Nintendo Confirms The Nintendo Switch 2 Will be Backwards Compatible

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Nintendo‘s announcement about the Nintendo Switch 2 brings a sense of nostalgia and excitement. The promise of backward compatibility is truly music to our ears. However, as someone who still has a pile of physical cartridges from my old Nintendo days, I hope they also consider making it compatible with those.

Nintendo has announced that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 model will allow users to play their existing Nintendo Switch games, as it will support backward compatibility.

In simpler terms, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed on his platform (previously Twitter) that software for the Nintendo Switch can also be played on the upcoming version of the Nintendo Switch. He also mentioned that the online service for Nintendo Switch, called Nintendo Switch Online, will also be available on this new system. More details about the new Nintendo Switch, including its ability to play games from the current one, will be shared at a later time.

According to Furuwaka’s statement, it is certain that their games can be played on older systems digitally. However, they haven’t given any information about whether the backward compatibility will extend to Nintendo Switch cartridges at this time.

As of now, Nintendo has officially declared that they will reveal details about the Nintendo Switch 2 before April 2025, and experts speculate that the console could hit the market as early as mid-2025. However, it’s important to note that Nintendo has only definitively stated that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at some point after April 2025.

Previously this year, draft designs for the Nintendo Switch 2 became publicly available, revealing details about its upcoming features such as 12GB of RAM, compatibility with HDMI 2.1, and an internal storage capacity of 256GB. More recent whispers suggest that it may offer backward compatibility and support 4K resolution.
