The recent success of Pokemon Pokopia has significantly increased the value of Ditto collectibles. Prices for official trading cards featuring Ditto have been rising steadily. The unique portrayal of Ditto in Pokemon Pokopia, with its own story and personality, is resonating with fans and unexpectedly boosting the popularity – and price – of all Ditto merchandise.
Ever since Pokemon Pokopia was announced, fans believed it would be a success. The idea of playing as a human-like Ditto and building a home for Pokemon on a deserted island really appealed to people. Those predictions proved correct quickly: Nintendo reported that Pokemon Pokopia sold over 2.2 million copies in its first four days, making it one of the best-selling games on the Switch 2 so far.
Pokemon TCG Ditto Cards Are More Expensive Due to Pokopia’s Popularity
The recent surge in popularity of the Pokémon Ditto isn’t just benefiting the new Pokémon Pokopia life simulation game. Prices for Ditto cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game have been steadily increasing for weeks, and jumped even higher after the game’s release. There are 31 different Ditto cards and 57 variations across 19 official card sets. Data from TCGPlayer shows many of these cards have significantly increased in value – some are now worth more than twice what they were in mid-January.
Several Pokémon cards have recently seen significant price increases. For example, a reverse holofoil card from the 2012 Boundaries Crossed expansion jumped from around $6 to $14.72 between January 11th and 13th. Similarly, a 2010 Triumphant version of Ditto increased from $4.26 to $8.84 during that same period, with the biggest price surge happening around the time the game Pokopia was released.
Although regular Ditto cards are increasing in price, the most valuable Ditto cards are actually special promotional versions. Currently, the most expensive is a Ditto (Squirtle) card released only at the 2007 Games Expo. It’s worth around $350, but recently sold for $525 on TCGPlayer. This card, which has the event logo on it, is a unique version of a card from the EX Delta Species series. That series features Ditto disguised as various first-generation Pokémon, like Pikachu, Geodude, and Mr. Mime, as well as the original Kanto starters from Pokémon Red and Blue. ThePriceDex estimates these cards are worth between $20 and $245, with the Squirtle version being the most valuable.
Pokémon Pokopia is not only a great addition to the Pokémon franchise, but it’s also been a huge success on its own. Before it even launched, critics gave it the highest score of any Pokémon game ever, with a rating of 89 – just slightly higher than the 88 given to Pokémon Y. Since its release, players have loved it too, giving it a perfect score of 100 on OpenCritic.
