As a seasoned veteran of World of Warcraft, I can attest to the nostalgia that Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker evokes in me. Back in the day, acquiring this legendary was an epic journey that required patience, skill, and a little bit of luck. It was not uncommon for players like myself to spend countless hours farming Molten Core, hoping to get our hands on the elusive Bindings of the Windseeker.
In the initial stages of World of Warcraft, the standard of equipment held greater importance due to its scarcity and the effort required to obtain it. Epic quality items were so challenging and time-consuming to acquire that many players did not possess a full set even months after reaching Level 60. Even fewer were able to secure one of the rare legendaries available, such as Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker.
Beyond being the frequent subject of memes and trolling in the trade chat of World of Warcraft, Thunderfury is well-known as the first legendary item introduced in the game. Despite numerous changes that World of Warcraft has undergone since its launch, Thunderfury remains accessible even today. Although it’s no longer useful for endgame content, it’s an excellent weapon to acquire for transmogrification (transmog). Here’s how you can secure this weapon for yourself.
How to Get Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker in World of Warcraft
In some instances, legendary items can be found through random drops, while others necessitate the completion of a quest. For Thunderfury, however, acquiring the quest itself depends on two random loots from Molten Core, an ancient 40-player raid from the early days of World of Warcraft. To access Molten Core, head to Blackrock Mountain, located between Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes. Inside this mountainous structure suspended over a lake of lava, you’ll find a large building. Descend to the bottom, then speak with Lothos Riftwalker to enter Molten Core.
At level 50 and above, the Molten Core can effortlessly be tackled alone since you’ll be defeating most enemies with a single strike. Don’t forget to deactivate Chromie Time before attempting this if your character is currently utilizing it, as using this feature prevents entry into old raids.
In the depths of Molten Core, two formidable bosses may randomly drop pieces essential for your quest towards acquiring Thunderfury. One is named Garr and he often drops the right half of the Bindings of the Windseeker, a legendary item of high quality. The other boss, Baron Geddon, usually yields the left half of the same artifact. Even though you can initiate the quest for Thunderfury with just one piece, eventually, you’ll need both halves to complete it.
Both bindings have a very low drop rate, so it may take time to get Thunderfury.
Once you successfully secure one (or ideally, both) portals, make your way to Silithus. Upon entering from Un’Goro Crater, you’ll encounter an NPC named Zidormi near the entrance. To interact with a necessary NPC that isn’t present in the post-Sargeras attack version of Silithus, you’ll need to speak with Zidormi and travel back in time before Sargeras pierced his sword into Azeroth.
Afterward, make your way towards the northwest area in Silithus, specifically the Crystal Vale. At a site that appears to have been once a bustling camp but is now ruined, you will encounter an NPC named Highlord Demetrian. If you possess at least one of the bindings, you’ll be able to interact with him and receive an item that initiates a quest. Inspect the Vessel of Rebirth and then return to speak with Highlord Demetrian again to obtain the subsequent quest, titled Thunderann the Windseeker.
For this quest, you will need to obtain the following:
- Both Bindings of the Windseeker
- Essence of the Firelord (Drops from the final boss of Molten Core, Ragnaros)
- 10 Enchanted Elementium Bars
A Miner can craft Charming Elementium Bars when they’ve learned the recipe from Master Elemental Shaper Krixix in Blackwing Lair. To create a Charming Elementium Bar, you will need 1 Elementium Ingot, 10 Arcanite Bars, 1 Fiery Core, and 3 Elemental Flux.
1) In Blackwing Lair, you’ll find Elementium Ingots; Fiery Cores drop from enemies within Molten Core; Elemental Flux is available for purchase at Blacksmith Supply merchants. Arcanite can be obtained through two methods: either by buying it on the Auction House or by crafting it as an Alchemist, using one Thorium Bar and one Arcane Crystal per bar.
To cut down on time, another option is to buy the Enchanted Elementium Bars directly from the Auction House. The cost may fluctuate, but you should budget around 1,300 to 2,500 gold for each bar.
After gathering everything, return to Silithus and converse with Highlord Demetrian once more to finish the quest. Remember though, as soon as you submit the quest, he’ll call forth Thunderann. If you can handle both Molten Core and Blackwing Lair on your own, Thunderann should pose no problem for you. Defeat him, then engage with the blade to receive the quest Rise, Thunderfury!. From there, all that remains is speaking to Highlord Demetrian one final time, and Thuderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker will be yours.
