The Resident Evil series is known for its over-the-top, campy horror – and that’s a big part of what makes it so popular. Like a classic horror movie franchise, it delivers a dramatic and constantly changing story with memorable characters. But it’s the over-the-top, often shocking, ways those characters meet their end that Resident Evil truly enjoys showcasing.
Major spoilers ahead for several Resident Evil games.
Generally, deaths in the Resident Evil series fall into two main types. Some deaths happen during story cutscenes and are considered official parts of the narrative, while others occur during actual gameplay. These two types of deaths serve different purposes: the story deaths focus on creating emotional impact or shocking the player, and the gameplay deaths tend to be more about graphic violence and over-the-top situations. Therefore, when looking at the most intense death scenes in RE history, it’s helpful to consider these two categories separately.
For the sake of variety, I’ve limited the below to include only one death per game.
The Most Brutal Canon Deaths in Resident Evil
Shovelhead – Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7 makes you feel much more exposed and helpless, largely because of the shift in who you play as. This is really noticeable when you encounter another character who seems like an ally. After exploring the Baker family’s garage, players might feel a sense of relief upon seeing Deputy David Anderson, a police officer who appears to be a helpful figure. However, that relief quickly turns to horror when Jack Baker suddenly attacks, brutally killing Anderson with a shovel in a single, shocking blow.

Eat Your Heart Out – Resident Evil Village
Ethan has a relentlessly difficult time in Resident Evil Village, and things get much worse when he meets Mother Miranda. After briefly appearing as Mia to torment him, Miranda brutally attacks Ethan, reaching into his chest to tear out his heart and drink its blood. What makes this even more unsettling is that Ethan can’t actually die because of a fungal infection – he’s forced to experience this horrifying and baffling event while fully conscious.
He’s Coming for Us, You’ll See – Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
In my opinion, Nemesis is a much more frightening villain than Mr. X, largely because of how he’s first presented in the original Resident Evil 3. The game begins with Jill Valentine and Brad Vickers nearing the Raccoon City Police Department when Nemesis suddenly attacks, impaling Brad with a tentacle while Brad begs Jill for help. The scene is especially impactful because Brad had previously encountered Nemesis and seemed to know he was going to die. However, the Resident Evil 3 remake changed this, having Brad killed by a generic zombie and then finished off by Marvin Branaugh. This change makes Nemesis feel significantly less intimidating.
The Most Brutal Non-Canon Resident Evil Deaths
No-face-stador – Resident Evil 4
The new Resident Evil 4 remake definitely has its share of gruesome deaths, but it significantly tones down one of the most shocking moments from the original game. In the classic RE4, if you failed a quicktime event during the fight with a Novistador, Leon’s face would be melted by acid. Even with the older graphics from 2004, it was a really disturbing scene.
Sliced Ada – Resident Evil 4 Remake: Separate Ways DLC
As a huge fan of the original Resident Evil movie, I was genuinely shocked by something in the Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways remake. When you’re running Ada Wong through the laser grid – you know, that classic scene – if you mess up the quicktime event, it’s… brutal. You don’t actually see everything, but the game shows Ada’s face right before the Game Over screen, and honestly, the look of sadness and emptiness is terrifying. It really drives home how bad things are for her!
Big, Happy Family – Resident Evil 6
The combination of sexual themes and violence is often disturbing, and it’s a common element in art and storytelling. The game Resident Evil 6 explores this unsettling connection with a creature called the Rasklapanje, which attacks by forcibly inserting a part of itself into a player’s mouth. This allows the creature to reproduce, with its offspring violently bursting out of the victim’s chest – a gruesome scene reminiscent of the movie Alien. It’s definitely not a pleasant way to meet your end.
