Baldur's Gate 3 Developer's Next Project Leaks

Key Takeaways

  • A current-gen console version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition leaked online via an age rating.
  • While the 2018 game never received a dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version, it’s already playable on current-gen consoles thanks to their backward compatibility.
  • Larian is currently also working on two other projects, which it recently said will be based on original IPs.

As a long-time fan of Larian Studios and their masterful creations, particularly the Divinity series, this latest news has me both excited and puzzled. On one hand, I’m thrilled at the prospect of experiencing Divinity: Original Sin 2 on my current-gen console, especially since it seems Larian is finally giving in to the demands of their dedicated fanbase. However, I can’t help but feel a tad confused as well. After all, isn’t Larian supposed to be working on two new original IPs?

Based on recently uncovered data, it’s possible that Larian Studios could be working on a modern console adaptation of Divinity: Original Sin 2. This potential remake might take enthusiasts by shock, as many believed that Larian had been exclusively engaged in other endeavors up until this point.

In April 2024, developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 unveiled that they had initiated work on two fresh games using unique concepts. At that point, both projects were in their initial stages, and the studio hinted at revealing further details when there is something tangible to present.

It appears that Larian Studios may be working on another project as well, since Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition has recently been given a new PEGI rating. The updated classification, first noticed by Gematsu, was published on November 6, and its main difference from the game’s previous rating is the inclusion of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Although these consoles can already run the last-generation versions of the RPG due to backward compatibility, neither has yet received a dedicated version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 for these newer platforms.

It’s plausible that the PEGI database lists the PC version of the game due to the combined rating with the previous one. After all, “Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition” debuted on PC in August 2018, followed by its releases on PlayStation and Xbox. The enhanced RPG edition was a free upgrade for owners of the original PC release, which had been available since August 2017.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Re-Release Seems Like a Safe Play for Larian Right Now

By soaring to new heights with Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios has gained significant recognition. Re-launching Divinity: Original Sin 2 for current-generation systems could potentially introduce it to a vast, untapped audience, given the studio’s brand is at an all-time peak. This rumored re-release thus appears to be a strategic move with relatively low risk and high potential rewards for the Belgian developers. As for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, we are curious about what enhancements Larian might introduce on these platforms. For context, the previous generation consoles already support 4K resolution, with the Xbox One X offering native 4K, while the PS4 Pro upscales the RPG to a checkerboard 4K resolution. However, both systems run Divinity: Original Sin 2 at 30 frames per second.

Divinity: Original Sin 3 Is Still on the Cards

Regardless of the situation, it’s clear that the rumored re-release won’t mark the end of the RPG series. This information comes from Larian CEO Swen Vincke, who has confirmed that a third game in the Divinity series is definitely planned for the future.
