Chapter 232 of Chainsaw Man, titled “Thank You, Chainsaw Man,” marks the end of Tatsumi Fujimoto’s acclaimed manga series. After a prolonged battle between Denji and Yoru amidst global chaos, the story concludes not with a world-altering showdown, but with a touching sacrifice: a dog giving his life for a boy. Following his self-erasure in Chapter 231, Pochita appears to have sent Denji and the other characters back to the beginning of the first part of Chainsaw Man.
As a huge fan, it’s wild to think about what would’ve happened if Pochita hadn’t been there for Denji! Without that initial bond, his life takes a completely different turn – he reconnects with people he should know, but they’re strangers, and somehow he still ends up working for Public Safety as a Devil Hunter. Honestly, the ending of Chainsaw Man Part 2 felt a bit strange, rushed, and left me with some questions, especially with all the plot points that weren’t fully resolved. But digging deeper, I think the manga’s ending actually carries a lot more emotional and thematic depth than people give it credit for. It really stuck with me!
Pochita Erases Chainsaw Man’s Story & Resets the Timeline
In Chainsaw Man, Pochita was killed by a devil between chapters 230 and 231. Before his death, he revealed to Denji that he had been happier as his former self and chose to end his own life to prevent the existence of Chainsaw Man. This sacrifice effectively rewound the story to the beginning of Part 1, right before Denji’s fight with the Zombie Devil and his initial contract with Pochita.
Denji initially believes everything that’s occurred is a dream, leading him to battle the Zombie Devil – a scenario mirroring the beginning of Chainsaw Man. Surprisingly, chainsaws still exist even without the presence of Chainsaw Man, suggesting Pochita erased himself rather than the idea of chainsaws, contrary to popular fan theories. Instead of simply dying in the fight with the Zombie Devil as many expected, the changes caused by Pochita’s absence create a significantly different life for Denji compared to the first part of Chainsaw Man.
Denji Reunites With Power & Nayuta in a World Where Makima Never Existed
After his battle with the Zombie Devil, Denji isn’t rescued by Pochita, but by Power, who simply enjoys his dog-like scent. Power shares her blood with Denji, forming a contract that binds his life to her until her death. Soon after, the Control Devil arrives and, recognizing that Denji and Power defeated the Zombie Devil on their own, takes control of both of them.
It’s now confirmed that Nayuta, not Makima, is the Control Devil in Chainsaw Man. Back in Chapter 97, Denji completely destroyed Makima’s body, effectively erasing her existence and preventing her return. This explains why Nayuta is the Control Devil in Part 2. Even though the timeline was reset, Denji having consumed Makima in the previous timeline meant she never existed in this new one, allowing Nayuta to become the Control Devil from the start.
Because Makima is gone in Pochita’s new world, Aki never became a Public Safety Devil Hunter. He’s completely absent from chapter 232 of Chainsaw Man, and isn’t even mentioned. It’s unknown if the Gun Devil still attacked without Makima, but since she was the reason Aki joined Public Safety in the first place, he likely wouldn’t be with Denji and Power in this new timeline.
Denji Stops Asa From Killing Bucky & Becomes “Chainsaw Man” Again
At the beginning of Chainsaw Man Part 2, Asa unintentionally kills Bucky, which is a pivotal moment in her development. It’s later discovered that the Fire Devil manipulated this event, setting off a series of occurrences that ultimately lead to Yoru possessing Asa. In Chainsaw Man Chapter 232, Denji unexpectedly arrives at Asa’s school just as she’s about to kill Bucky, catching her when she falls and holding her tightly.
This minor adjustment prevents Asa from dying and merging with Yoru. Asa gratefully thanks Denji, unaware of how important his actions were, and he feels his heart race. She explains she nicknamed him “Chainsaw Man” because of his weapon, then returns to her friends. However, Denji’s reaction suggests his body somehow remembers what happened in the previous timeline, even if he doesn’t consciously realize it.
Pochita’s Heart is Still Inside Denji’s Body
One of the most impactful moments in Chainsaw Man Chapter 232 is seeing Pochita visualized as Denji’s heart when Asa expresses gratitude to “Chainsaw Man” for saving her. Despite Pochita altering the timeline, he remains connected to Denji, confirming that the events from the first 231 chapters were real and continue to shape this new reality. This is powerfully shown when Denji sacrifices his chainsaw to save Asa.
This scene demonstrates that Denji can be a hero even when he’s not transformed into Chainsaw Man, and that he’s finally prioritizing others instead of seeking the excitement or recognition that came with being Chainsaw Man. It’s a small moment, but it confirms Pochita’s decision to remove the Chainsaw Man identity, proving that Denji has truly grown since the start of the story. The series ends peacefully with Denji and Power simply going to get a meal together, with Denji content – as much as he ever will be.
