Pokemon: 7 Strongest Grass-types in Kanto

Grass-type Pokémon are frequently suggested as the best choice for new Trainers by Pokémon Professors. This is largely because Bulbasaur was one of the first Pokémon available, and several other Grass-types, like Oddish and Tangela, were among the original 151 Pokémon discovered. They’re often seen as a calm and reliable option for beginners.

These Pokémon are generally quite relaxed, but that doesn’t mean they’re weak! Grass-type Pokémon are known for using moves that can inflict conditions like paralysis or poison during battles. Over time, some have become even more powerful with the help of Mega Evolution.

Parasect Is Technically a Zombie

The Mushroom on Its Back Controls the Pokémon

Players of Pokémon Legends: Arceus will remember the wild Paras of the Hisui region as energetic and protective of their territory, but today’s Paras are much more shy. Paras have a sad existence, constantly hungry because the mushrooms growing on their back take most of their nourishment. When a Paras evolves into Parasect, those mushrooms combine into one large mushroom, and the Pokémon’s eyes turn a ghostly white. The Pokédex in Pokémon Ultra Sun reveals a grim truth: Parasect is barely alive, kept in a minimal state of existence and controlled by the mushroom itself.

The anime shows that the mushroom on a Parasect’s back can be used to make powerful medicine. Ash’s friend, Cassandra, wanted her shy Paras to evolve into a Parasect, but it was very weak and easily defeated. When Team Rocket tried to exploit Paras by setting up fake battles to boost its confidence, their plan unexpectedly helped Paras become stronger. This newfound confidence allowed Paras to cleverly defeat Ash’s Charmeleon using its claws, causing it to evolve into a Parasect. Charmeleon, upset by this loss, attacked, but Parasect put it to sleep with its Spore attack.

Vileplume’s Stun Spore Attack Is No Joke

The Original Evolved Form of Oddish and Gloom

I’ve always found the evolution of Gloom, the Weed Pokémon, fascinating. It can become either Vileplume or Bellossom, and it all depends on which evolutionary stone its trainer chooses. Back in the early days of Pokémon, before Generation II, Gloom only had one option: Vileplume, and you needed a Leaf Stone to get it there. Vileplume is known for having the biggest petals of any Pokémon that looks like a flower, but don’t let that beauty fool you! Its flower is actually quite poisonous. It releases a fine dust from its petals that can cause allergic reactions and even make you sick if you get too close.

Vileplume has made a few appearances, including at Erika’s Gym and with Jessebelle, but it played a significant part in an Orange Islands adventure called “The Stun Spore Detour.” During this episode, Ash, Tracey, and even Jessie from Team Rocket were paralyzed by a Vileplume’s Stun Spore. Misty discovered a rare plant, Salveyo weed, which could cure them, but she ended up competing with James and Meowth to find it. In the end, everyone got the medicine they needed, though the experience left them even more wary of this powerful Pokémon.

Kantonian Exeggutor Have Dangerous Hypnotic Abilities

In Alola, Exeggutor Are of the Dragon-type Instead

Exeggcute is a peculiar Grass and Psychic-type Pokémon often found in tall grass throughout the Kanto region and other areas. It’s made up of six egg-like creatures that are mysteriously linked and work together in battle. The Pokédex notes that Exeggcute is nearing evolution when cracks start to appear on its eggshells, but it actually evolves only when exposed to a Leaf Stone.

Exeggutor’s type differs depending on where it evolved. Those from the Alola region become Grass/Dragon-type, while the original Kantonian Exeggutor remains a Grass/Psychic-type. Often called “The Walking Jungle,” Exeggutor has multiple coconut-like heads, each with its own intelligence. These heads can combine their power through telepathy, as demonstrated in the anime. One episode, “The March of the Exeggutor Squad,” shows how dangerous Exeggutor’s Hypnosis move can be when a large group hypnotizes each other, almost causing widespread destruction. While the situation is eventually resolved, Ash then faces a different challenge: his newly evolved Charmeleon, who is disobedient and refuses to follow his commands.

Shauna Has an Ivysaur as Her Partner Pokémon

Ivysaur Has Participated in Battles as Well as Contests

Shauna is a cheerful and lively adventurer, just like her character in the game, and she has a fondness for all things adorable. While she’s willing to battle, she’s primarily a Pokémon Performer. Originally from Vaniville Town with her friends Tierno, a dancer, and Trevor, a photographer, Shauna has journeyed across the Kalos region, competing in Pokémon Contests with the dream of becoming Kalos Queen.

Shauna’s Bulbasaur has grown into Ivysaur, and it’s become a key part of her Pokémon Contest team, alongside her Flabébé. Ivysaur used to be shy, but now loves performing just as much as Shauna does. It helps Shauna and her friend Serena in battles, and its moves like Solar Beam and Petal Dance are a big hit with audiences during contests. While many of Shauna’s Pokémon are still developing, Ivysaur is a reliable and talented performer.

Victreebel Became a Key Part of James’ Team

The Flycatcher Pokémon Recently Gained a Mega Evolution

Victreebel is the fully evolved form of Bellsprout and is a powerful Pokémon known for its dangerous abilities. It lives in large groups within dense jungles, and those who encounter these groups are rarely seen again. Victreebel uses vines and a sweet, honey-like scent to attract unsuspecting prey, which it then dissolves with a toxic fluid in its mouth. The more prey it digests, the stronger the scent becomes, allowing it to lure in even more Pokémon.

James didn’t use Victreebel much when Team Rocket first arrived in Kanto, but that changed when they reached the Orange Islands. By the time they got to Johto, Victreebel had become one of James’ go-to Pokémon in battle, easily using strong attacks like Razor Leaf and Vine Whip thanks to its speed and strength. Though Victreebel eventually left to be with another Victreebel, it remains one of James’ most memorable early Pokémon due to its power and loving nature. Recently, Victreebel gained a Mega Evolution, becoming the incredibly powerful Mega Victreebel, but it hasn’t appeared in the anime yet.

Ash’s Bulbasaur Is Very Strong Despite Not Evolving

A Grass/Poison-Type With a Strong Sense of Justice

Ash started his Pokémon journey with all three original Kanto starters – Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle – but only Charizard fully evolved. Similar to Pikachu, Bulbasaur and Squirtle preferred to stay as they were. Some fans think Charizard’s fierce personality discouraged them from evolving. We even see Bulbasaur become scared of evolving after an encounter with a vision of Venusaur. Despite this, Bulbasaur remains a courageous and responsible Pokémon, always ready to help those in need.

Bulbasaur was raised in a special village where Pokémon left by their trainers could find safety. Seeing how frightened the other Pokémon were from past mistreatment, Bulbasaur didn’t trust trainers at first. But after meeting Ash, Bulbasaur realized not all trainers were bad and happily joined his team. Since then, Bulbasaur has been a strong and dependable friend, potentially as powerful as its evolved forms. It knows powerful moves like Solar Beam and Vine Whip, and surprisingly, it can even use Dig – a move that Bulbasaur normally can’t learn in the Pokémon games.

Venusaur Is Famous for Its Solar Beam

Many Trainers Have Used Venusaur Since Its Debut

Venusaur is a special Pokémon – it was the very first Grass-type starter to fully evolve, and it’s featured on the cover of both Pokémon Green Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, which is now available on Nintendo Switch. Despite being a powerful Pokémon, Venusaur is generally peaceful and prefers to avoid conflict, but it will defend itself if provoked. In battle, it uses its strong vines to deliver powerful Vine Whip attacks and is well-known for its Solar Beam, which it charges using the flower on its back. Outside of battle, Venusaur functions much like a plant, using photosynthesis to gain nutrients. Interestingly, Venusaur is known to care for groups of Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, even helping them evolve through special ceremonies where it can influence the weather.

While Ash and Shauna’s Pokémon haven’t evolved much, the most impressive Venusaur in the anime belongs to May, a skilled Pokémon Trainer and Coordinator. When May returned for the Wallace Cup competition, it was revealed that her Bulbasaur had fully evolved into a powerful Venusaur, becoming a valuable member of her team. Thanks to its strength and type advantages, May’s Venusaur easily defeated a Marill in battle. Though May’s Venusaur hasn’t demonstrated this ability, Venusaur can typically Gigantamax and Mega Evolve – and one example proved to be a strong opponent against Alain’s Mega Charizard X during the special episodes about Mega Evolution.
