When a story’s main character is described as “overpowered” (or OP), it can be a turn-off. What’s the point of watching a story about someone who’s already unbeatable? Luckily, some anime with incredibly strong main characters still manage to be great. They do this by creating hilarious situations or throwing truly massive challenges at the hero, making viewers really want them to succeed.
If you’re short on time and want something exciting, many anime featuring incredibly powerful main characters start strong with captivating first episodes. Luckily, there’s a huge selection of these anime, so fans have plenty to watch for months to come.

What Makes An Anime Protagonist Overpowered?
Just because a character is incredibly strong doesn’t automatically make them ‘overpowered’ (OP). A character’s power level only matters in relation to their surroundings. A classic example is Goku from Dragon Ball. He’s unbelievably strong, even reaching god-like levels, and could outperform many characters considered OP. However, within his own story, Goku consistently faces enemies who are just as powerful, or even stronger. In fact, he isn’t even the strongest character in the Dragon Ball universe.
A truly overpowered (OP) protagonist isn’t just incredibly strong – the story needs to show that strength and everyone within it needs to recognize it. They might face opponents, but no one poses a real challenge. Whether they’re capable of anything or excel at just one thing, they essentially have no equals.
Why Are OP Anime MCs So Popular?
It’s a common question: why do so many anime heroes seem unbelievably strong? Why aren’t viewers tired of it? The answer is simple – people enjoy feeling powerful. While popular action anime often focus on a character’s journey and growth, shows with overpowered protagonists offer a shortcut. They skip the hard work and challenges, letting the audience immediately experience the fun of effortless victory and a worry-free adventure.
Ultimately, a lot of anime provides a way to escape from everyday life, and some stories take that idea to the extreme. These shows let you experience amazing things through a character who seems to succeed without much effort. Even their ordinary skills are celebrated, and they effortlessly attract romantic attention just by being themselves.
Best OP MC Anime Rankings
This list won’t include anime where the main character, while strong, has noticeable flaws or rivals who can challenge them. We’re focusing on shows that really highlight how incredibly powerful their lead is. For example, popular series like Dragon Ball, Naruto, and Rurouni Kenshin won’t be part of this selection.
We’ve left out Chinese animated series, but The Daily Life of the Immortal King is a great choice if you enjoy shows with incredibly powerful main characters. You can find it on Crunchyroll.
35. Clevatess
Clevatess
Unlike many overpowered anime protagonists, Cleavatess intentionally limits his own power when he appears as a human. He’s a terrifying demon who easily defeats a group of heroes sent to kill him, then destroys their castle as retaliation. The story quickly shifts when he unexpectedly becomes the guardian of a young royal child. Now, accompanied by a resurrected hero and a kindhearted milkmaid, Cleavatess journeys across the land, questioning whether humanity deserves to be saved.
Clevatess is a truly dark fantasy, set in a harsh and unforgiving world. The main character isn’t a hero; he’s focused on protecting his own monstrous race, and can be quite brutal and unpleasant. Though cruel, he does have a strange sense of justice. Overall, Clevatess is a fantastic show and highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy.
34. I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Season 2
Azusa
Stories where the main character is incredibly powerful usually focus on action, which makes sense. But this idea actually works really well for relaxing, slice-of-life stories too. Because the character is so strong, there’s no real danger, allowing them to simply enjoy a peaceful and free life.
I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is a relaxing and enjoyable anime. It’s a ‘slice of life’ story where the main character, Azusa, mostly hangs out and has fun with the girls she’s taken in. While there are occasional battles, like with a dragon, the show is generally lighthearted and focuses on creating a positive atmosphere.
33. Kaiju No. 8
Kafka Hibino
I debated whether to include Kaiju No. 8 on this list. While Kafka is powerful, it felt important to feature a series where he actually faces real challenges. The story takes place in a world constantly threatened by huge, powerful monsters, so it wouldn’t make sense for the main kaiju to be invincible.
Kafka is incredibly strong, rivaled only by the most powerful monsters, and only one of them gave him a real fight in the first season. Plus, the main character is still getting stronger as he learns to control his powers, meaning he’s not yet reached his full potential in the anime.
Ultimately, Kaiju No. 8 is a really fun action anime. Who doesn’t enjoy watching giant monsters destroy everything, and then get taken down themselves?
32. I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability
Lloyd Saloum
Anime featuring incredibly powerful children are actually quite uncommon, particularly when the focus is on action and consistently displaying those abilities. I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince stands out as a rare example, and it fully embraces the idea of a young boy easily defeating strong enemies. What really sets it apart is the show’s high production quality and skilled direction, allowing the main character, Lloyd, to showcase his power in impressive and visually stunning ways, often surpassing other anime with similar reincarnation themes.
The anime I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince is a funny and action-packed show. It combines exciting battles with comedic moments, often featuring villains who are shocked by the incredible magical abilities of the main character, a young child. Lloyd, born as the seventh prince, doesn’t have any royal duties, so he dedicates all his time to studying and mastering magic. In the very first episode, he defeats a strong demon so completely that the demon is left utterly defeated and helpless – and it’s really entertaining!
31. Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord
Yumiella Dolkness
Stories about villainesses transported to other worlds (often called “isekai”) have become increasingly popular, and that trend is expected to continue. This is because the genre first gained traction in light novels around 2015. While most of these stories feature capable main characters, they aren’t usually overwhelmingly powerful. However, Villainess Level 99 stands out – its protagonist, Yumiella, is exceptionally strong and easily dominates the world she’s been transported to.
Yumiella unexpectedly found herself as a secret, powerful enemy within a game, and her main goal was to stay out of trouble. But she also started training intensely, wanting to be ready to defend herself and the world if needed. She quickly became incredibly strong, so much so that she unintentionally frightened the game’s main character.
30. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
Hajime Nagumo
The anime Arifureta, based on a popular series of novels, had a rocky beginning. The first season received criticism for its rushed pace and missing story elements. However, the second season was better, and that improvement continued with the third part released in Fall 2024. Arifureta perfectly embodies the classic ‘weak to strong’ isekai formula. The story starts with the main character being abandoned by his classmates, but he quickly grows in power and becomes one of the strongest people in this new world – and it all happens fairly fast.
Even with its imperfections, the show features a really engaging main character in Hajime. He’s likable enough to make his large group of admirers believable, and he consistently shows intelligence and good judgment when dealing with political issues. Although he’s powerful and often easily defeats his opponents, Hajime uses his abilities in a smart and resourceful way.
29. Zenshu
Natsuko Hirose
I’ve been watching the Winter 2025 isekai anime, and the main character, Natsuko from Zenshu, is seriously overpowered. She can literally bring her drawings to life, and her imagination is incredible – she’s constantly thinking up beings powerful enough to wipe out entire armies. The story starts with Natsuko, a talented animator who’s hitting a creative wall, accidentally getting transported into the world of an old anime movie she loved as a child. Knowing the original story has a pretty grim ending, she’s determined to help the heroes and try to create a happier outcome. Luckily, she finds a magical pen that basically makes her a god!
The author, Zenshu, cleverly avoids making Natsuko overpowered. They’ve given her ability limitations – the pen controls when it can be used, and she needs to continually create new drawings – which keeps the story suspenseful and prevents her from effortlessly solving every problem.
28. Bofuri: I Don’t Want To Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense
Maple
Many anime series feature characters transported into video games, but Bofuri is different. It’s a fun, lighthearted story about a girl who accidentally breaks an online game and drives its creators crazy! Maple is new to virtual reality games, so she puts all her points into defense to avoid taking damage. Through a combination of luck and the developers overlooking a loophole, she becomes unbelievably powerful, able to withstand any attack and completely disrupting the game’s balance. Season two especially features a lot of exciting battles alongside the humor.
Since Bofuri is a lighthearted game with no real consequences, the action scenes prioritize fun over complex strategy. However, they’re still enjoyable because the characters are so endearing – and that extends beyond just Maple! The anime smartly surrounds her with skilled but flawed players, which adds a bit of tactical depth. Ultimately, though, the most exciting moments usually showcase Maple’s hilariously overpowered abilities.
27. Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious
Seiya Ryuuguuin
While many isekai stories feature incredibly powerful heroes, Seiya Ryuuguuin from Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered But Overly Cautious stands out for his extreme caution. Like other heroes summoned to another world, Seiya is called upon by a goddess (Ristarte) to defeat an evil Demon Lord and save the world (Gaeabrande). Though Seiya is far stronger than most heroes Ristarte has worked with, it’s his constant need to prepare for every possible scenario that really tests her patience.
Most stories about characters transported to another world (isekai) show their protagonists easily overcoming challenges with their immense power. However, in Cautious Hero, the main character, Seiya, is overpowered not by effortlessly defeating enemies, but by meticulously preparing for every situation. He’s already strong enough to handle most threats, but his extreme caution highlights a different kind of power – the ability to solve even the toughest problems with minimal effort. The show suggests that true power isn’t about flashy displays, but about thorough preparation.
26. Uncle From Another World
Yousuke Shibazaki (Ojisan)
This is a very different take on the popular isekai anime genre. Most isekai stories are pure power fantasies, letting viewers imagine themselves as incredibly powerful characters – becoming like gods, defeating enemies, and winning over others. They’re designed for complete escapism. This show breaks that mold with a protagonist who is often called an “orc,” spends years wandering alone, and remains completely unaware of any potential romantic attention.
I’m totally hooked on Uncle From Another World! It’s about this guy, Ojisan, who gets transported to another world, but it’s not exactly the power fantasy you’d expect. He’s got this amazing ability to talk to spirits and do magic, which is awesome, but everyone else just sees him as a terrifying monster! Seriously, people scream when he shows up. It’s hilarious and heartbreaking watching him try to navigate this new life when everyone is so scared of him. It really makes you wonder how he’ll ever feel good about himself, you know?
