Today, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can start playing Nova Roma. This vibrant indie game is just the third day-one release added to the service this month, and it’s the last new game expected on Xbox Game Pass until mid-April 2026.
Nova Roma, the second game from developer Lion Shield, lets you build a new Roman city after the empire has fallen. The goal is to recreate the best aspects of ancient Rome’s power and prestige. Originally planned for early access release on January 22, 2026, the launch was pushed back a few weeks. Lion Shield used the extra time to refine the game based on feedback from players who tried the demo, which has been available since early December.
Nova Roma Joins Two Xbox Game Pass Tiers
The city-building game Nova Roma became available on March 26th in the afternoon (Eastern Time). Currently, it’s only playable on PC for those with a PC Game Pass or Ultimate Game Pass subscription, like many games released in early access on Xbox Game Pass. According to the game’s Steam FAQ, the developers plan for Nova Roma to be in early access for about a year. As of now, there’s no official word on whether it will eventually be released on Xbox Series X/S consoles.

In terms of gameplay, Nova Roma builds upon the familiar city-builder experience, but with a strong Roman flavor. What sets it apart is its system of gods – temples, requests, and divine favor all play a role in how your city grows. You’ll also find historically accurate structures like aqueducts and buildings with multiple uses, plus a simplified way to manage workers and plan your city. Its art style and focus on being easy to play are similar to Lion Shield’s Kingdoms and Castles, a well-regarded modern city builder known for its lack of complicated controls.
This month, Microsoft is adding one last game to its subscription service: Nova Roma. But that’s not all – two more titles are coming to Xbox Game Pass before March 2026 ends. The Long Dark will be available starting March 30th, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will join on the 31st. Resident Evil 7 arrives just as Mad Streets and Peppa Pig: World Adventures are removed from the service on the last day of the month.

On April 2nd, Xbox Game Pass will add Barbie Horse Trails, available on all subscription tiers. Final Fantasy 4 will be released on April 7th, and we expect to hear the full list of games coming next month on the same day.
