Players have been reporting crashes with the recent release of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo has acknowledged the issue and says they’re working on a fix. The game originally came out for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005 and became available on the Nintendo Switch Online service on March 18, 2026. Nintendo has also confirmed that the prequel, Pokemon Colosseum, will be added to the service in the future.
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is a unique game in the Pokemon series, created by Genius Sonority. Players take on the role of Michael, a young boy in the Orre region, who must rescue and purify Pokemon that have been corrupted into “Shadow Pokemon” by the villainous Team Cipher. Similar to Pokemon Colosseum, battles are primarily fought with two Pokemon on each side, and you mainly catch Pokemon by using a special device called the “Snag Machine” to take Shadow Pokemon from other trainers.
Nintendo Responds to Crash Reports in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Players are experiencing crashes and losing save data in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness. A bug can delete the entire save file if the game unexpectedly closes, even after saving in-game. Nintendo has acknowledged the problem after reports from the community, including one on Reddit by Amiibofan101, and is looking into it. While a fix is in progress, Nintendo recommends using the “Quick Save” feature in the pause menu to help prevent data loss and asks for patience.

The story in Pokemon XD takes about 30 hours to complete, so losing a significant amount of progress due to crashes or, even worse, save data being deleted, has been frustrating for players. It’s particularly surprising to see this issue in a game that didn’t have it originally and was published by Nintendo. While Pokemon games often have glitches, this one is especially problematic. Hopefully, the developers can find and fix any similar problems in Colosseum before it’s re-released as a Nintendo Classic.
When Pokemon XD was originally released, reviews were mixed, with many pointing out that it borrowed heavily from Colosseum and felt slow-paced. However, it remains a beloved game for many Pokemon fans, and its recent re-release offered a chance for new players to experience it. Both Pokemon XD and Colosseum were the first console games in the series to truly recreate the feeling of a classic Pokemon handheld adventure, emphasizing story progression over simple battling. Players are currently experiencing an issue with the game, and hope it’s fixed soon, especially for future re-releases. For now, it might be best to hold off on playing Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.
