GKIDS is bringing a new anime film, Labyrinth, to North American theaters this May, created by the studio Sanzigen (known for their work on Promare with Studio Trigger). While sharing a name with the 1986 Jim Henson movie, this Labyrinth is a completely separate project. After premiering in Scotland in late 2025 and releasing in Japan in January 2026, it will have limited screenings in American cinemas for two nights only.
The upcoming film Labyrinth is particularly exciting because it’s directed by Shōji Kawamori, a highly respected creator best known for designing mecha. This marks his first time directing an anime movie. Kawamori created the popular series Macross, adapted The Vision of Escaflowne, and even contributed to the original designs for Optimus Prime in Transformers. His unique style, which combines catchy music, science fiction, and giant robots, is already evident in the US trailer released by GKIDS Films.
Labyrinth Will Play in North American Theaters For Two Nights Only
The animated film Labyrinth will be shown in U.S. cinemas on May 10th and 11th, 2026. GKIDS Films will offer both the original Japanese version with English subtitles and an English-dubbed version. The story follows Shiori Maezawa, a high school student determined to become an online celebrity. After a humiliating video of her goes viral, she’s suddenly replaced by a look-alike who imprisons her inside her smartphone.
The film Labyrinth explores who we are, the problems with today’s internet, and how mindless online content can harm society. GKIDS has released a vibrant and fast-paced trailer showcasing Sanzigen’s unique animation style – a mix of classic anime and 3D computer graphics – set to the song “Sailor, Sail On” by the Japanese pop group Atarashii Gakko!. At 115 minutes long, Labyrinth is Sanzigen’s longest movie yet.
Labyrinth is Directed By One of the Greatest Sci-Fi Creators of All Time
Shōji Kawamori is a hugely influential figure in anime, especially when it comes to giant robot stories. He’s been key to the success of franchises like Transformers, shaping them into what they are today. Kawamori is best known for creating mecha series, but he’s unique because he blends pop music with futuristic, science fiction worlds – something fans of his Macross series especially appreciate. Though the Labyrinth trailer doesn’t show much mecha action, it’s already clear that music and science fiction are central to the film.
I’m so excited about Labyrinth! The story is a really cool sci-fi concept – it follows Shiori, who’s basically trapped inside the internet, trying to stop a twisted version of herself from… well, making everyone dumber with endless, mindless content. It’s a surprisingly sharp commentary on how we all use the internet today. And the music! Suzuka from Atarashii Gakko! not only voices Shiori, but the whole group performs this amazing track, “Sailor, Sail On,” specifically for the film. If you’re an anime fan, especially if you love mecha and awesome soundtracks – and trust me, Shoji Kawamori delivers on that front – you absolutely need to check this out!
Labyrinth premieres in American movie theaters on May 10 and May 11, 2026
