A virtual reality game based on the hit show Breaking Bad was in development, but the project was eventually cancelled. Sony originally planned to release it as a first-party title for their first PlayStation VR headset. The game was being created by Firesprite, the studio behind the Horizon: Call of the Mountain VR game. Although it was never publicly revealed, details have emerged showing the developers aimed to create a truly immersive and intense experience for players.
Firesprite, the studio that started this now-canceled project, is known for creating engaging games for PlayStation, like the sci-fi game The Persistence. Back in the late 2010s, virtual reality was just beginning, and Sony was actively looking for well-known franchises to encourage people to try the new VR headsets. At the time, Breaking Bad was incredibly popular, with Better Call Saul and El Camino keeping fans engaged. Most VR developers weren’t trying to create huge, sprawling games; instead, they focused on shorter, more focused experiences that felt like interactive movies. These smaller projects were designed to highlight the visual capabilities of VR technology without the enormous cost and development time of a major, full-scale game.
Breaking Bad: The Canceled VR Experience
The canceled game wasn’t going to be a typical action or shooting game; instead, it was designed as a story-focused experience. Players would have relived key moments from Breaking Bad by stepping into the role of Walter White, experiencing the story from his point of view. According to reports, the game would have featured recognizable locations like the White family’s backyard and swimming pool – the scene of many dramatic events – and the New Mexico desert, where much of the show’s illegal activity took place. Players could even have stood beside the iconic RV, feeling the heat of the desert sun and immersed in the world of the show.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of the Breaking Bad universe, began working with Sony Interactive Entertainment around 2017 on a potential video game. He shared on his podcast, Inside the Gilliverse, that his team explored several ideas for different games, but found game development incredibly challenging – a single project can take years and cost millions. Despite significant effort, the virtual reality game they were developing never reached a point Gilligan felt was good enough. He didn’t want to compromise on quality, and ultimately, the project was cancelled because it wasn’t completed.
Firesprite, the studio behind several projects, has unfortunately had to abandon a number of games. This includes the recently canceled Breaking Bad project, as well as a battle royale game based on Twisted Metal, which was scrapped after layoffs. Concept art also surfaced revealing a secret sci-fi horror game developed between 2018 and 2020. This unreleased title, reportedly featuring intense body horror and environments similar to Dead Space, was a completely original idea—distinct from their game The Persistence—but never progressed beyond an early prototype.
Even with several projects cancelled, Firesprite is still working on new games using Unreal Engine 5. A rumored narrative horror game, codenamed “Project Heartbreak,” is widely believed to be a sequel to Until Dawn. Another game, “Project Pillar,” was mentioned in recent job postings, suggesting the studio remains busy. While fans hope for a full console game based on the Breaking Bad universe – specifically, exploring the Albuquerque underworld – the franchise has mainly focused on mobile strategy games and smaller collaborations. For now, the idea of experiencing that world through Walter White’s eyes in PlayStation VR remains an intriguing possibility.
