New Virtua Fighter Game Confirmed To Be In Development

As a gamer who’s been around since the days of arcade cabins and floppy disks, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I hear about the return of a classic franchise like Virtua Fighter. I remember the thrill of those first fights back in 1993, the sweat on my palms as I tried to master Akira Yuki’s moves, and the satisfaction of landing a perfect Virtua Kick.

Four years after the last installment in the Virtua Fighter game series, specifically Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, it has been confirmed that Sega is currently developing a brand-new Virtua Fighter game.

There’s A New Virtua Fighter Game On The Way

The new addition was confirmed in an interview with SEGA’s Global Head of Transmedia, Justin Scarpone. The executive just casually mentioned, “So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”

Regrettably, I haven’t received any concrete details yet – no release date, no title, and no platform specified for the upcoming addition to our beloved franchise. Yet, the mere fact that a new installment is on its way has us, the dedicated fans, brimming with excitement! Fingers crossed for some official updates and announcements in 2025.

Although Tekken may be more well-known than Virtua Fighter today, it’s worth noting that Virtua Fighter was the pioneer of the fighting game genre when it debuted in 1993. Since then, various sequels and spin-offs have been produced, with the most recent being “Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown,” which came out on PS4 and arcades in 2021.

In terms of my past experience, I’d describe it as having a greater emphasis on technical combat compared to the Tekken series from Bandai Namco. Yet, it seems to lack the same level of excitement and flair, which might be part of the reason why it doesn’t garner as much popularity as Tekken does.

Referring to its recent launch, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is a robust fighting game. As highlighted in our appraisal, “Virtua Fighter boasts one of the most devoted fanbases among all fighters, which means you can trust that this game will continue to be played by numerous enthusiasts long after its debut. Fighting enthusiasts will surely be eager to pool their spare change for this edition.
