As a fan of horror games, I have to say that Jill Valentine is one of the most badass characters I’ve ever encountered. Her journey through the zombie-infested streets of Raccoon City in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is nothing short of harrowing, and her lines are some of the most memorable in gaming history.
Similar to Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker, who were part of the S.T.A.R.S., Jill Valentine also made a significant impact in the Resident Evil universe after investigating an enigmatic mansion teeming with reanimated corpses as part of Alpha Team. Four years later, she was the main character in her own game, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which got remade in 2020. Since then, she’s faced betrayal, pursuit, mind control, and near-death experiences, but throughout all the pain and hardship, Jill never let go of her sharp humor and clever dialogue.
Jill Valentine isn’t just about emotional turmoil and witty remarks. From time to time, she shares insightful thoughts or delves into profound soliloquies that provoke deep thinking. Given her versatile character throughout the Resident Evil series, it’s not surprising that she has delivered some of the franchise’s most memorable lines.
10 “Next Time, Take The F**king Hint.”
Jill Defeats Stage Three Nemesis
In the finale of Resident Evil 3, character Jill confronts Nemesis once more, this time in his ultimate form. Unlike the original 1999 game, Jill acquires a powerful rail gun which she uses to eliminate Nemesis permanently. Although some may argue that Capcom passed up an ideal moment to include the iconic “You want S.T.A.R.S?” line, there’s no question that her retort as she forces the barrel of the rail gun into Nemesis’ mouth is equally enjoyable.
By now, she’s had two encounters with this adversary and has endured Nemesis’ relentless pursuit throughout the game. It seems like she’s venting some accumulated anger.
9 “Don’t You Trust Your Partner?”
Jill Reassures Chris After Being Freed From Wesker’s Control
In Resident Evil 5, after Chris and Sheva defeat or wait for Wesker and Jill to depart (an ironic seven minutes pass for Wesker’s exit), a cutscene unfolds where Wesker receives a call and leaves Jill to battle Chris and Sheva on her own. Over time, Chris and Sheva can extract the P30 device from Jill’s chest, releasing her from Wesker’s influence. Upon liberation, she will express remorse to Sheva for her actions, admitting that she couldn’t resist, but she was conscious of her actions the entire time.
Jill urges Chris to pursue Wesker, sharing with him information about Wesker’s plan to release Uroboros amongst innocent people, causing a ruthous natural selection to occur and reduce population numbers. When Chris appears hesitant, Jill subtly appeals to his trust by asking if he believes in her, thereby reminding him of the strong loyalty they had after their encounter at Spencer’s Mansion, as depicted in the Lost in Nightmares DLC.
8 “The Storm Is Gone Now, But How Long Will It Last?”
Chris And Jill Reflect On The Aftermath Of The Terragrigia Panic
In the closing scenes of Resident Evil: Revelations, Jill and Chris step away from the Queen Zenobia’s wreckage. They reflect on the Terragrigia Panic and the changes in the BSAA. As their helicopter rises to secure their escape, Jill voices her thoughts about their situation, stating that though they successfully prevented a disaster by securing proof to reveal the FBC’s wrongdoings, the price they paid was far too steep.
Additionally, Jill points out that even though the storm has passed, the most severe conditions are still ahead, implying that the tranquility won’t endure. The sentiment is profound on its own, but when paired with an impactful soundtrack and a shot of Jill looking out the window, it creates a moment that’s indelible.
7 “I Can Blow Away Zombies And Monsters With The Best Of ‘Em; Show Me A Spider, And I Lose My Freaking Mind…”
Jill’s Reveals Her Aversion To Something Far Worse Than The Undead
In the novel adaptation titled “Resident Evil: The Umbrella Conspiracy“, Jill Valentine’s struggle with arachnophobia is unveiled. This novel takes place before the original “Resident Evil” game, following Jill Valentine as she readies herself for a S.T.A.R.S. unit meeting summoned by Albert Wesker. During this period, Jill confesses her intense fear of spiders, revealing that despite her ability to bravely face mindless zombies and grotesque beasts of various forms, spiders leave her trembling with fear.
The quote not only uncovers a vulnerable side of Jill’s character, but it also emphasizes to fans that despite their extraordinary roles as police officers, agents, or superhumans, these characters are deeply human, with emotions and fears similar to those of an ordinary individual.
6 “It’s True That Once The Wheels Of Justice Begin To Turn, Nothing Can Stop Them. Nothing.”
Jill Shares Her Belief In The Justice System
As a former S.T.A.R.S. member and RPD enforcer, I, Jill Valentine, have always valued doing what’s right and pursuing justice. Even when faced with the relentless pursuit of Nemesis, my faith in the justice system remains unshaken. Catherine Disher gave a remarkable portrayal of Jill Valentine in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, a performance that left a lasting impression on many gamers over the years. Not only did she deliver one of the most captivating performances for Jill, but she also had the honor and privilege of delivering some of the best quotes for my character in one of the finest games in the Resident Evil series.
Jill from Disher’s version in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is predominantly serious rather than comical, making her more profound and motivational quotes resonate even stronger. This aligns well with the game’s general tone, which is more realistic as compared to the remake, which still manages to incorporate humorous moments without compromising its overall seriousness.
5 “Ooooh, A Scary Locked Door.”
Jill Pokes Fun Of Umbrella’s Attempts To Slow Her Down
In the game called “Resident Evil: Resistance”, the action unfolds during the time when the Raccoon City outbreak, as depicted in Capcom’s remakes of “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil 3”, takes place. Characters from both these games make an appearance in “Resident Evil: Resistance”. Notably, Nicole Tompkins, who voiced Jill in “Resident Evil 3”, returns to provide some of the most naturally amusing one-liners as she embarks on a mission to defeat the Mastermind. Jill, voiced by Tompkins, brings plenty of laughs with her hilarious line delivery.
In various scenarios, Jill, the expert at opening locked doors, encounters a sealed one. However, it is Tompkins’ witty remark when delivering this specific line that breathes life into Jill’s character, a depth not previously achieved in earlier games.
4 “I’m A Trained Door Unlocker.”
Jill Boasts About Her Strengths
In another humorous instance similar to Nicole Tompkins’ lines from Resident Evil: Resistance, Jill, in her interaction with a locked door, appears more challenged by it than the bio-organic weapons (B.O.W.s). When Jill prepares to pick the lock, she humorously refers to herself as a “skilled door opener,” and if that’s not the most amusing way to describe someone proficient at lock-picking, I don’t know what is.
It’s even funnier because Tompkins says the line with such sincerity, making it seem like Jill truly believes she’s a renowned “door opener,” although it’s not a recognized profession. Perhaps someone should clarify that for her.
3 “B*tch Can’t Even Swim.”
Jill Mocks Nemesis After He Falls Into The River
In both the original version of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and its remake, character Jill has some of her most memorable lines, especially when speaking to Nemesis. It’s evident that Jill dislikes the monstrous being determined to wreak havoc on her, causing her to express her annoyance and dissatisfaction occasionally. After setting Nemesis on fire and watching him fall headfirst over a railing into the river, Jill chuckles and derides his inability to swim, assuming that Nemesis met his end by drowning.
In no time, she found herself eating humble pie when Stage 2 Nemesis emerged from the water, pursuing her all the way to the clocktower plaza, marking the location for the game’s significant second boss battle. Perhaps Jill had spoken prematurely, but her words became a popular internet meme during the game’s launch.
2 “September 28th, Daylight. The Monsters Have Overtaken The City. Somehow… I’m Still Alive.”
Jill’s Journal Entry And Internal Monologue
The game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis unfolds on September 28th, when Umbrella Corporation releases Nemesis in the deserted city of Raccoon, aiming to eliminate any surviving members of the S.T.A.R.S. unit who possess knowledge about Umbrella’s role in the city’s devastation. Just before she decides to leave Raccoon City for her final escape, Jill introduces the game’s setting and mood by describing how the city is overrun with zombies, expressing surprise at still being alive amid the mayhem.
In the opening scene, it’s effective to have voiceover to present Jill as the central character. However, this narration not only introduces Jill but also sets the stage for “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.” Through Jill’s words, players experience a sense of impending doom, as if she’s lucky just to be alive, yet something – Nemesis – is poised to challenge her determination to survive.
1 “You Want S.T.A.R.S.? I’ll Give You S.T.A.R.S.!”
Jill’s Famous Line To Nemesis
As a gamer, one of my favorite lines I associate with the character Jill Valentine comes from both Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and its 2020 remake. In the original game, I recall Jill saying this quote after delivering the fatal blow to Nemesis, a subtle jab at her relentless pursuit, almost like a “take that” or a big middle finger. In the remake, she utters the same line as she parts ways with Carlos, using herself as bait to distract Nemesis from the subway train and its passengers. It’s a selfless move, but it shows her determination to protect those around her.
In “Resident Evil 3”, there is a possibility that the scene gets interrupted when Nemesis hits Jill, but both Disher and Tompkins have perfectly captured the quote, which has consistently been one of Jill’s iconic lines.
