7 Anime Villains Better Than Pain, Ranked

As a huge Naruto fan, I always thought Pain was an amazing villain – seriously, one of the best written in the whole series! He wasn’t just some power-hungry bad guy; as the leader of the Akatsuki, he actually had a really compelling reason for everything he did, which made him so much more interesting. He drove what I consider one of the greatest arcs in all of shonen, hands down. But, and this is just my opinion, while he’s fantastic, I don’t think he’s the best anime villain ever. There are plenty of other villains, both from older anime and newer ones, who I think are even more complex and well-developed in a lot of ways.

Frieza

Anime: Dragon Ball Z

When it comes to pure villainy, few anime characters compare to Frieza from Dragon Ball. Although later installments sometimes played his evil for laughs, in the original Dragon Ball, Frieza was a truly terrifying force – he killed simply for enjoyment and spread destruction everywhere. He’s also inspired countless other iconic anime villains, which solidifies his status as a more impactful villain than characters like Pain.

Frieza initially seemed like an unbeatable villain, and his shocking killings of key characters stunned both Goku and the audience. He also triggered one of the most memorable transformations in shonen anime history, a moment that greatly influenced the genre. Because of all this, Frieza is a much more impactful and compelling villain than Pain.

Ryomen Sukuna

Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen

Ryomen Sukuna is the primary villain in Jujutsu Kaisen, and he’s a thrilling opponent for the heroes. Unlike Pain, who had understandable motivations for causing destruction, Sukuna destroys things purely for his own amusement. As the King of Curses, he’s almost unbeatable in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, with Gojo Satoru being the only one who can potentially challenge him.

Sukuna is a more terrifying and destructive villain than Pain. Unlike Pain, who becomes less significant as the story progresses, Sukuna is the central antagonist throughout his series. Furthermore, Sukuna directly causes the deaths of many important characters, leaving a lasting sense of despair for the heroes – something Pain doesn’t achieve to the same extent.

Meruem

Anime: Hunter x Hunter

Few villains are as complex as Meruem from Hunter x Hunter. Throughout the Chimera Ant Arc, this character developed significantly, changing from a purely destructive force into something more relatable and human.

Yoshihiro Togashi crafted Meruem as an incredibly powerful being capable of destroying humankind, yet simultaneously imbued him with increasingly human qualities. While Pain is often considered a compelling villain, Meruem surpasses him in complexity and depth.

Dio Brando

Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Dio, from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, is another villain whose personality is all about charm and wickedness. He starts as a chaotic character, and though he becomes more complex as the story unfolds, he remains fundamentally evil. Unlike Pain, who wants to improve the world, Dio is motivated purely by his own desire to create chaos. This makes him a fascinating and formidable opponent for the heroes, whether it’s Jonathan Joestar, whom he torments relentlessly, or Jotaro. Dio consistently disrupts their lives, proving himself to be a truly effective villain.

Dio is incredibly important to the entire story of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. The series wouldn’t work without him, as almost all of the major characters – both good and bad – are significantly affected by his actions and presence. This impact on the story is what makes him a more compelling character than Pain.

Madara Uchiha

Anime: Naruto

As a huge Naruto fan, everyone talks about Pain being an amazing villain, and he definitely is! But for me, Madara Uchiha is on a whole other level. He is the embodiment of fear and chaos in the series. It’s fascinating because, like Pain, he actually wanted peace, just his methods were… extreme, to say the least. And honestly, the sheer amount of dread everyone felt around Madara? It was way more intense than with any other character.

Even just hearing the name Madara could spark a global war. He was incredibly powerful, single-handedly defeating anyone who opposed him and truly embodied strength in the series – far surpassing Pain in terms of raw power. While his story didn’t end as effectively as Pain’s, Madara remains the most impressive villain throughout all of Naruto.

Kaido

Anime: One Piece

In the world of One Piece, Kaido is the ultimate representation of strength. As one of the Four Emperors, he ruled the Wano Country for 20 years with brutal force. He destroyed the noble families and broke the spirit of the samurai, crushing any opposition and demonstrating true cruelty.

Kaido dreamed of building a pirate nation strong enough to challenge and ultimately overthrow the World Government. He envisioned a world based purely on strength and equality, and relentlessly worked to dismantle the existing world order and usher in a new age. He’s a truly compelling villain, largely due to his ideals, and many consider him even more impactful than Pain.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Anime: One Piece

The anime One Piece features many memorable villains, and Donquixote Doflamingo is one of the most compelling. Born into a privileged family as a Celestial Dragon, Doflamingo believes he’s better than everyone else. He’s a charming but truly evil character, making him a thrilling antagonist. Unlike some villains who have noble goals, Doflamingo is purely selfish, driven only by his own desires and a desire to destroy the society that cast him out.

Doflamingo’s upbringing as a Celestial Dragon ultimately led to his downfall. While already predisposed to evil by his background, he surpassed even other Celestial Dragons in cruelty. Over time, he committed horrific acts – including slavery, the destruction of nations, and tearing families apart – even engaging in human trafficking and erasing people from history. Driven by a desire to become the ruler of the world, Doflamingo’s ambition and the immense suffering he inflicted make him a particularly captivating villain, arguably surpassing Pain in impact and complexity.

Johann Liebert

Anime: Monster

Johann Liebert is a villain in the anime series Monster who doesn’t rely on superpowers, and that’s a big part of why fans find him so compelling. He’s pure chaos, and his very presence leads to death and destruction. Throughout the series, Johann is responsible for numerous deaths, each one highlighting just how dangerous he is.

If left unchecked, Johann could destroy everything, and the frightening part is he can do so without needing any special abilities – sometimes just by existing. He’s a far more compelling writer than Pain, and easily ranks among the greatest villains in anime history, potentially even the best.
