Great news for Borderlands 4 players! On March 26th, Gearbox is launching a significant update that includes bug fixes, improvements, and the first story expansion, ‘Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.’ For weeks, Gearbox has been sharing details about this new DLC and introducing C4SH, a new playable character. Now, the wait is over, and players can finally experience the adventure!
Following a slow finish to 2025, Borderlands 4 is generating excitement again thanks to a steady stream of new content. Players received a dedicated Photo Mode in January, and the long-awaited Pearlescent rarity tier, which adds a new challenge for loot hunters. February 2026 brought Bounty Pack 2, titled ‘Legend of the Stone Demon,’ offering fresh quests, enemies, and rewards. But many fans are most excited about March 26th, when the first Story Pack – similar to expansions in past Borderlands games – finally launches.
The new downloadable content for Borderlands 4, called Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, focuses on story and takes players to a new area on Kairos called The Whispering Glacier. This zone will include fresh activities, unpredictable events, and collectibles to find. Many fans are especially excited to experience a new story featuring both familiar and new characters, including Ellie, Crazy Earl, Mancubus Bloodtooth, and Pickle. Gearbox has hinted at even more characters appearing, too. It’s important to know that this DLC is premium content, meaning it needs to be purchased separately or is included in the Super Deluxe Edition.
How to Start Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned
After you buy the new content, you’ll first need to finish the “A Lot To Process” mission in the main Borderlands 4 story. Then, go to the Fadefields and find Zadra’s Lab to start a new quest. Gearbox suggests being level 13 or higher, though it’s not strictly necessary.
Borderlands 4 introduces a new playable character named C4SH. Gearbox has been showcasing C4SH, who used to be a CasinoBot but is now a rogue agent with unique abilities based around gambling and mysterious powers. Unlike the other characters, C4SH doesn’t have ultimate abilities, and players can equip up to four enhancements across all of his skill trees.

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about the new update! Gearbox isn’t just asking us to spend more money, they’re giving us a ton of free stuff too. The March 26th update finally lets us level up our characters to 60 – a whole 10 levels higher than before! But the best part? They’ve finally added shared progression! That means anything I’ve collected or unlocked – collectibles, activities, map progress, even vehicle skins – will now be available on all my characters. And it all happens automatically once the update is installed, which is amazing!
The March 26 update for Borderlands 4 includes a number of bug fixes and improvements. All original Vault Hunters have received adjustments to their skills, and some gear has been tweaked. Gearbox has also added new features and settings, such as the option to turn off pop-up notifications for Vault Cards and challenges.

It’s the closest he’s ever felt to being alive, and now he embraces risk, always backing himself and playing to win, no matter how dangerous the gamble.
C4SH is one of two new playable characters coming to Borderlands 4 as part of paid Story Packs, and you can use him throughout the entire game. Explore the world of Kairos with C4SH, utilizing his special abilities, and enjoy his quirky commentary as he obsesses over anything based on luck!

All Borderlands 4 players will receive these updates at no cost, even if they don’t have the first story pack.
- The Level Cap has been increased 10 levels, to a max level of 60
- This long-awaited increase has finally arrived. We’re looking forward to seeing how you take advantage of these additional levels across characters.
- Shared Character Progression
- Collectibles, Activities, Big Map Progress, SDU tokens, Vault Powers, Vehicle skins and Hover Drives are all part of the Shared Character Progression available in this update.
- No action is needed for this, and it automatically applies to all of your characters! If you’ve found different collectibles on different characters, those will all combine.
- In Multiplayer, players will only have the map discovered for the areas they themselves have explored.
- Deleting all character saves does not reset progress. After deleting all previous characters, a new character will still have all previous map progress.
- Note that revealed Fast Travel locations still need campaign progress to take advantage of them.
