They both started in Pallet Town and looked somewhat alike, but that’s where their paths diverged. Ash is so much more vibrant and relatable – his upbeat personality and occasional sass really connected with anime viewers. Plus, his journey began in a totally different way than ours in the games! While we got to pick from Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle, Ash had a bit of a surprise when it came to his first Pokémon.
Ash ended up with Pikachu as his first Pokémon because he overslept and missed the chance to choose from the initial three options. However, the real reason for this choice was to create a neutral starting Pokémon that wouldn’t favor any particular one in the video games. This decision proved incredibly successful – Pikachu became incredibly popular in the anime and went on to become the face of the entire Pokémon franchise for many years. Despite a difficult beginning, Ash and Pikachu developed a strong bond that became central to the series for over two decades.

It was a touching and satisfying finale, giving fans a final glimpse of their journey before a new group of characters took over the show.
So What’s Going on With Pokemon Now?
Even though Ash and Pikachu’s journey concluded, the Pokémon anime didn’t stop there. The show continued with a completely new group of characters and exciting stories, appealing to both longtime viewers and a new generation of fans.
The new series, Pokemon Horizons, follows Liko and Roy as they journey to find the legendary Six Heroes and uncover the secrets of a mysterious Pokemon named Terapagos. They team up with a group of fellow trainers called the Rising Volt Tacklers and travel the world aboard the airship Brave Olivine, accompanied by Professor Friede and his partner, Captain Pikachu.
