A common belief among Dragon Ball fans is that Vegeta always struggles to keep up with Goku and is constantly overshadowed by him. However, that’s not accurate. Throughout Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta has repeatedly not only reached Goku’s level, but has even surpassed him at times.
During the original Dragon Ball Z series, Goku became significantly more powerful than Vegeta, leaving the Saiyan Prince behind. However, that gap has closed considerably with Dragon Ball Super. Some fans now believe Vegeta is even stronger than Goku, especially after he unlocked his Ultra Ego transformation and their fight in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Vegeta Had a Higher Power Level Than Goku in the Saiyan Sage
Despite often being seen as a defeat for him, Vegeta actually won his fight against Goku in the Saiyan Saga. Goku briefly had more power using Kaioken times four, but this doesn’t consider Vegeta’s ability to transform into a Great Ape, which significantly increased his strength. Even without that transformation, Vegeta’s natural power level was much higher than Goku’s, and Goku had to push Kaioken to its breaking point just to stay competitive.
Goku was nearly exhausted after his clash with Vegeta. Had Vegeta not panicked and transformed into a Great Ape by creating an artificial moon, he would have had plenty of energy to defeat Goku before Gohan and Krillin could return and intervene.
Super Saiyan Vegeta Surpassed Super Saiyan Goku All By Himself
Vegeta’s victory over Android 19 is a major highlight of Dragon Ball Z. Through intense solo training in space, he surpasses Goku in strength, becoming the most powerful Z-Fighter when the Androids first appear. While Goku’s illness might have been a factor, the evidence suggests Vegeta closed the power gap between them through his own efforts.
Throughout most of the Cell Saga, Vegeta is actually more powerful than Goku. Goku only becomes stronger when he achieves Full Power Super Saiyan during training with Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Despite falling behind Goku, Vegeta is unique in the Cell Games – alongside only one other fighter, he avoids being completely defeated by the Cell Juniors.
Majin Vegeta Beat Super Saiyan 2 Goku & Sacrificed His Life to Stop Majin Buu
Although Vegeta wins his fight against Super Saiyan 2 Goku in the Majin Buu Saga by surprising him, it’s not a particularly remarkable victory. He needed Babidi’s power to even reach that level of strength. Still, being able to battle Goku on equal footing after Goku spent seven years training is a significant accomplishment.
Honestly, what really got me about Vegeta’s fight with Majin Buu was how he stepped up and took complete ownership of bringing Buu back. He literally risked everything to try and fix it! And even though his Final Explosion didn’t quite finish Buu off, it was way more effective than Gohan’s attempt, I mean, he actually pushed Buu to the brink! It’s crazy to think he would have killed Buu if it was anyone else – he just needed a villain that wasn’t completely indestructible.
Vegeta Made Beerus Bleed
During the events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Vegeta as a Super Saiyan 2 actually becomes more powerful than Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 form. Master Roshi specifically points this out. When Beerus slaps Bulma, Vegeta’s incredible power is unleashed, fueled by his intense anger.
I was really surprised watching Vegeta transform into Super Saiyan 2. His power increase was incredible – he actually managed to hurt Beerus, even make him bleed! It’s amazing when you remember that Goku, even as a Super Saiyan 3, couldn’t even touch Beerus and was defeated almost instantly. Vegeta’s rage clearly gave him a huge advantage.
Vegeta Unlocked God Ki All On His Own
After the events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Vegeta is determined to gain God Ki like Goku, but he’s too proud to go through the same training ritual. Instead, he asks Whis to train him personally. Over the next six months, Vegeta trains in isolation on Beerus’ planet, completing various tasks and gradually absorbing the God Ki that surrounds him.
When Goku starts training with Whis, Vegeta has already reached the same power level as him. By the time of the Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F movie, both Goku and Vegeta are equally powerful and have achieved the Super Saiyan Blue transformation. While Goku required a special ceremony to become a god, Vegeta was able to unlock this power through his own training.
Vegeta’s Version of Super Saiyan Blue is Better Than Goku’s
Ultimately, Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue is more powerful and refined than Goku’s. During the Tournament of Power, Vegeta achieved Super Saiyan Blue Evolved, a unique transformation he’s maintained as of the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Despite mastering Ultra Ego, Vegeta still prefers to use Super Saiyan Blue Evolved when practicing with Gohan Beast, as shown in chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super. Notably, Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Vegeta is the first and only mortal to ever defeat a God of Destruction, having won against Toppo in his Destroyer Form during the Tournament of Power.
Vegeta Learned Instant Transmission Faster Than Goku
It’s amazing that Vegeta could use Instant Transmission, a move known as Goku’s signature technique, even though he likely doesn’t remember how now because he never fully perfected it. While it took Goku a whole year to learn, Vegeta picked up the fundamentals in just a few weeks of training on Yardrat during the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga.
Vegeta dislikes using a technique he sees as Goku’s signature move and never bothered to truly learn it. He was focused on mastering Forced Spirit Fission during his time on Yardrat. However, looking at what they both accomplished on Yardrat, it’s obvious Vegeta has far superior control over his Ki compared to Goku.
Vegeta Beats Goku at the End of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Vegeta finally wins a fair fight against Goku. Throughout the movie, they battle using only their base forms, and in the climax, Vegeta expertly evades Goku’s final attack, lands a hit, and knocks him down before ultimately falling himself.
Although the difference isn’t huge, Vegeta has definitively become stronger than Goku through his own efforts. Throughout the series, Vegeta has always strived to overcome his feelings of inadequacy and find his own way to gain power, and he’s finally achieved that – becoming the stronger fighter, at least for the moment. It remains to be seen if Goku will eventually catch up, but as of Chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta currently has the edge.
