Okay, so we finally have a release date for Pokemon Champions – April 8th! And The Pokemon Company also showed off the Abilities for the Mega Evolutions of the starter Pokemon from Pokemon Legends: Z-A. It’s pretty cool because Mega Evolutions didn’t have Abilities in Legends: Z-A, so these are all brand new! Honestly though, while all three look amazing, one of the starter’s Mega Evolution Ability feels a little… underwhelming compared to the others. I was hoping for something a bit more exciting!
In competitive Pokemon battles, a Pokemon’s Ability is crucial for its success, often determining how well it performs against others depending on how it complements the Pokemon’s overall strengths. When a Pokemon Mega Evolves, it frequently gains a new Ability that can significantly increase its power, like Mega Kangaskhan with its incredibly strong Parental Bond, or Mega Blaziken’s Speed Boost. Pokemon Legends: Z-A recently added 45 new Mega Evolutions that haven’t received Abilities yet, leaving players to speculate about which ones will become top contenders in the Pokemon Champions competitive scene.
Mega Emboar Has a Far Worse Ability in Pokemon Champions Than the Other Legends: Z-A Starters
Many Pokemon Legends: Z-A players enjoy Mega Emboar, but it has the weakest Mega Evolution ability compared to the other starters in Pokemon Champions. When the abilities of the original Kalos starter Mega Evolutions were revealed – Bulletproof for Mega Chesnaught, Levitate for Mega Delphox, and Protean for Mega Greninja – they were all considered quite powerful. This led fans to expect similar strong abilities for the Legends: Z-A starter trio. Unfortunately, Mega Emboar’s ability isn’t as helpful as those given to Mega Meganium and Mega Feraligatr, making it stand out as the least effective of the three.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Starter Mega Evolution Abilities in Champions Explained
- Mega Meganium — Mega Sol: Allows the Pokemon use moves as if the weather were harsh sunlight.
- Mega Emboar — Mold Breaker: Effects of the opposing Pokemon’s Ability are ignored if possible.
- Mega Feraligatr — Dragonize: Normal-Type moves become Dragon-Type with a 20% damage boost.
Okay, so I’m super hyped about the new abilities coming in Pokemon Champions! Mega Meganium is getting Mega Sol, which is basically like permanent harsh sunlight for its moves. That means I can just fire off a Solar Beam right away without wasting a turn on Sunny Day – awesome! But honestly, Mega Feraligatr’s Dragonize might be even better. It turns all its Normal-type attacks into Dragon-type, so moves like Double-Edge and Giga Impact suddenly hit way harder with STAB damage. Seriously, that’s a game changer!
Mega Feraligatr’s Ability has a weakness: Normal-type attacks won’t affect Fairy-type Pokémon, as Fairy types are immune to Dragon-type moves.
Compared to other options, Mega Emboar’s Mold Breaker ability isn’t very impressive. It’s an ability that several other Mega Evolutions already have, and it isn’t particularly powerful in competitive battling. Mold Breaker allows a Pokemon to bypass certain opponent abilities – for example, letting an attack like Earthquake hit Pokemon that normally float safely. While it can be useful in specific situations, it doesn’t offer as much benefit as the abilities found on Mega Meganium and Mega Feraligatr.
Why Mega Emboar Won’t Be Worth Using in Pokemon Champions
In competitive Pokemon battles, teams are usually limited to just one Mega Evolution, so using that slot on Mega Emboar in Pokemon Champions probably isn’t a good strategy. Emboar’s regular Abilities, Blaze and Reckless, are actually more helpful than its Mega Ability, Mold Breaker. Blaze, common for Fire-type starters, simply powers up Fire-type moves when Emboar is low on health. Reckless boosts the power of recoil moves like Flare Blitz by 20%. Unlike Mold Breaker, these Abilities directly benefit Emboar itself, no matter what the opponent does.
Other Mega Evolutions with Mold Breaker
- Mega Gyarados
- Mega Ampharos
While a couple of Pokémon already Mega Evolve to gain the Mold Breaker ability, their success in competitive battles has been inconsistent. Mega Ampharos doesn’t become much more useful with Mold Breaker, as it wasn’t a strong competitor to begin with. Mega Gyarados, however, is a different story. Its original ability, Intimidate, lowers an opponent’s Attack when it enters battle, providing a useful advantage before Mega Evolving and gaining Mold Breaker. Plus, by trading its Flying type for Dark, Mega Gyarados removes its crippling weakness to Electric-type attacks, making it a reliable competitive choice.
Mega Meganium and Mega Feraligatr Could End Up Being Meta Threats in Pokemon Champions
Mega Evolution dramatically increases Meganium’s Special Attack, turning it into a powerful competitor. Its ability, Mega Sol, allows it to use Solar Beam instantly, without the usual charging turn. Mega Meganium can further enhance its damage output with moves like Work Up, which boosts Special Attack, or Ancient Power, which has a chance to raise multiple stats. Utilizing Grassy Terrain is also a good strategy, as it strengthens Grass-type attacks while it’s in effect.
Okay, so Mega Feraligatr is already a beast when it comes to physical attacks, but in Pokemon Champions, its Dragonize ability could make it seriously unstoppable. Not only does it have awesome Water and Dragon moves like Liquidation and Outrage, but even a move like Double-Edge gets a huge boost! Dragonize turns Normal-type moves into Dragon-type, which is amazing. Plus, Feraligatr can learn Dragon Dance, letting me boost its Attack and Speed and just completely sweep through opponents. It’s a really powerful combo!
