To Your Eternity is a nearly flawless fantasy and adventure anime. It features a unique story created by the talented Yoshitoki Oima, and follows Fushi, a wonderfully engaging main character whose growth is both impactful and deeply emotional.
It’s easy to see why people love To Your Eternity, so it’s tough to find another anime that’s just as good. However, there are a few series that offer a similar, deeply moving exploration of life, death, and everything in between – and might even be a little bit better.
Vinland Saga
Many fans consider Vinland Saga a true anime masterpiece because of its realistic story, complex characters, and meaningful themes. It’s quite different from To Your Eternity, which takes place in a more fantastical and imaginative world. However, both shows feature compelling main characters – Thorfinn and Fushi – who change dramatically throughout the series, though their journeys are very different.
Both To Your Eternity and Vinland Saga are powerful stories, but they take very different approaches. To Your Eternity is a thoughtful and gentle coming-of-age tale centered around Fushi, while Vinland Saga throws Thorfinn into brutal and challenging circumstances that test his limits. Every choice Thorfinn makes has significant consequences, a weight Fushi doesn’t experience due to his immortality.
Unlike To Your Eternity, which unfolds through slower, independent stories, Vinland Saga moves at a quicker pace, resulting in a more connected narrative. This allows characters – even those with smaller roles – to develop naturally and effectively.
Violet Evergarden
Kyoto Animation’s Violet Evergarden is famous for its stunning animation, rivaling the best in the anime world. Each scene is like a work of art, with incredibly detailed visuals, beautiful backgrounds, and characters who express themselves clearly through their expressions, often without needing dialogue.
I’ve been watching both To Your Eternity and Violet Evergarden, and while To Your Eternity is visually impressive, I didn’t find it quite as breathtaking as Violet Evergarden. The art style in To Your Eternity felt a little more subdued and less detailed, though both shows are really strong when it comes to animation and overall presentation. It’s a noticeable difference, and gives Violet Evergarden a slight advantage in that area.
Beyond its beautiful animation, Violet Evergarden tells a touching story about human connection, exploring themes of love, loss, and emotional growth, similar to To Your Eternity. If you’re looking for an anime that’s visually breathtaking, Violet Evergarden is an excellent choice.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
What makes Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End so compelling is its unique approach to storytelling. The series begins after the hero defeats the Demon King, and follows Frieren as she embarks on a personal journey. Through her experiences, she’s constantly reminded of how precious time is, the impact of loss, the value of human relationships, and the importance of cherishing memories with those she cares about.
Instead of telling its story in a straightforward order, Frieren reveals the past through well-placed memories, making it a captivating watch. Unlike To Your Eternity, which has aired three seasons, Frieren has a lasting appeal. It’s not just thought-provoking; it also balances serious themes with humor, action, and occasional romantic moments.

Mushishi
Mushishi is a uniquely cozy anime – it doesn’t feel like a typical animated show. Each episode is like a self-contained story, similar to something you’d find in a book or a personal documentary, and this approach works surprisingly well for the series.
Similar to To Your Eternity, Mushishi unfolds at a deliberate pace. Trying to rush through it might actually detract from your enjoyment. It’s best to savor each episode and really absorb the story. Despite its slow pace, Mushishi is a worthwhile watch because of its captivating storytelling, which doesn’t depend on typical elements like comedy, action, thrills, or romance.
Mushishi is a relaxing and thought-provoking anime perfect for unwinding after work, leaving you feeling peaceful and inspired long after you’ve finished watching.
Made in Abyss
Like To Your Eternity, Made in Abyss is an anime you won’t want to miss. However, Made in Abyss truly stands out with its incredible world-building. The series constantly reveals a detailed and visually stunning world within the Abyss, filled with unique creatures and plants, and hiding dangers at every level for the characters Reg, Riko, and Nanachi.
Unlike some series like To Your Eternity which tell you about their world, Made in Abyss lets you explore its world gradually. Made in Abyss takes the time to show each layer of the Abyss, allowing you to understand it organically, while To Your Eternity presents a vast world but doesn’t give you enough time to truly grasp its complexities.
Made in Abyss feels more dangerous because the characters are genuinely at risk. Unlike some other adventure stories, Reg, Riko, Nanachi, and Fushi aren’t invincible; they can suffer lasting injuries or even die while exploring the Abyss. This makes their journey feel much more perilous.
Dororo
If you enjoyed the thought-provoking and emotionally powerful story of To Your Eternity, then Dororo is a great choice. Set during a chaotic period of Japanese history, it follows Hyakkimaru and Dororo as they travel the country, with Hyakkimaru seeking to reclaim the parts of his body that were stolen from him at birth.
Dororo is a truly compelling anime. It draws you into the captivating and often dark journey of Hyakkimaru and Dororo, keeping you invested from start to finish. You’ll quickly find yourself connecting with the characters and understanding their struggles and growth.
Compared to To Your Eternity, where the character Fushi mostly responds to what happens around him, Dororo features a more proactive storyline driven by the choices and actions of its main characters. The consequences feel bigger in Dororo as a result.
