One of the Highest-Rated Games of the Year is Coming to PS5

The quirky, cat-themed strategy game Mewgenics, made by the team behind The Binding of Isaac and The End is Nigh, might soon be available on PlayStation 5. Currently, you can only play Mewgenics on PC, but a recent conversation between the game’s creator, Edmund McMillen, and Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez suggests it could also come to Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 in the future.

After more than ten years of development, Mewgenics launched on PC on February 10, 2026, and quickly became a hit. Critics have praised the game, currently ranking it fourth on OpenCritic’s list of the best games of 2026, with an average score of 89 and a 94% recommendation rate. Players agree, giving Mewgenics a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam based on over 41,000 reviews. The game has also been a commercial success, selling over a million copies in its first week. Given this success, it’s no surprise that developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel are eager to reach an even wider audience.

Mewgenics Is Coming to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2

On March 25th, Edmund McMillen, one of the creators of Mewgenics and a former designer at Team Meat, shared a 14-second video on X (formerly Twitter) with the message, “Oh hi Switch 2!” The video showed Mewgenics running on a Nintendo Switch 2, though it was an early, unfinished version of the game, as indicated by developer text on the screen. In response, Tyrone Rodriguez posted their own 20-second video with the caption “Oh yeah?” This video appeared to show the same unfinished build of Mewgenics running on a PlayStation 5.

Okay, so the creators haven’t said it directly, but those recent videos definitely seem like they’re hinting that Mewgenics is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5! We don’t know when we can expect it on those consoles, though. And as of right now, there’s no word on whether an Xbox Series X/S version is even planned.

Is Nicalis Working on Mewgenics’ PS5 Port?

Tyrone Rodriguez and game designer Edmund McMillen have a long-standing working relationship. Back in 2007, Rodriguez founded Nicalis, a company that specializes in bringing indie games to new platforms. Nicalis famously created a remake of McMillen’s popular game, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, in 2014, and continued to support it with several expansions through 2021. They also collaborated on bringing McMillen’s deck-building game, The Legend of Bum-bo, to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S after its initial release in 2019.

In September 2019, journalist Jason Schreier (at Kotaku at the time) published a report based on interviews with former Nicalis employees and outside developers. These developers said that Nicalis president Tyrone Rodriguez would abruptly stop responding to their emails after agreeing to publish their games. The former Nicalis employees described Rodriguez’s behavior as controlling and exploitative. Recently, a post on Rodriguez’s X account hinted at a possible collaboration with Edmund McMillen to bring the game Mewgenics to the PlayStation 5, but Nicalis’ involvement hasn’t been officially announced.
