ongoing player spending – known as live-service games – are facing particular challenges, as keeping players engaged requires continuous updates, new content, and technical support, all of which are becoming more expensive.

AI tools are increasingly being used in game development, which raises questions about how quickly and creatively games can be made, and what this means for jobs in the industry. Limited availability of key computer components, like RAM, could also delay production and affect console sales. These challenges may be contributing to recent layoffs, as the gaming industry adapts to a more competitive and unpredictable future.
