Here’s Who Is Likely to Replace Gensler

As a seasoned crypto investor with years of experience navigating the volatile and ever-evolving cryptocurrency market, I find myself closely following the latest developments within the regulatory landscape. The potential departure of SEC Commissioner Gary Gensler, who has been both a friend and foe to the crypto industry, has stirred a wave of speculation about his successor.

As per a recent report by Reuters, Commissioner Hester Peirce has shown no inclination towards leading the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

As a analyst, I find myself expressing excitement at the prospect of Peirce, affectionately known as “Crypto Mom,” potentially succeeding SEC Chair Gary Gensler in his position.

Currently, it appears that Dan Gallagher, currently serving as Chief Legal Officer at Robinhood, is strongly considered for the top position at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Gallagher spent nearly four years from November 2011 until October 2015 as an SEC commissioner. Upon leaving the agency, he took on the role of Chief Legal Officer at the international pharmaceutical company, Mylan.

In May 2020, Robinhood ended up hiring Gallagher as its top lawyer.

Former SEC Commissioner Paul Atkins is also among the potential contenders for replacing Gensler.

Through his crypto-friendly approach, Gallagher has managed to attract numerous bakers in the cryptocurrency sector.

Gensler, who taught a blockchain course at MIT, was also initially seen as a crypto-friendly pick. However, his agency ended up bringing lawsuits against multiple cryptocurrency companies, including cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

Because he strongly opposes cryptocurrencies, Gensler has been seen as a major adversary by those in the emerging industry, who claim he’s stifling innovation. However, the head of the SEC has consistently emphasized that crypto companies should adhere to existing securities laws and give consumers clear disclosures.

Gensler is expected to step down before Jan. 20.
